After two long years of kidding myself that I was ever going to be able to get him back on the road myself, I faced reality and called Grizlee and had the following conversation... "Whose fault is it that I have a 75% road worthy Westie in the garage, OK I accept the fact he's in a terrible state is my fault, but whose fault is it I even have a Westie..? The answer is, its yours. So like it or not it is your duty as a decent human being to help me sort this out..." Grizlee was a little bit taken aback, not by the responsibility but by the fact he'd been called a "decent human being", I don't think he'd ever heard those words before. "Let me get back to you" he said. A few days later it turns out that BollockyBill was now an accomplice and they would do the spannering I wasn't able to do any more. And if I could get Mr Grumpy up to them, they would fix him up. Apart from the fact we now have evidence of there being two certifiable lunatics in the North West, operation 'Find a Trailer' sprung into action. A few phone calls to mates who knew mates who knew people and two spiffing lads turned up with the most offroady Disco I've ever seen and a trailer to take Mr Grumpy away for fettling. So after pushing him onto the trailer, something the chaps said they had never seen done before - All the cars they normally move tend to weigh more than a packet of potatoes - he was strapped down. The boxes of bits (including a gearbox) was thrown into the Disco he and taken away to be cared for. I'll update this thread now and again with news on his recovery. So a massive thanks to Grizlee and BollockyBill for helping me out and it goes to prove "It's not what you know, but who you know" Their help is so typical of the members on this forum...2 points

Talking of treatments. I know my whizzy jap car wont last as long as the xflow cars , as we dont have the built in feature of the oil mist treatments for the chassis and panels. So, I may have to get some old 20/50 and lob it everywhere underneath, the garage floor, the bodywork and me, to help preserve my car than corrode . Regardless of the banter, will be good to see the old beast fire into life again. If I knew it just needed the bits listed ( so far !) I would have loved to whip a xflow out and change a box in a morning and get it running again. Good luck guys with get it singing !!2 points

I would say £6k tops, but I think some people can only dream or tell the missus that no one wants it, I'll have to keep it, as sure it wont go for the money he wants. eBay item number: 2529650875581 point

So, Mrs D was going through some old photos and came across this little gem of myself and the aforementioned Mrs D in my first kit car - a Ron Champion Locost. Took me 3 years to build at a grand total of about £1100! Mk2 escort running gear (1300 cc) with hand made aluminium panels and surprisingly effective fly screens! Would be nice to know what others out there had as their first kit car and if you have any old photos kicking around, please share!1 point

Yes Gary. Had the pre-lit for many years and know where it is and a good friend with the owner, after I got in contact with him here. Yellow cars are nice, except when you fit bodywork on a sunny day, like I did on a mates Westie a few weeks ago and got insect attacked1 point

May be the camera angle Thrusty, but that top car looks tiny! Is that a pre-lit? Looks very proper and original Lotus like! And I'm a little bit in love with yellow Westies I'm afraid! Call me biased if you will, but that is very nice!1 point

Up in Durness now and we arrived like drowned rats. We drove through shocking rain for about 70 miles with no roof or doors on.....because we could and we loved every minute.....well we did afterwards when we where talking about it. We where followed by a car who stopped Gary and she said that she had followed us and was amazed....I will let Gary tell the rest. We left Skye this morning and met with David and Christina who had driven for two hours to meet with us. We then all headed over to Applecross and Gail was so happy that she drove the pass and she was like and excited child at the top...she had loved every minute of the drive and it showed. From here it was upon the coast road to Gairloch.....Bob made friends with a lady who flatly refused to reverse her vehicle to let Bob pass even though it was difficult for Bob to reverse at the time. I was two feet short of having a motorbike in the cockpit with me. I drove round a sharp bend and a motorbike was on the wrong side of the road and he was about 20 feet from me heeding straight at me. I hauled all my brakes on and he did the same. He ended up on just the front wheel and he stopped right at the side of me. I looked at him and he said...."sorry" and that was about it. We where both really lucky. We continued North and said cheerio to David and Christina at Ullapool and unfortunately David left with a missing cycle wing. Onwards we went to Durness and the rain was heavy and constant....I pulled over at one point and asked everyone if they wanted their roofs on and their reply was...Where loving it...Bang on.....so we did. Anyway, loads more happened as usual but it takes so long to write but everyone of us is having a fabulous time and we have met some lovely people on our way north and we have so much to do yet. Starting to get tired a bit on a night also as our days have been full on from morning until night and already thinking about having a few days off to recover from the holiday. Day around Durness tomorrow and then going onto the Orkney islands.1 point

Thanks ThrustyJust, I wish it was as simple as the big ticket items I identified... And thanks for your offer of support. There's quite a long list of other stuff, new front wheel studs (to be honest taking 2 days to change the rears was the final nail in the coffin of my attempts to fix him), lower temp thermostat, remount the dashboard, hopefully swap the light for halogens on a relay, new seats (I still have to order), get the new MoT legal stick on front plate, properly fix up the loom repair I did and get him through the MoT And since they two guys have had him, they've already identified all the fuel hose are perished (oh that lovely ethanol eh?), Oh and top up the rear diff, I left him on stands tilted forward for so long the oil dripped out the bleed hole. And the banter is all part of the club, we are a very broad church and for all the crap the xflow dinosaurs give you next gen Playstation engined wonder boys, we are still secretly impressed by the magic that goes on in modern engines. If we all drove identikit cars, where would the fun be. I'm really looking to hear him rumble, pop and fart again - not so sure the neighbors are..! Although did any of you clock the yellow 5.0 Stang in the background? It's got a Roush exhaust on it and when it starts in the mornings I run about the house clutching my bits...1 point

I have just worked out the cost of my engine change... You basically double your purchase price, and then add another 50% on top of that1 point

3rd Westfield in just over 3 yrs for me, I don't think I will get rid of this one. No previous experience of kits apart from nearly buying a Dutton Pheaton when i was 20 yrs old, I also toyed with buying a kit (can't remember name) that was essentially a mini front sub-frame, engine and gearbox into a space frame with a single rear wheel making a delta trike. Also when I was 20 I rebuilt a Triumph Toledo with Dolemite Sprint engine gearbox and running gear and interior, which I overhauled as much as i could manage including a total head rebuild with a skim and balance, i also fabricated a manifold to allow me to run quad SUs, fitting 4 SU carbs was challenging.1 point

That's a little bit of an illusion brought about by the Boardroom, I suspect. There are quite a few members on the Boardroom who are on there nth kit, some even their 2nd, 3rd or 4th Westfield even, but the Boardroom's more frequent users, outside a smallish group of long term owners, tend to be more recent owners getting into it for the first time, as you say. What it ignores though, is that the higer proportion of members don't really do the "on-line" thing; you'd be surprised how many of them have had several kits over the years..1 point

Well, I'm all excited now as it's only one more sleep until 12 "sevens" depart for our tour around the North West Highlands. I'll post pics as and when I can - and you never know, we might bump into @Geoffrey (Buttercup) - North Yorkshire AO and gang while we are there. Can't wait!1 point

Diesels and xflows both smoke the same and rattle, so you may not even notice1 point

Hopefully will be there for this one as well. Have the rear of the car in pieces at the moment so assuming this is all sorted I'll be there.1 point

Thanks for the heads up for all of those @Julie Hall - AO Representative, Peak District AO, must admit I do like racing type ladies in lycra, sooo much better than gnarly blokes with oil under their nails talking about bores, pistons and lubrication, but not sure me leching at the bottom of your road would be appropriate, so depending on whether I get a ticket for classic car racing at Oulton I'll probably go to Curborough, or GBS, Oh i can't decide! Just a quick note on this post for clarity. We (the moderators) often get faced with a decision to hide/lock/edit a post. This is because our forum is pretty popular and some people view it as an easy way to get free "social media" advertising. It happens pretty regularly and if we didn't pounce on it, the forum would be full of people offering Viagra, easy ways to earn $10,000 a week and links to dodgy porn sites. So, we often spot a post and have to make a decision if it is something that is considered to be a "benefit to members" - after all, this forum is paid for by our members. Bearing that in mind, members have privileges and we are obliged to protect them. One of these is advertising items for sale, hence this post received our attention. After a backroom discussion, we thought this particular post was treated a little harshly and gave the wrong impression to a potential new member. It has therefore been "unlocked" and we hope everyone understands our reasoning behind the decisions.1 point
