  1. As much as I think that autonomous cars are a complete and utter waste of time and massive amounts of money, the report does state that the lady wasn't on a proper crossing. So no matter if a computer or a mere mortal driving sounds like if someone steps out into the road unexpectedly the end result is the same. Computers can't alter physics.

  6. If you stay a member of this forum for long you will end up ditching a lot of your supplied full kit parts for better shinier ones, probably as you build..... Members are keen to spend your money in a helpful and informative way from their experience. If you go for a kit be sure you have read the build threads here so you can see what people end up replacing and see if that tugs at your wallet with the lure of something completely unnecessary but shinier, cooler or lighter.... The factory stuff is absolutely fine, but as everything with a manufacturer, its built to a budget and most people accidentally forget some parts they bought over the long build period and true costs are not often shared unless you really make a friend I did not build my car but ever since buying it have replaced just about everything except the chassis with something "better". I dont regret it at all, it's my hobby, just be sure what you are buying before you make that purchase. Best of luck and welcome

  7. You'll be most welcome! I'm happy to take you out to show you the lines in a slower car (MK1 MX5) and you're welcome to drive it too. Sometimes helps to learn a place at a slower pace then build up through the day. Would be happy to passenger with you and drive your car if it's helpful to you, I know Rockingham well and hold the current class D record there. You can decide on the day if you're comfortable with that. I have an intercom system to enable conversation as well.

  9. I know the feeling! The Honda engine and box, are physically big items, with “big” ancillaries, weight is the downside, the upside is that they’re near bomb proof even at medium levels of supercharging or turbo charging! As said above though, some have gone through various permutations of swapping the stock throttle body, water pump and alternator out for lighter items, and saved approx 17 kg on the engine! Furthermore, as it was designed for rear wheel drive use, it doesn’t need fancy water rails and conversion parts to adapt it from a front wheel drive orientation. It is amongst a small handful of other engines, amongst the most charismatic in look, sound and feel when used in Seven-type cars, especially with the I dependant throttle bodies fitted.

  10. No,but it looks very nice and great spec

  11. Not with throttle bodies I think they knock about 17kg off.

  13. Actually - she knows exactly what it cost and has contributed to a significant portion of the UCFA* In fairness - my original budget was when I was looking at 'unfinished projects' - but it was SWMBO who convinced me to get a Westy starter kit She also knows the old "it was £30" line too well to let me get away with it... * Uncontrolled Carbon Fibre Addiction

  15. Yeah with some sorting out I could store everything whilst still having plenty of warm space for the build.

  21. Sorry a change of plan. My son has a university open day on Saturday. I need to take him to Birmingham Sorry for the change.. - Yep, please count me in (a fiver is good). I don't usually stay over after the Friday trackday and miss the Saturday/Sunday I plan to stay over this year.. so a 'few sherries' Friday evening would be a good addition I've booked place for the meal on the website.

  22. In terms of full kit vs modular build - It is one of those things that's up to you and how much you like to do. As Steve has just pointed out you have the option to buy a starter kit and build in what you need or want. It can make your life easier to get it all in one go (or from one source) especially if you are not keen on buying various parts from all over the place (that can also add to hidden costs like shipping) and all the parts will be new and you will have piece of mind. You may also find that the need for more power isn't as great in reality as you imagine from the outset. I'm pretty happy with mine after upgrading the gearbox and shedding some weight off it - and I come from a bike background where for me the thrill was always diving hard on the brakes into tight corners and accelerating out as fast as possible, preferably on the back wheel. I now find I am chasing the ability to use the reasonable power I have rather than hungering for more - as in reality, the car is way more capable than my driving skill allows for. So it's track days for me, where I learn off my more experience peers, and soon it will be sprints where I can do the same. I aim to improve the handling & traction, lose more weight if possible and importantly improve ME in order to get the most out a car that already has more power to weight than your average Ferrari!

  26. Welcome and good choice to go Westfield from bike - it's what I did after 30+ years of hooning on two wheels and don't regret it. I also wanted a build, so definitely know where you are coming from. I originally wanted a BEC - something like a Busa or 1000cc Blade engine would have suited - but for various reasons I ended up building a 2.0 Zetec engined car. This puts out a smidge under 185bhp on throttle bodies and is an absolute hoot (especially when mated to a decent ratio gearbox). In a recent thread (will post a link later when I get a mo) the engine choice topic was discussed at length - and really budget vs power vs use are the deciding factors. Many people argue (and I tend to agree) that for a road going car 180-ish bhp is pretty 'optimal' as it's difficult to safely use any more on public roads and yet still gives you a real sharp car. Of course this is very subjective and many others can't live without the huge kick in the rear of a big boosted/tuned engine on the odd bit of road you can try and use it - so each to their own (popcorn required for the debate as always) But £20k is a healthy build budget, but just shy of what it might cost for a fully new Sport 250 build if that tickled your fancy. You might be able to do a 1600 EcoBoost - but bear in mind the big cost of the ECU and mapping needs to be done by someone who really knows them (I believe) - that will depend on your location too. You will do a Zetec engined build with all new parts for under £20k - but bear in mind if you end up with a hunger for power, then the Zetec isn't the most cost effective engine to tune. Also note that the 'usual' gearbox will be one with horrid ratios, so allow £2k for a decent one (less the cost of the one on offer) The s2000 is a cracking engine and well suited to our cars - but it is very heavy, so the added power does get offset a little and as mentioned, prices are steep, so you may struggle to keep under budget. If you can afford it though - the noise as it comes onto the cam is lovely! The Duratec HE engine is a good option, it should do 190bhp with throttle bodies as standard and is easier to tune than the Zetec if you need more later. Engines can be bought new too. £20k is about right I think. The 'budget' option is the Mazda - and I only say budget because the engines are cheap, plentiful and available. In standard trim they don't put out a great deal, but they are very easy to boost and thus deliver way more BHP per £ than most other options available. It can be a budget build by going the full SDV (single donor vehicle) route which means you save a lot on the parts used and get the 'age related' plate - but nothing stopping you getting a full 'mega' chassis and fitting a used fully recon engine to get a new plate if you want one. IVA it without the turbo, then fit that later for sh**s n giggles. Should be within the £20k here including the turbo later. There's also bike engines - but as you don't mention this I'll leave it for now.

  28. In all seriousness, when the name first came up, I remember doing some internet digging; he very much seemed to split opinion in the TVR community, a lot complained that he’d essentially destroyed the bargain restoration market by hoovering so many up and selling them for top money. On the other hand, those already with TVR’s, especially ones needing serious work, loved the fact that there cars were now selling for that much more!

  29. I think TVR Glen is the boy! He's keeping prices for our cars nice and high - If people think £8.5k for a write off that needs repairing before it is drivable is an easy fix® bargain - then mine's got to be worth twice that

  33. Scary to think just how much damage there might be to the chassis if you properley checked it.on a jig as you should do. Wonder why he had to spray the body and not just buy a red rear arch. Oh maybe the body had been hit pretty badly then !!!! Sorry, I'm being cynical.

  34. Here's a couple more NZ vids of Sevens out and about. This first one is on the inland road that runs down the top of the South Island to Christchurch. When the 2010 earthquake that destroyed most of the Christchurch CBD occurred, it also took out a good few miles of the coast road, which is State Highway 1, the main trunk road that runs the length of NZ. So this twisty back-road for a long while was the only route south to Chch. This one ends up at the Mt John Observatory, with a magic 360 deg view which includes the mighty Southern Alps that run almost the entire length of the South Island.

  35. Perhaps WF took inspiration from Steve's 250 build to duct the in-coming air, as I've not seen one like this in any of the current builds?

  37. Hi Kenton, We are so sorry to hear Tony passed away recently. Please accept our condolences. Mooch and I visited him to view No 42 in the workshop all that time ago. He was a very gracious and welcoming host, keen to point out how he had put his car together. I think I found your hat under the front scuttle a good while later - a souvenir from the build. I have some photos we took on the day, which I would be only to pleased to send if you would like a copy. No 42 has spent time with me blatting around the Cotswolds, to Castle Combe, Goodwood, up the Prescott Hill, and down to Le Mans. I think Tony was very proud of his car, and I hope he was happy with the home it went to. Very best wishes Jon

  38. This car was built by my father in law with some help from me (lifting heavy bits as Tony had MS) It's build was the last thing Tony was able to do before his MS took hold. At his funeral last week pictures of him building it featured in the slide show, we were wondering where it was, now we know! Good luck with the sale All the best Kenton
