Shakedown run at 4pm. Quick blat of 5miles. 1mile from home, battery warning lamp comes on. Fanbelt burst / missing when I get home ..... Bummer. Visit to Halfors ... Don't stock fan belts anymore, can get one for next day .... Visit Smaller car shop Overdrive in Airdrie, same response, can get it next day. Need belt today as run to Applecross is first thing tomorrow morning. Guy at Overdrive then phones his supplier, ask for urgent delivery of belt. Supplier agrees and after 30mins, belt arrives at Overdrive shop. 10 out of 10 for customer support ... Shop stayed open extra 30 mins waiting for belt Then follows 3 hours to get belt on. Belt I purchased is marginally to small and won't go over the pulley rims. Had to unbolt the alternator and add the belt then bolt the alternator bracket back up again. 9pm back together ... Run it for 10 mins to get up to temp. looking good ..... Roll on the weekend run .....3 points

New set of points in and it fired straight up. I've not run it down the road yet but did seem to be running better. Many thanks for the pointers so far. After this I'll look into a conversion.2 points

As it's the longest day on the 21st, I'm planning a late night run on Friday 23rd June to the East coast, then head back West following the light. Meet at the Fox and Grapes at 5pm, head for the coast and back towards Leeds, it will still be light until 10pm. If anyone can get off work for then, I'll see you there.1 point

Hello again, I've been a user of the forum in the past, but now Ive finally bitten the bullet and joined up proper. Here's my original Start Line post Myself and my incomplete Westfield owning friend were both made redundant at the end of 2012, so there has been a short break in proceedings Now with renewed enthusiasm, we're back on it. So, short story long, 1991 Seiw Pinto Westfield bought as an unfinished project in about 1993 Some work done to it after purchase, then not much until about 2010. Missing parts bought with the view to carrying on. 2016 Rolling chassis moved in to my dusty shed with plenty of space to work on it. 2017 work has re started. I will pick your brains with the hope of finally getting this car on the road. I'll start a thread with the general plan( there's a plan?) and some pics latter.1 point

Brill, I am glad you are coming along Martyn, I owe your wife a piece of cake. New meeting point, considering who is coming, we can meet at The Knockerdown Inn, DE6 1NQ. It is just outside the main entrance to Ca**ington Water and at that time of day, 9am, it should be easy to park. Are you booked in Martyn or do you want my other spare ticket?1 point

We are coming too! I've been so busy working (I'm still at work now) and so hot and bothered in this heat wave that I have not been on here at all so I am just catching up! Are we still meeting in Ashbourne or would somewhere else be more appropriate?1 point

You may well be right about Ford points gaps, Scott, I haven't owned a non-injected Ford except my Pinto engined Westfield. In any case, the static timing is critical. One possible technique for starting is to contrive to spun the engine with the ignition off, then to switch it one while it is at full crank speed. Unfortunately the Aldon Ignitor doesn't do anyhting different from points except go on forever untouched. What I do know for sure is that if a gap becomes wider, the timing is advanced, and vice versa so a worn down cam follower heel will steadily retard the ignition and probably lead to poor running as described. My old Hillman Hunter had Lucas points and one fell off while driving leaving the carrier to meet the opposing point and the gap went to 45 thou from 15 thou and the timing to about 60º BTDC instantly. The exhaust system blew up with the ensuing backfire! Luckily this all happened outside a Rootes Group garage which sold ignition parts and I was on my way, albeit noisily, within half an hour. Those were the days when I carried a full tool kit everywhere.1 point

Back from Le Mans and Normandy now, but still catching up on stuff, I'll have to give this one a miss, sorry.1 point

There are very good reasons why modern car makers, (on the whole) have gone for a less is more approach to instruments and information, presented to the driver. And it's not all about cost either, especially in these days of ecu' for everything and a huge amount of vehicle data floating round the OBD system. It's often nicknamed gauge-anxiety, where you become fixated on what they're doing, instead of driving. There is a wealth of information they can tell you, particularly in conjunction with each other. But in truth, very few of us are able to read the deeper meanings, beyond water hot/cold, oil pressure high/low. Many, perhaps even most of us now, have simply spent to long with cars designed to gently tell us white lies; gauges that don't seem to move much, just point in to the "All is OK" zone, due to non linear scales and heavy damping. I really, really, wouldn't look to increase the information load in the cockpit, it will just be one more thing to worry about, every time it reports back normal, but perhaps unexpected behavior. As Ian said, oil pressure or temperature gauges won't tell you that you're running low, as such, though they will eventually show the damage being caused while running low. You're already doing the "correct" thing, dipping the oil regularly and keeping an eye on its level. Dont forget, if checking levels after a run, or at the petrol station etc mid run. Even when the oil is warm/hot, it does take a little time for it all to drain back into the sump. So don't measure and top up immediately you stop, as you risk over filling. Over filling itself isn't good for an engine, and is best avoided.1 point

You're not going to get any clues from the cockpit, sorry until it's too late. Just check it as you've been doing periodically. If you let it run low enough to affect pressure it will likely result in a big bill.1 point

Hi I have for sale a set of 4 'as new' black with polished rim minilight style wheels et 13 from the markings on the wheels. 13x6 jj ford fitment 4 x108 The wheels have had a set of A539's 185/60r13 tyres fitted, balanced and never been used, think they still have the stickers on. I also have a spare set of 4 Yokohama A539 tyres that have been fitted and used for 1 short wet qualifying session then removed from the wheels. Still got some of the bobbles on. Price wise £250 for the wheels with tyres and £125 for the spare set. £350 for 4 wheels and 8 tyres. All either collection or am willing to courier at cost. I live on the Isle of Wight so am guessing courier would be the preferred option, if however I am coming to the mainland I may be able to bring with me. I will add pictures later today when I dig them out from the store. Lee1 point

My suspects in order: Points closed up Timing incorrect (no room to advance under load) If connected, vacuum advance pipe blocked / perished / disconnected Vacuum advance unit on dizzy failed if connected Dizzy ignition advance weights frozen Bad coil that intermittently cuts out once hot (hence cold operation question) Cracked dizzy cap that opens up once hot (see above) Highly doubt fuel system fault simply because it revs fine when not under load, indicating an ignition advance issue.1 point

Also to add double check your oil pressure switch activation pressure. I would use something around the 21 PSI mark as if set to lower you may not get enough time. Yes this may trigger at a hot idle but better that that stopping the engine too late.1 point

Yes there are, which would include that of surface spread of flame. I'm avoiding commenting or speculating too much at the moment though as I'm in France and have been since the fire occurred. I would like to gather all the facts myself as to design of the building and who carried out the statutory inspections of the work before I say much more rather than relying on the media reports.1 point
-
Unfortunately not Mike. If the alterations to the building had been designed and constructed to comply with UK regulations which in this case would have been the Build Act 2000 then by that very nature you are deemed to comply with the law. Criminal Responsibility can only be apportioned if the law has been broken. Regardless of what the Building Regulations and Build Act says though this accident has shown that a rethink of some of the current regulations needs to be carried out as a matter of urgency Once all the facts are fully known.1 point

And remember to service them on a regular basis. A few years ago I did a car boot at Sodbury (big Landrover event near Newbury) and at the end of the day I had two very old (over 10 years) fire extinguishers left. Instead of binning them me and my brother decided to use them (as you do after a couple of beers). Despite being correctly 'charged' hardly anything came out. Now I keep a log of the extinguishers I have in my phones diary as a reminder to service or replace them at set intervals.1 point

Desperate times and really really sad. I was involved as a building safety lead about 20 years ago in a data centre, we had a company train us on evacuation, the consultant chappie was ex-royal marine and his messages have never left me, all about having an exit plan for every situation. Sounds OTT but every hotel I stop in I walk the fire route from my room so I/we know the way out came in handy last year when I was in San Jose on business and at 3am the an A/C unit was alight on the roof of the hotel about staying calm as those around you are running around in blind panic ... Everyone should have a plan for a fire at home and have at least 1 escape route and you all should know it ...1 point
