TEL's TALES 06/17 3 Sisters 21st May 2017 As most of you know the future management/liquidity of the Three Sisters venue (or parts of it) are under review and it is to the credit of Longton DMC that they managed to keep this event on. The entry was not massive so everyone was looking forward to good weather and lots of runs in the normal LDMC tradition. The weather did stay dry all day which was a bonus as some weather forecasts had predicted a bit of the wet stuff which we would not have been amused about particularly those of us on slicks. There were 11 Westfield club members, many of who are also LDMC members, so some good completion was on the cards. P1 was completed in about 40 mins without any problems at all and Dave Cleaver’s pace showed he was out for maximum points as was John Hoyle. Del and Gary had managed to put their spare 2litre honda engine in the car whist the bigger engine is repaired and with the supercharger they were going to be fast. With motorsport you always get an unforeseen problem and this time it started in P2 and continued into T1 with major anomalies in the recorded times and delays due to reruns. The LDMC officials were on the case and did their best to sort the problems out for the afternoon runs which , in general, went well and meant we had 6 timed runs which is good value for money. During the day John Hoyle was suffering from an electrical fault on his gearchange system and his rival Dave Cleaver got stuck in with the laptop and his IT knowledge to help sort it out. The efforts even included calls to Kevin Jones at home in Harrogate to see if he could come up with any ideas. In the end John just ran with all the high tech disconnected so he could get a decent time. Mick Dent was enjoying his first visit to the track but was a little off the pace in his slick shod Busa so myself and Adam read came to his assistance to adjust the suspension and also get the wishbone bolts loosened as they were stopping movement of the shocks. He also had a sticking throttle which caused a nice spin but no damage. Matt Turner and I were ready for the battle in class G and it was Matt’s first time out this year to defend his track record. I had an interesting day softening off my suspension to suit the radial slicks I am using this year which is work in progress as I still do not have as much rear end grip as I would like. Steve was alone in class D and posted some consistent times throughout the day. Adam Read was in class A2 and had his personal ding dong with Maurici Revilla in class B2 who managed to keep it on the black stuff this year and avoid the tyre wall. It was good to see Steve Wilson out in his black Lotus Elise and he won his class to score well in class J3. The highlights of the day were Matt Turner beating me by 0.05secs on the last run (I am usually the master of this technique) which made his day, Del just pipped Gary in class H whilst Dave Cleaver took a well deserved FTD and only bothered with 2 timed runs as he had maxed out on his score. Five Westfield took the top five spots with very close times and they were Dave Cleaver, Derek Hodder, Matt Turner, Terry Everall and Gary Bunn so it was a Notts and Derby plus Yorhshire clean sweep. Mick Dent and John Hoyle were also in the top 10 so a great Westfield performance particularly as there were a few Cateringvans competing. A great day for all and no serious damage to a car with the promise of a return visit in July (which I can’t do as my family have booked me on a holiday!). I may see some of you at Pembrey in two weeks time. Best Times were Class A2 Adam Reid 48.12sec Class B2 Maurici Revilla 49.64secs Class D Steve Everall 49.23secs Class F John Hoyle 46.35secs Class G Matt Turner 44.91secs Terry Everall 44.96secs !!!!!!!!!! Class H Dave Cleaver 43.73secs FTD Derek Hodder 44.82secs Gary Bunn 45.11secs Mick Dent 47.49secs Class J2 Steve Wilson 54.20secs Terry Everall Class G competitor .4 points

Was sorting a toolkit out for the westy boot today and needed a few bits and bobs. Noticed Halfords are having one of their usual 50% off on socket sets etc but found some really cheap stuff that may be of interest. In particular this 3/8 socket set handy kit for the boot. The ratchet on it's own is 19.99. http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-18-piece-socket-set-3-8 Cheap screwdriver set http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/halfords-advanced-8-piece-screwdriver-set Also got a cheap set of Allen keys and a few other bits. Most of the sale stuff is the advanced range. All lifetime warranty.2 points

Well, just went to pick mine up and they had sold it to someone else after I ordered it! Said, they'd get me one tomorrow, but I explained that the store is a bit out of my way and I made the trip just to collect this, taking time off work too. (laid it on thick) The guy disappeared and came back two mins later with a different set - a 28 piece one retailing at £80 (sale price £25) and said, how about we give you this one for £12.50 instead? Result!2 points

Lets hope @IanK had some birthday cake, we were bereft of the stuff today. At The Wheatsheaf we met Billy, Chris and Alan After coffee, and a run down of everyone's ailments, we set off up through Buxton and over the tops. We turned right onto the lesser known roads, to take another right onto the even lesser known roads. If Alan has never been on the road before then you know it must really be in the bottom hole of nowhere The Tin Hut Coffee Tavern, Pott Shrigley Soon we arrived at The Tin Hut Coffee Tavern, it is a craft shop/cafe in a very peaceful, tranquil place, shame all these noisy sports cars have to come and ruin it . After lunch, as we were close to where Billy lived, he carried on in the same direction, we took a route up past the Cat and Fiddle. Stopping for a 'Westfield Incontinence Society' stop, before landing at everyone's favourite Castle for cake. Willersley Castle had run out of cake, how very awful, someone must have been listening to our diabetes conversation and obviously decided that we should not eat so much sugar. Toasted Teacakes it was then, with the biggest dollop of strawberry jam that I have ever seen. The conversation? what is said at a meet stays on a meet, ok with you guys? Willersley Castle car park Sat outside the Castle The cakes, of the toasted tea variety Monkeys tea party at The Castle Thanks for coming today everyone, at such short notice, I hope you have enjoyed the views and the roads as much as we have.2 points

Not getting this to the track often enough. Thinking about if I should pick up a new project. SVA’d and registered in Feb 2009 Spec :- Engine :- 230bhp, 190lbft Duratec 2.3L I4 Raceline shallow sump Cosworth forged connecting rods Carry over crank Lead indium BE bearings Omega pistons (High compression) Cylinder head extrude honed (polished ports using extrude hone process, https://extrudehone.com/) Fast road Cosworth cams Cosworth uprated valve springs Jenvy direct to head throttle bodies Cosworth high flow green fuel injectors GEMS engine management setup at Northampton motors sport by Troy (see power curve in attachements) Base engine built for 260 BHP but only tuned to 230 Cosworth lightened flywheel, AP racing heavy duty clutch and cover Raceline 4 into 2 into 1 low pressure headers and silencer for exhaust system Large airbox fitted to lower drive by noise. Has no problem at Donnington with 98 DB driveby. Transmission:- Quaife straight cut type 9 gear box. Alloy case, Alloy top cover External breather fitted Serviced about 1 year ago @ JP race shop Silverstone. Ratios : 1 2.2 2 1.54 3 1.21 4 1 5 0.87 I used to have a 0.92 5th gear for sprinting. This is also available if you wanted to swap in the future but I found the 0.87 a much better drop and gives a higher top speed. Differential :- Sierra 3.92 7.5” LSD diff. Diff uprated by Bara motorsports to cope with the torque difference. Vehicle:- Westfield SEIW race chassis Bonded and riveted alloy and carbon fibre panels Welded in roll structure with mounts to fit a full cage (but I didn't purchase a full cage) Alloy bespoke radiator from Northampton Radiators Performance silicone hoses all round Westfield wide track front suspension Polly bushes all round Cast iron front uprights with Westfield alloy rears AVO alloy shocks with various spring rates available (about 4 sets with the car for you to change) Front and rear anti roll bars Front brakes, Hispec 4 pot alloy brakes with pagid pads, black diamond drilled and grooved discs Rear brakes, Sierra caliper with black diamond grooved discs and pagid pads. All discs and pads have lots of life left as they are recent. Quick release steering wheel with column extension for better driving position. Fixed seats. Can we thrown away or moved or replaced with others to suit your comfort. Digidash. Battery cut off switch. Extended quick shift for transmission with 8 ball gear knob. Access to digidash and gems ecu directly in front. Plastic fuel tank with integrated swirlpot and high pressure fuel pump (running a return fuel system). Transmission and Differential breather pots located at rear of car. Brake bias done by foot pedal balance bar. Compomotive 13” wheels with Toyo Proxes 888 competition tyres. Lots of tread left. Only two track evenings use. Good Bits:- I created this as a track tool first and foremost but also made it legal for the road. I’ve not MoT’d it for a few years now though as I don’t enjoy it much on the road. Q plate means that the MoT is quick. Emissions is just, “is it smoking?” It is ballistic on the track. I hope you can see that from the video (This Link), Straight cut gears make a noise and camera is hard mounted to structure. There is very little that can get past this car and it also passes Donnington’s drive by noise reg. It embarrasses cars significantly more expensive than it. On track it’s very good. No brake fade, oil doesn’t get above 107 degrees, water not above 97. Everything in control despite spending it’s time flat out. Regular oil changes, gear box oil change. Not done many miles a year. Which is why it’s up for sale really. Got out once this year at Donnington for an evening. Just not finding the time. Bad Bits :- It’s showing some surface rust in places. (TADTS) It’s not standard Westfield in any way. Body work, frame and chassis is about it everything else is made, modified or bespoke to the car. Which means I’ll need to tell you a few things about it for you to quickly take things apart. It’s not made as a car for showing off outside McDonalds in. This is a car Darth Vader would drive. It’s a track rat. Contact :- Mark_Wilkes@talk21.com for more info. Car in CV37 area near Stratford Upon Avon I think this should be going for around £11K area. Thanks Mark1 point

I place my deposit for a zetec fw complete kit at stonleigh which I take delivery of in 8 weeks time. Time to get the garage ready. I have had a good read of the build manual but and read some of the build diaries. I now have a number of concerns and questions. The manual seems very vague in a number of areas with a lot things missing. Eg No wiring diagrams, no pictures wire dashboard, no fitting of front wishbones or exhaust. In fact there are to many things to list. Also having read the build diaries most say the manual is only a guide and they rely on the forum for how to over come problems and how to build the car. There also seems to to be a lot of phone calls to Westfield cars about parts missing and build questions. Do Westfield cars not take note of these problems or read the forums,if they did why has the manual not been corrected. They also say you can build the car in 120 hours but most people take twice this amount of time. Has anybody managed to ever managed to build the car using the manual in the stated time. I welcome any comment on my questions and concerns.1 point

Don't worry to much in reality it is a lot less daunting than it first appears, I would recommend getting the old sei build manual if you can find one. This is all i had when I build my first car & found the exploded drawings far better than the photos they use now. Also start a build diary & you will get plenty of help. Andy1 point

I can move between browsers and devices and even if deliberately logged off on one, I can still access another. The key for me is time. I don't know how long (more than ten mins though) but it will time out and I need to login again on all sessions. As noted earlier, I'm content and it's a small price to pay for added security.1 point

When we went, they'd only let one of us down at a time, (foc), but were quite happy for us each to carefully drive in, take a load of photos and drive back out again. Mind you, it's damned hard trying to get photos without people in the way, mine was second car down I think, so bad, but not horrendous, by the time the last car was down for its piccies, I believe Pete had to do a lot of Photoshopping, (which he's ace at), to remove all the people in the back ground. - the crowds just loved it, and so many of them "got it" too.1 point

Trevor from the NW kit FB group is organizing a trip this summer I believe. I've been before in a small (four car) group, and it's great fun when combined with a weekend away playing in Wales! Deffinately go if you get the chance! (And a quiet word in the ear of the gate guard, usually gets the well behaved Sevenesque car owner through the barrier!)1 point

The Injected Wench, Lady Colonial and I went out for a blat today, the first real blat in genuine anger since the upgrade from carbs to throttle bodies. Last Sunday's blat was a test run, but today's blat was a proper thrashing. Leamington to Stratford on Avon via the back routes, lots of opportunities for overtaking, mixed speeds, and a fair amount of blitzing and then posing outside The Dirty Duck near the theatres, then back via a different route on the A34, where there's a 1.5 mile straight road and uphill climb where you can really push the motor. What a difference the throttle bodies have made to the driveability and performance - the car is transformed. Power is instant and progressive, cruising at low revs effortless without dramas or kangarooing, smooth idling - it's like driving a totally different car. Temperatures held steady even in traffic. I was blessed with plenty of overtaking opportunities, simple gear down and whoosh, off we went. I've put 40 miles on a full tank and the fuel gauge has barely moved as well. A flawless, wonderful blat. I am so pleased and happy with my girl once again, and she feels like she's enjoying herself again as well. I'm a very, very lucky man. When I was on committee, I frequently told members they could make a difference, something many people go through life without accomplishing. @Kit Car Electronics, @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary, @bunje, @Chris King - Webmaster and Joint North East AO, @Northampton Motorsport - you made a big difference to me - THANK YOU.1 point

Good turn out today, 10 Westfields, 2 lotus Elise and a Supra, also had Bugman coming along with his option list to fill out and a potential new owner coming to see what we're all about. The weather was good to us for a run up to the Carding Shed, then Richard led us on a tour of the twisty bits. Also good to see people coming from further afield, that's what decent weather and the temptation of a full English does.1 point

Well, that was a really good day Good weather, good people, good fun - thanks all! Congrats to Dave Cleaver for a mega time and his first FTD! A great battle between Matt and Terry brewed all day and went down to the last run. Everyone appears to be going away in one piece with no major car issues. Time to sort out some videos... Edit: Done!1 point

Ring first, organise and go as a club and we got 10 cars and occupants in for free and drove down through the village for photos by the iconic landmark buildings. Only draw back was a coach load of OAP women that wanted to sit in the cars for photos, took several of us to lift them out again! Great fun and good sports.1 point
