Out yesterday in town when I saw an elderly lady with a hearing assist dog being very closely followed by a gypsy (a term I don’t use loosely) woman. I didn’t like the look of the gypsy’s attention so I turned and got in behind them. The gypsy woman threw some dust over the top of the elderly woman, making her stop. At that point, the gypsy pulled a device out of her bag and held it against the elderly woman’s handbag - obviously a crude RFID reader trying to steal her card info. In what was probably with hindsight the wrong thing to do, I jumped forward and grabbed the RFID reader out of her hand. Both women understandably cried out, for different reasons. The gypsy then tried to assault me to get it back, but even at my advanced age, I fended her off and started shouting for the police, which made her scurry off like a rat. After I explained what had happened to the elderly woman and encouraged her to buy a RFID blocking purse, I went to the police station, made a statement and gave them the device. No idea how much info the thieving c*** had in it. Last night I ordered a new RFID blocking wallet. I suggest you do the same if you already haven’t done so. You can’t trust banks to refund your money these days.3 points

I must pride myself today on finding NO COW POO, let's hope it lasts hey! We met at Matlock where the blinking toilets were shut, so it was a quick scoot to the shopping outlet. In future we will meet at Sainsbury's where there is petrol and a pee. Andy and Sue, Martyn and Sue with Paul and Pat in the VX. At Matlock Paul let me have a little drive around the car park in his VX, for which I feel very honoured, it is harder than a Westfield to get in and out of and you see nothing out of the rear view mirror, it felt a positive drive, it was lovely . It certainly looks the biz too. We sliced a route through the centre of the Peak District, meeting the Spire Classic Car Run coming in the opposite direction, so lots of waving there then. Up the very fine Winnats Pass, just look at that empty tarmac begging for my 4 new tyres, of which I am exceptionally pleased with, exceptionally. Then it was a slow run down Mam Nick to take in the scenery Arriving at the Rambler Inn at 11.55am, just before it opened, meaning an empty car park and pub, simples. A table for 8 soon became a table for 10 when Chris and Mo arrived. The feasting began The view of the Great Mam Tor Ridge from the car park. Bonnets Off - the view of the great 2 litre Zetec in Andy's car, complete with a gold rocker cover. We could have another caption competition with this photo! Paul went next with his turbo 2 l which he has just changed the cam belt and water pump on, it's service day tomorrow, he keeps a nice car there. Andy and Sue ready for the off We set off for more of those views over Mam Nick, those hills, those twisty roads, all lacking cow poo. We were now a 5 car convoy, with Chris and Mo. We arrived at the cake stop and parked in our designated area To the grand finale, the cake, but someone couldn't wait, so we had an empty plate on the table didn't we Paul? All the ingredients for a great day out - driving, bonnets off, eating, scenery and great company, thank you to everyone for making it happen. It's Shelsley Walsh next weekend so we hope to see you all back in the Peak District the weekend after.2 points

Had a good turn out for breakfast this morning with 2 new cars coming, a Robin Hood that lives locally to me and my mate Gary in his Cobra. After breakfast we had a ride over to the trolleybus museum at Sandtoft where we met with Ron, who was just leaving, and Geoffrey and Dave coming in their tin-tp. It's a great little museum seeing buses that were built where I served my apprenticeship, a long way before my time though. There was 1 bus built in my time. At least I enjoyed myself, but it was a bit like being at work. We even had cake.2 points

Initially this is to gauge the level of interest, as it takes a fair bit of preparation/organisation for such an event and quite frankly not worth putting on for 5-6 cars. Ideally, at least 15-20 cars would make it worthwhile, and if successful, encouraging to run it again next year. It would take 3-4 weekends of my own time, and about 6-800 miles to map and test the route, so I need to feel confident that would be well-subscribed. Similar to the old-school night (road) rallies, regularity rallies and historic rallies, it would be run with 'tulip navigation' but in a non-competitive way with questions asked along the route to make it a bit more fun and ensure the full route has been covered. The route will cover the Borders/Lanarkshire/Dumfries area - ideal for both Clan McWesty and the north of England (provided you have a valid passport! - and keep your eyes off our cattle). It's easier done two-up (driver and navigator) and have chosen a Saturday for the run so that you can shout your navigator (wife/girlfriend/mistress...) a nice night in a hotel and make the most of the bank holiday weekend. There's nothing stopping anyone doing it solo though - just need to multi-task. At this initial stage, I plan the finish to be near Peebles, where there is a range of hotels/accommodation, and we can crash one of the pubs on the Saturday night.. The start would be around mid-late morning and covering around 150-200 miles, with a lunch/fuel stop midway. Cars depart the start, one or two minutes apart, start positions pulled from a hat. The route can on occasion cross over itself, so it's not unusual to see cars coming the other way, making you second-guess your navigation. In the spirit of the event, and it's old-school nature, GPS etc is discouraged - just the route book and your speedo/tripmeter is all you need. Included is a sealed envelope with the destination if you get horribly lost. I thought such an event might add something a bit different to the usual Sunday run-out and Stoneleigh-once-a-year calendar. Back home in New Zealand in the '90's, there was an event run in the same format for motorcyclists that I entered called the Egmont 300 (300kms) which attracted well over 100 road bikes each year. It ran for five years, of which I attended four of - I missed the last one as I was in plaster with a broken foot from a crash, absolutely gutted as I would have been one of just a dozen to have done all five. After the first event, myself and many others made DIY map scrollers like on the Dakar bikes. We'd be given our route books about 1-1/2 hour before the start, and then madly cut up and tape the instructions into a long scroll before the start. Those green to the event (or couldn't be arsed) just duct-taped the pages (in the supplied poly-pocket) to their fuel tank. The finish was always at the start - a horse racecourse, where there was plenty of room for camping and a hall for a party/prize-giving. When that event stopped running (I think the routes were starting to repeat itself), my best mate and I ran the same format but smaller event in our own county for three years, which up to 40 bikes attended each time, called the Most Excellent Adventure. It covered around 200kms, and always finished in a different remote spot somewhere, where we all pitched our tents and wild-camped around a fire, got sozzled and told lies! If you cannot resist the temptation to have a go up the hill your self we will be able to fit you in for some runs on the day! Crash Helmets can be hired on the day as required! Day 7 - Sat 9th June Up with the lark, on our way west by 7.30. Dry, but cloudy, bit chilly, glad of the heater. Nice roads through Tenterden, Haywards Heath, and on to Petworth where we stopped for Breakfast in Tiffins Tea Room. Nice welcoming place, friendly service, good food and coffee. Highly recommend it if your thirsty or hungry in Petworth. Refreshed, we carried on west through Petersfield, Winchester and Salisbury, then headed towards the A303. Stopped for a quick snack lunch at the Black Dog Inn at Chilmark. From here we picked up the A303 just east of Mere (deliberately avoided it around Stonehenge!), not long after we were home, having covered a total of 1020 miles. Tucked Westie in the garage, staright to kennels and collected our dogs, both of whom seemed really glad to see us. Verdict A great trip, we both enjoyed immensely, weather could have been better, but we laughed it off. Car went like a dream after initial hiccup. Have checked it over and found nothing of concern. Checked and tightened all air hoses, been following up on water hoses as a matter of course! Did find that of the 4 nuts holding the fan onto the rad, 1 was missing, the others were still in place but finger tight. Have now fitted secondary locknuts. I didn't fit nylocs deliberately, as I was worried about shearing the M6 stud off where it's welded to an Ali bracket. The various grounding I've done has all been on the chassis hoop as far as I can see, so really pleased, Dread to think what it would have been like had I norpt changed the sump and done the cooling system mods. Half hood has been baptised, and worked a treat. Found the heater was really useful for de misting, and taking the chill off on fresh days. Up on stands for check over after washing Nose off to check and tighten air hoses! Chassis hoop been doing its job! Thank you for reading, hope it's not been too boring. Adge1 point
