Loads of folk have said why bother with cables, wifi is all you need. Well seeing how I was virtually rebuilding the house I ran CAT6 to all the rooms. And I sort of used to do it for a living 20 years ago. This weekend was time to start wiring it up, TV room first as the temporary WiFi had been struggling with large media files. Well, think it was worth it as I just dragged a 2gb film from my NAS to the media PC in an estimated 15 secs. It peaked at 89.3mbps transfer. And it is currently hopping through a few hubs that will be removed ASAP to only use the new Netgear 116. Hoping after some optimisation it might hit three figures. And not suprisingly my media PC now has no trouble streaming from the NAS. Got to love gigabit switches. Mind you cabling in the patch panel was a biblical agg. Turns out my punch tool isnt really right for it and I had to push all the cores home with a super fine screwdriver. After it took me an hour to figure out that was the problem... So was I just being OCD, or do any of you hanker for cables..? And will any of the IT geeks spot the cabling mistake. Picture was taken before I clocked it and fixed it.1 point

from sunny(?) Somerset. As previously said, start a build thread, you won't regret it. I find mine is invaluable on my build. Impressive amount of knowledge and experience on here. Friendly as well.1 point

I wonder if Scott realises that a deranged ex-chairman as a crossword clue would be a rich axeman?1 point

As Adam said There's a lot to like about predictability and progressive handling of a slightly harder tyre. And definitely the best route to learning to drive hard. My early years of Westfielding were on Toyo T1R's and I don't regret any of them. And I am sure I can drive the R1Rs (and Sprint soft ZZRs) harder because of it.1 point

Left-field vote: good quality road tyres, such as Michelin Pilot Sports, Continental Premium Contact, etc. I've recently fitted a set of Conti Eco Contact 3s to my car and loving them. Plenty of grip (only around 2.5s a lap slower round Blyton than 888s), more comfortable, cheaper, better in the rain, more progressive when they do let go. Lots of benefits...1 point

Powerline adapters work really well. For any area that can't be cabled these are perfectly acceptable. I see these things get frowned upon by some but in my experience they work plenty good enough, especially in a domestic environment. I tend to use TP-Link plugs that also have a couple of ethernet ports in them. This way I can cable devices like TV's etc as well as having wifi. Great for bedrooms/workshops/spare rooms where wifi is needed but where there are other things that would benefit from a reliable network connection. Of course if the ultimate is required then a cupboard with a bunch of power, a patch panel and a small rack with shielded CAT6 or CAT7 is the gold standard although I doubt many of us would see the benefit especially when the slowest part of the vast majority of networks is the internet connection itself1 point

Villager reactions can vary, some smile and wave, some shout and wave their arms for you to slow down (even though your doing 20mph), but by the time you've driven through followed by a wave of car alarms in your wake, everyone wants to murder you1 point

One word of caution for those doing long distance touring that use softer/sticky trackday tyres like R888R's, Yokohama AO48's etc; it's not a problem necessarily if you're just bimbling along, but I know of a few (Caterham) owners who've got caught out doing the European Alpine Pass tours, where you're driving quite briskly on the passes and easily racking up a journey of a few thousand miles. They've litterally hit the tread wear limits whilst up in the mountains, and been stuck with illegally "bald" tyres, in both the cases that I'm aware of, they ended up having to get tyres shipped to the nearest garage and had to get them change over locally before they could carry on!! So if using semi slicks on a long distance trip, where you know there will be some aggressive driving, do please make sure you've got plenty of life in them before you set out.1 point

Welcome! I grew up in Chalfont St Peter. As mentioned earlier, the HBB meet is this Thursday at the Grove Lock in Leighton Buzzard, come along and have a chat. As for garage recommendations, there really is only one place to go - MH Autos in Milton Keynes. Martin is a member on here, a really great bloke who knows Westfields inside out and he competes in his own too. He'll be at the meet on Thursday so you can meet him, ask whatever questions you like and get booked in! (No I'm not on commission! He's basically rebuilt mine for me & is my go to guy for everything, as well as being a great mate. He was the 2015 novice champ and helped me to become the 2016 novice champ, so pedigree is assured!!). Hope to meet you and see your car soon All the best Barny1 point
