  3. I totally regret selling my SEW a few months ago, at my age 70 plus I felt that I needed some comfort. I bought a Z3 which is a nice car to drive but it is what its meant to be, a roadster. I miss the sheer driveability of the Westfield and the light weight which enables you to throw it around. I also miss annoying the Audi at roundabouts who drive very close behind and I can blow them away on the exit. I was seriously looking at a Striker with a bike engine on eBay but can I justify three cars?

  4. I'm 31, and my younger brother is 28. We've loved the last two years building the Westfield with Dad, and now love driving about in in. I didn't exactly need an excuse to visit the parents, but its a great reason to head over every few weeks!

  5. I’ve fitted the ones shown that have a HALO led sidelight dipped and main beam, they are in 5 3/4 bowls and use the standard 3 pin headlight plus with a separate sideliight feed. Sealed LED units Ebay from China in less than 2 weeks and work a treat

  9. No intention to break anything BUT... my Son is driving the track prepared MX-5 up so we should be covered for all eventualities and weather! The Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on the MX-5 are a bit better than Nankang AR-1's in the wet, especially at Rockingham

  10. So whilst sat having a beer back at the campsite, I took a punt on an "EBay cheapie" exhaust system. I had been keeping my eye on them for a few weeks anyway. It arrived today, and although the box was pretty battered, I was delighted to see it was a Direnza System, making it even more of a bargain I had already stripped the existing system a couple of days ago, so it didn't take me long to fit it tonight It has a resonator just behind the cat at the front of the system, so hopefully it will still be quiet enough to stay under noise levels on track The negative is it has added 3.7kg to the car. Hopefully it will be a bit more free flowing though and therefore release a couple more ponies to offset the weight gain! Total weight saving now is 72.85kg

  11. A decent bench pillar drill will make your wonder how you ever managed without one. Got mine from SIPS https://www.sipuk.co.uk/sip-01701-b16-12-bench-pillar-drill.html They're basically ALL exactly the same, made in China with sightly different specs and painted different colours for different retailers (Draper, Clark, etc etc), BUT this was the best price for the spec (16mm chuck and a depth stop) and the best looking (IMO). I've had it a year and not a week goes by without me using it.

  13. You can indeed swap. A lot of folks have two scuttles, one full and one aero and simply swap as required. Westfield cages fit round the windscreen. Mine is a wide MT75 short shift caged car, you must pop round and have a play...

  14. It should be possible to tell the age of the chassis from the chassis number, but I can't remember the formula. Someone will be along soon with the answer, I suspect, or you could ask the factory to confirm the chassis age, from the number.

In the same way that a cooker's fuse rating is based on a diversity calculation - i.e. on an assumption that it's unlikely that all elements will ever be turned on at exactly the same time, this is also the basis on which the local supply will be designed. How this works out depends if the houses were originally built with gas, electric or oil heating and other factors, but often the supply is designed on the assumption of only 1 - 2 kW of load for each property. Average that over the few hundred houses that will be fed (in an estate scenario at any rate) from a given substation and that will be how they size the transformer. The transformer will probably get overloaded for short periods of time, e.g during TV commercial breaks when everyone boils their kettle, but they have huge thermal inertia, so are designed to cope with this. The fuse rating given to each property also drops out of this calculation, and also whether they could upgrade it without a major headache. It will be interesting to see how things develop if electric cars take off extensively, and houses start getting charging points that draw heavy currents for hours on end. It's probably well worth upgrading the CU given your plans. Modern breakers (I'm guessing yours might even be wire or cartridge fuses?) are much quicker acting in the event of a fault and RCD protection is the norm these days, which significantly reduces the risk of a fatal shock. I still think you'll be fine on a 60A main fuse, though.

Electronic bikes are growing hugely in popularity which has prompted inevitable discussion of their safety and speed limits. But Scott Snaith from e-bike seller 50Cycles.com says the current speed restrictions are a hindrance to rider safety. Mr Snaith said: “If we’re being sensible, we actually need to relax the laws around e-bikes, not make them more stringent. Mr Snaith says that the speed limit should be increased to 20mph, and the power upped from 250 watts to 350, or even 500 watts. He said: “If you’re negotiating busy roundabouts or junctions – and particularly if you’re slightly wary – an extra boost of power might just accelerate you out of harm’s way.”

  18. This is already the case though, for e-mopeds and e-motorbikes. E-bikes are fundamentally different in that they are electrically assisted pedal cycles of limited power and speed. Sales are increasing exponentially globally- there would be no need to add extra beaurocracy to a mildly assisted pedal cycle. Yes, you can build one that's as powerful as a small motorbike, but then it's a motorbike. If you build one that attempts to comply with the law and ride it responsibly then I can't personally see any problem.

  19. In Spain, any caravan/trailer that has a mma over 750kg, needs an MOT, a Registation number displayed along the towing car one, be registered in the "trafic athority" and has its own insurance. From my understanding, that is how it works in most of Europe... and from what I know, if you tow your trailer/caravan in spain without the above, you can be charged with an AMAZING fine... so... be carefull when going to camp to spain!!

  20. Both bikes have Bafang/8-Fun motors, but mine is a larger (more torque handling), heavier BPM motor than the rear hub CST motor on my wife's bike. I also have a 20A controller against her 15A, although performance is similar with her much lighter weight... Both motors are wound for a no-load speed of about 21mph (code13 I think)- under load they run about 18-19mph where allowed. The front hub is surprisingly nice to ride as it keeps the steering very stable and relaxing (even on gravel), but obviously it's rubbish for popping up kerbs. My kits came from whooshbikes, but I think they might only be selling crank kits now- take a look at bmsbattery.com for direct from China prices. If you buy the parts individually from China, you can also avoid the awful kit brake levers and LCD displays...

  23. It’s still fun even with the Westfield here too now! Nightshift tonight got back off holiday yesterday evening, all I want to do is play with the Westy, got new upper balljoint to fit, new coolant temp sensor (probably not needed but matter of preventative perhaps) want to replace 2 missing studs on the boot where previous owner “misplaced” them forcefully I’d say lol oops. And trying to decide wether to fit my vinyl bonnet number plate in place of the standard plastic one. Better make sure I line it up well!

  28. It’ll do about 30mph, 80cc and I sorted a longer more motorcycle looking exhaust later (see original short one in this picture below). So it sounds more like a bsa bantam than a strimmer now lol! On the bike trainer to set up the carb and chain tensioner however not used on public roads as it’s not mot’d, registered, insured, taxed, etc- BORING

  32. With new parts (they are all Chinese from just a few manufacturers) you'd be around £400 - £600 depending on what you choose and what else gets upgraded along the way... Oh, and unless your budget is large (well over £1000), in my view you'll always get a better finished result by converting a nice base bike, rather than buying a new complete ebike. Plus you then have the option to ride above 15mph with assistance off road...

Tel’s tales – Harewood weekend 15thand 16thSept 2018 This weekend saw the speed series visiting god’;s own county of Yorkshire and sample the local weather which once again was windy and at times wet as well as a little chilly. It’s the only hillclimb Steve and I do as its only 30 mins away and on the doorstep. For those that have not driven it Harewood is the longest hillclimb in the country and notoriously difficult to get a good time as there are several places to get the corner wrong as well as the challenging fast right hand finish at Quarry bend. On Saturday the 8 Westfiled competitors got ready to rumble only to feel spots of rain start at 0830hrs. and that meant P1 and P2 were wet but luckily the track started to dry as the day went on. In P1 Andy Hargreaves stalled on the start line but in fairness he has not been out much this year! I think he also forgot to fix his timing strut on. I think I was fastest but Adam Phelps was to rule the weekend putting in some great times on both days in the Busa which he was double driving with Charlotte with dad John as pit monkey. John Hoyle and Stephen Herbert turned up to watch and on Sunday we had Dave Cleaver, Paul Aspden and several Yorkshire members arrived in their Westfields after a breakfast meeting at the Rede Kite cafe. T1 looked like the track was drying out but several cars were going off and with a new black tarmac finish it was hard to detect damp/wet patches. Charlotte had spun in P1 and went off roading in T1. I was not going to be outdone and I was a bit too aggressive coming out of Farmhouse and I could not stay on the black stuff so I ended up in the kitty litter. Back in the paddock I had lots of help to remove the massive quantity of gravel from the rear diffuser tray. Steve bagged it up ( and took it home)and we reckoned that it would have cost £3 at B&Q. His wife Margaret suggest that to get over it I should “get stoned” when I got home…… T2 runs were dry and we were all getting quicker. Interestinmgly all our best runs were in T3which finished at 1730 hrs so well before the 1800 curfew. Top 3 were Adam Phelps 57.65, Mick Dent 59.53 and me on 60.64 secs. Sunday was a wet start again but with a promise of better cloudy weather later in the day and that’s exactly what we got despite a few light showers which did not affect the track much as the strong wind dried it quickly. The main fun of the morning was watching and helping ( hindering ) Mick Dent and his daughter to erect a large tent which was big enough to fit his car inside. I think Adam was pushing hard in P2 and had an off but we all put in some good times in the 4 timed runs we had. Charlotte was very keen to see more of the Yorkshire countryside and went of the track at Quarry bend in her last run and took out the timing gear. Chris Winstanley (timing team) presented her with the smashed tripod as a “trophy”. Mark bishop improved a lot on his Sat time and Ian Davenport also improved. Andy Hargreaves was well pleased with his times on his year old slicks. Times were as follows: Adam Phelps 57.51 Class H Mick Dent 59.39 Class H Terry Everall 59.85 Class G Andy Hargreaves 60.28 Class G Charlotte Phelps 60.98 Class H Ian Davenport 64.09 Class C Stephen Everall 67.90 Class D Mark Bishop 67.52 Class A A good turnout and a competitive weekend Terry Everall
