Hi all, Got my Westfield yesterday, got it insured and taxed today and had my first proper drive. Didn't go far, as I wanted to see what issues it showed, xflow and twin 40's mean re learning how to start a car old school style. Mrs even enjoyed our drive out, that shocked me to be honest ! Loud, smells like a proper car, and lots if little niggles to sort. 1st was a big oil leak, think I've traced it to a full catch can, will find out tomorrow if it's dry enough for another run. Need some doors and a half roof at least, as we'd like to use it all year ! Expect questions ! Graeme1 point

Just going through the emoticon list today when I see this for the first time since my retirement... I wonder which Admin could have possibly created and uploaded that emoticon... it's a real mystery, that's for sure. On a completely unrelated note, I was saddened to see that @Stuart Faulkner - Shows & Events Coordinator has developed jaundice and that his weight has ballooned to 40 stone. I really don't know how he fits in or drives his car, but I'm wishing him all the best for a speedy recovery. Happily, Stuart's "nurse" is "looking after" me and my broken arm for the next several weeks, so he'll just have to get another nurse to sort him:1 point

I normally ban central heating in our house until October but as I'm away the Mrs has taken advantage and it's been on everyday this week.1 point

It is quite common to cover the holes with mini air deflectors . Does nothing for aero, but you use the same holes drilled in the nose . Either that or cover the outside with polythene and fill the holes with fibre glass . Then flat and touch in with a colour.1 point

The offers are pretty regular! Sign up for Halfords email newsletter and keep an eye out for news of them on the Boardroom - someone generally post up when they're on. One of their decent, bigger, pro socket sets will cover 90% of what you need, even down to some spanners and ratchet spanners and Allen keys. Add to that a decent set of screwdrivers, (rather than just relying on the holder plus bits that you usually get socket sets). Brake bleed nipple spanner. A set of pliers, both standard and needle nosed, plus a small pair of side cutters and needle nose pliers - invaluable on wiring jobs. A pair of Mole grips can make a handy portable vice, or third hand. A set of files, b a s t a r d*, half round and round and a large hack saw are very useful for general metal/plastic cutting and shaping. *sorry, swear filter changed the name of the file automatically! Engineers hammer, (seriously, it's the name!), and a soft i.e. Rubber or hide faced mallet. Knife. (Stanley, or similar). Hand pop riveter. Cordless drill, plus bits. Low entry trolley jack and axle stands, but a pair of ramps as well is very useful for servicing, as you can raise both ends of the car safely and easily. There's lots more handy stuff, but on the whole, they just help you do jobs faster or more easily, whereas that lot is probably a good percentage of the "basics" that will let you tackle most jobs. Bear in mind when it comes to specialist stuff, unless you're really out in the wilderness, there are usually club members happy to loan out things like engine cranes, engine specific tools etc.1 point

Now is the perfect time to kit yourself out properly- most of us have random collections of tools gathered through the years. Occasionally Halfords have big discounts on Professional range socket sets- pick yourself up one of the £100 - £150 sets and that will be a good start! Here1 point

They're fitted correctly, and the outer tread pattern is what it is, ie non-directional. You're not the first to query this btw...!1 point

You really want to get the catch tank as high as possible. I have a take off from the rocker cover, as well as the crank case breather in the block below the rearward carb, both going to a tank mounted on the scuttle. Because I was happy that the oil in the catch tank was clean, I eventually plumbed a drain hose back to the sump, which returns via a modified fuel pump blanking plate. I now only have the "usual" anti-rust crossflow oil deposits1 point

I saw a photo of him returning from his first drive in it and he had a small blood mark on his forehead--not sure if he headbutted the steering wheel.1 point

In that case, a 620S is circa 610 kg! The point I was getting at though is that with such prestige "halo" models as the Sport 250, they're immediately hobbled to some extent by the cost of the power plant and its ancillary items. Start throwing in the extra costs of the development, that I don't argue, is required and the cost of the car starts ending up in territory that's damned difficult for the factory to inhabit. It's an interesting question, would the factory be better concentrating on a simpler model, or models; a more basic power train, BUT, honing and improving the whole of the car, both for a production point of view and a dynamics point of view, where such costs could be spread over a greater number of very similar, bar options, cars, sold at a lower price, or should they keep pressing on with premium models like the Sport 2000S, Mega S2000 and Sport 250. My heart wants the latter, and accepts that ahem, user input is required in the development. But my head tends to suspect that they might be better if they could invest around a single chassis, single power train and single, bar optional wind screen and aeroscreen set ups etc, body style. With models only differentiated by the options list and perhaps, if possible, some engine tuning packages. Concentrate the money you have on getting one basic body set, right, and to a decent quality, Concemtrate on getting one basic chassis right. Yes, produce a few different spring/damper/ARB packages for touring, fast road, track or whatever. But the point is you're not trying to use limited funds to hone everything from a base level Mazda car to a Sport 250. once you've spent a few years getting your basic formula right again, then maybe consider diversifying...1 point
