I think this would work and make lots happy- Soften all targets by about 25% ( bit more for A+B) But remove cap. Then everyone feels like a driving god for beating TT, all novices also see themselves exceeding TT But fastest will still win3 points

Been looking forward to this for weeks. Car back together with new carpets and been on starvation diet so can fit in as much food as possible! Weather forecast is cold and clear so planning to come roofless. See you at McD for first course.2 points

So far... ben discussed about: Rule back the "mini trophy" regulations. Leave alone the TT and avoid calculations and so to be stabilized in a few seasons (and you agreed with that)... And been suggesting a way to encourage the real roadgoing cars (95% of the car on this club) to ensure even more helthier entry lists, and ensure enought people getting bait by the thrill of the competition, and how the TT in the A and B classes aren't helping being stablished by "sprint oriented cars" in the best case... being a crazy calculation from a D class in the worst. I encourage you to copy and paste where have been suggested that people with slow cars should win. I really think we are loosing the prespective, and I feel many people is in an unnnecessary "defensive position" some even trying to judge each ones personal circumstances over the actual topic. All our moanings, suggestions... are genuine from the back of the field, from how they can be seen from the "bottom" classes. None of the things been asked to consider or to re-discuss are going to allow a roadgoing pinto with 30yo spax shocks and michelin energy win the championship, so really, i don't understant whats wrong with real roadgoing cars guys, trying to explain how the feel in the roadgoing classes.2 points

I don't know anyone who thinks that way or who has expressed that - is it possible that there is a confusion between providing motivation to newcomers and thinking that offers unearned rewards?2 points

As I check the forecast for Ollerton - Nought degrees at 9.30am!!! - Glen is busy filling his hip flask with whisky. My new and unintentional hobby seems to be Extreme Ice Cycling, as my commute was yet again very 'heart in my mouth' as I balanced along the untreated cycle paths this morning. Tomorrows new and unintentional hobby is Extreme Ice Westfielding - I might be the one needing a whisky by tomorrow night. Drive slow and safe everyone, except Martyn, who will no doubt be dough nutting his way there1 point

Sounds good to me! Seriously though, why is there a cap on points score? Is it from the days when TTs were still being established?1 point

my only observation is target times will never be perfect ,for when the msa decide the next tyre out there that is to good they will put it in the 1c band and your problem will start again . ditch finders are the future and hans devices and cages for when you crash . i think the team have a big problem trying to balance the rules to appease everyone . which they wont be able to do im afraid yes you need to get new blood but i think its more the cost due to the msa that has caused the problems not the target times . when i joined as a novice in my car it still had carpets std gearbox and i used it on the road full tank etc etc .but i was in class f because it had 1b tyres and aero screen . that was the rules . i could have put on 1A tyres on it and windscreen and entered a lower class . but i was not worried about about that i just wanted to see how i could compete against the fast boys . i think its good being the under dog and improving your car to the best you can .and see how close you can get to the others in your class. after all the biggest gains are early on as you start out and it gets harder as to progress but thats what drives most people on . if you make it to easy people will come and people will go just as quick [ if its to easy] .no challenge i still dont understand the std westfield bit . no westfield is ever std and newer the car the better spec it is .1 point

Hi Guy's Thanks for all your comments and advise much appreciated! I have decided on a 42 mm Coolex base upon Craig's very strong recommendation! Thanks again Glutey1 point

Novices with bike engined cars then become a problem as they are only eligible in classes E and F where 1C tyres are currently allowed. Admittedly they could run 1Bs in the class but competing against time set on 1C would be more difficult The cost of a HANS device versus the price of a new set of tyres would be a close call. The HANS device would be my choice1 point

Could I remind everybody that the all the classes, championships etc do not have a minimum number of rounds. We score either from the best 10 or 8 results ( if you only do 4 events thats ok as we use those points. )The mini sprint is for people who do 6 or less events.1 point

Now that we have all calmed down a little bit, I would like to summarise the points that have arisen into a concise list, which I hope you will all agree with. 1. It would be a good idea to have separate awards for Experts and Novices in the Sprint Challenge. a. Removing the experts seems to cause ill feeling, and no points have been raised to support removing experts in this thread. 2. The target time differential (where actual times are unavailable) between Classes A&B compared to Classes D&E, should be 4% rather than 2%. a. This is supported by analysis of the 2017 times for experts, as well as estimates from several experienced competitors. 3. Novice target times (and classes), would in ideal circumstances be available, and would be motivating for novices. a. However for practical reasons this may require too much effort to implement. b. Novice targets have been successfully produced in previous years. 4. “True” Road going classes, and their definition remains unresolved. a. A separate thread should be started for this debate, as it is not part of changes to the 2018 Regs, or the explanation of the changes. b. All of the 36 MSA regulated events scheduled in the Speed Series will use the road going definition from the Blue Book. c. Even if the SSOT come up with a new definition, at best it will only apply to the two events organised by WSCC. I believe that this summary is a reasonable overview, which may help the SSOT from having to go through the entire thread! Minima Class and Race.xlsx1 point

Why do you not feel that the novice championship (and now mini sprint series) is enough as it pits them against people in the same boat?1 point

I'm not disagreeing with you John but if the SSOT want to attract new blood into the speed series then this is something that needs to be looked at more closely by all involved. Not everyone has the limitless budgets that many of the current speed series competitors appear to enjoy and new entrants probably won't be willing to spend a fortune changing their car to have a go at sprinting for the first time only to then make it less suitable for the road where it would normally be used. we all have our own ideas of what would work and what won't. And you clearly have an opinion on this so what are your suggestions for attracting new entrants to the speed series in the future and keeping the initial costs low for them?1 point

Mostly as expected really. Glad they dropped Celebrity Brain Crash and the Moaning Yank driver. Mostly harmless nonsense I guess.1 point

Yes, I can see better what your saying here, but this is not the way you put it earlier! I do believe these should be looked at to try and encourage many more new competitors to start out on a journey through novicedom. Hopefully once on that journey, enough will be hooked and able to travel into expertdom by developing themselves and upgrading car extensively (or purchasing sprint one) in order to progress through improvement to the forefront of Championship competition, thus maintaining the long term viability of the Series.1 point

Again, that's not how its coming across. People seem to be wanting the rules and TTs to be changed to match their spec of car rather than aspiring to match their car's spec to the existing rules. I'm not wanting to get involved in an argument, just stating how it is coming across.1 point

That's a shame, as that definitely wasn't intended. & I'm sure I speak for all contributors. The last 2 years I would have welcomed much much more competition in Novice A. My biggest achievement being 2nd in Sprint Championship which I felt well more chuffed with. Working hard over time to develop car & driver skills/competance to win The Championship is not being challenged. I don't think anyone would wish thus. It's why SS is such a great championship & Westfield competitors achieve FTDs and Class Wins on the day. To me it's about future Newbies, Novices, keeping involvement and level competition within TTs. Me and the Lardy One will be experts in 2 events, and all I'll be aiming for is to not be the slowest.1 point

Yep. That is exactly what we want... easier targets to be achiveable by slow cars and non capable drivers. Ehhhhrr.... not really.1 point

Forgot to add I will update this thread will all the stuff i have bought and prices paid and list any issues etc and a review of my thoughts before and after. Then hopefully it might be of interest or help to some people in the future.1 point

Yes Smokey . I agree with your aim In my eyes the MSA have pretty much killed off the casual competitor in standard road cars1 point

I thought it was excellent, although I wished I'd sent the kids to bed before they heard the beige trouser story! It's one of the programs I enjoy for the TV picture quality, too.1 point

I really enjoyed it, perhaps my sense of humour is regressing, or perhaps it’s ‘cause I watched it after getting home from the Cheshire Area Christmas curry! On the basis that Celebrity Brain what ever it was called has been dropped now and that the American segment has also gone - though we don’t yet know what will replace the latter, I’d say an improvement over Series One. I always quite enjoyed the concept of the interview/Guest driving segment in the old TG, while it’s true, with the wrong guest it could be dire, with the right ones, there were some really great interview segments over the years. - Clarkson did learn how to do a good guest interview over the years TG 2.0 ran, provided it was someone he had chemistry with. So I’m prepared to sit back and see how the new guest segment fairs over the course of the series. The thing for me personally with TGT, and the old TG before it, I don’t watch it for car reviews as such, though it’s interesting to drool over the latest hypercars or whatever, I watch it for the inspiration to do daft things like road trips to Le Mans to go camping with a couple of mates, in our Westfields.1 point

OK folks - the Speed Series previous results pages will need to be rewritten to suit the new site design. This will take a bit of doing though - as they are in a very different format, are quite involved and have a lot of data in them! So in the mean time - I have found where the old versions are buried and here's some links for you. NOTE: the left hand navigation WILL NOT WORK. The links are no longer correct and you will not be able to navigate using them! The top right menu seems to be intact - so in theory you should be able to access the required info. I'm sure Tigger and Andy will have some ideas on how to add this archived data back in, so will leave that to them - but for now hope this helps: http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2016/Expert/ http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2016/Novice/ http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2015/ http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2014/ http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2013/ http://wscc.co.uk/BACKUP20170301/speedseries/2012/1 point
