  3. Everyone has to make the choices they're comfortable with. A very high percentage of all Westfields have standard, unbraced and largely cosmetic "roll bars", I myself have an RAC bar, now sat in the shed, it has been replaced by an unbraced standard bar. I don't use the car for track days or competition, in the days I did, (pre MSA bar) I had the RAC bar. Now a working hood is more benefit. If I didn't have a working hood and weather gear I might as well get rid of the car, it wouldn't suit how I wish to use it. I do fully respect though that everyone has to draw their own line of what they feel comfortable with, for how they wish to use their car. Too often in the past, people have flamed those making different decisions to their own when it come to such things, and too often in the past it's put one set of club members or another off using places like the Boardroom. Different folks want different things from their car and to use it in different ways for heavy track use, I'd recommend a cage for a bit of both road and track, then an MSA bar, for a pure road car, go with what suits you and what you're comfortable with.

  5. Morning all, My Fisher Fury is up for sale. Cracking little car that is mechanically sorted. I bought it as a stop-gap for summer while I'm doing a scratch build, and it's proven to be fast and reliable. Currently not MOTd but was IVAd in 2005 so has a V5 and has been on the road before. I have all the bits with it, just needs headlight switch wiring in (headlights are in, wiring is done), fog light fitting, speedo fitting, mirrors fitting and away you go. Being 100% honest, might need someone 'friendly' to get it through emissions test but no biggie. Spec as follows: - 919 blade engine with stick shift / push-pull cable on the right (much more natural than it sounds!) - Shift lights around the rev counter - Baffled / billet sump (top gauge on video below is oil pressure - holds 5bar even at ~1.4g) - Fresh Fuchs Pro4 fully synth 15w50 oil and filter - Clutch pedal ratio modified to give a much more forgiving bite point (easier to pull away and smoother downshifts) - Brake pedal modified (larger) and covered in griptape - Bailey Morris prop (modified by NorthWest Propshafts) - Live axle (much lighter than independent) - Helical LSD with 3.54 ratio, gives top end of around 125mph, which it will just about do thanks to much better aero than a Se7en type car - Compomotive CXR wheels with almost new A048Rs, 185/13 front and 205/13 rear - GRP seats with adjustable drivers headrest. Both are bolted into the floor pan but driver's side has two positions for shorter / taller drivers. Pedals are fully adjustable to get comfy. - Front wishbones are rose jointed, so fully adjustable caster (although I would leave it as-is, drives well) - Full 4 wheel alignment recently and corner weighted for 80kg driver - car only is 460kg - Decent sized fuel tank, did a full track day on one tank, no fuel surge as the float chambers in the carbs take care of that - Momo suede wheel (nice and fresh, not old and crusty) - Decent quality 4 point turnbuckle harnesses on both sides - Full cage with additional hoop above driver's head. I'm about 5ft 9 for reference. - 4 pot brakes all round (Wilwood front, HiSpec rear) with bias bar and adjustable brake bias in cockpit. Brakes are fantastic, no fade. - Go kart calipers and modified MX-5 lever for handbrake. Light, neat, simple, works perfectly. - Avo 2.25" dampers - Custom front splitter - Undertray under engine bay to help with aero - Custom fitted lined car cover Also have a spare 919 engine with what looks to be a reconditioned head that can go for £500 with the car if wanted. Bad bits: Weird paintjob, panhard rod mount on chassis has been rewelded by someone recently and not re-painted yet, the odd gelcoat crack and dodgy headlight covers as is normal for these, but it's all very functional. Wiring behind the dash is a tangled mess, but is labelled up and works fine. At the moment I only have the two pics from a track day the other week, but can get more if anyone is interested. Price: £4600 if it goes as is, £4900 if I get it MOTd for you (unfortunately running 2 businesses means I don't have much spare time!) As you can see this is a really quick little car with an awesome soundtrack - you won't find a quicker road-legal BEC for much cheaper than this! Car is near Preston, Lancashire.   8. Its an optical illusion as the mudguards are massive...! Edit to add: I genuinely think it is an optical illusion (though not necessarily caused by the comically large cycle wings). I was concerned that it was a fail so checked at the time and was told that it was definitely fine.

  9. I like binary thinking (well, I would...). If the road isn't officially closed, then it's open. Do I have right of way? Yes or no is the answer. If I do then I will proceed. If I don't then I will give way. What could be simpler? I love cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users, right up until the point they abuse their position by assuming the car driver is always in the wrong. We've all seen it; pedestrians (I call them meanderthals) ambling across the road 10 meters from a zebra/pelican who, when confronted by a car driver going about his legal business come over all self righteous. Listen pal, I'm not driving on the pavement, you're walking in the road... And then there's cyclists who routinely jump red lights or jump on the pavement to "legally" avoid the red (I'm a Londoner and a former motorcycle despatch rider so I see this dozens of times a day and have seen it thousands upon thousands of times) who seem to think that when they get in to difficulty after jumping a red light or nearly mowing down a load of peds that it's someone elses fault. And then there's peds on Zebra crossings. They must wait for traffic to stop. Traffic is not obliged to stop until the pedestrian has entered (put a foot on) the crossing. Stepping off into the flow of traffic forcing the driver the slam on the anchors is poor form and shows an ignorance of the rules. And with the exception of Toucan crossings, the rest of the crossing types are for PEDESTRIANS (and equines if you're in the country) and those people using wheeled aids to get about. Cyclists have no right of way on a crossing if they are on the cycle.   13. Really really good run... lots of control to not drive completely flat out... early braking, no chance of going outside the track on the last corner... But still beat TT - did exactly the job you needed to

Just to throw an idea in (flame-proof or not !!) - I also didn't want the expense or tbh the "odd" look of a tall MSA type roll bar on what would always be a road car (to me anyway - and I'm not especially tall and my seats aren't on runners so even with a standard roll bar the top of my head doesn't protrude) - but then I'm an engineer at heart and the chocolate teapot standard roll bar is really stretching the word "roll bar" if you look at the single bolt at either end that holds it to the chassis and the leverage that would be applied in the event of a roll over So I got some thick wall steel tubing (to roll bar standard but not as thick as the main tube) and some proper mounting brackets from OMP and had a good welder friend weld them on for me. Add in some rose joints and drilled bottom mounting holes and job done - fully braced standard height roll bar that will hopefully provide a little more structural integrity than the bog standard one. By the way, when you look at the bottom mounting points on the rear chassis for the roll bar struts (any roll bar) then quite honestly (imho), you could make the roll bar out of reinforced titanium - the chassis mounting brackets are going to sheer off long before any bar is going to crumble ..........

  24. And as for the "it's your right to have a degree" and "there can be no losers"... That's all a load of Captain Pugwash... Degrees used to be how we identified the brightest (academically) now that everybody has gotten them, how do we spot the next rocket scientists. It's happening everywhere, even to NASA who seem now to be employing dumb asses with degrees... I can't believe my Gold Standard of Engineer (side burns, pipe, vest, slide rule and a pocket full of pencils) would have allowed a team to mix up imperial and metric units and therefore stuff a $100 million satellite into Mars. When I were a kid, an 'A' at GCSE was a big thing. Now so many of our special little darlings are getting A's that we now seem to have an A*. I guess the education authority doesn't have the funds to fight all the emotional trauma cases where Benjemamima only got a B Wow... I really am bitter old sod, obviously with no kids and who is angry at facing the future prospect of having to take a taxi to the old peoples home...

  25. Robin had arrived in his brand spanking new Alfa, which he proudly showed off to us, and quite rightly so, it was lovely. Allan I showed us his very original Westfield, now that would have sat nicely at the front of the parade lap at Silverstone, it is an untouched example, a classic. We left the show in sunshine and went back through the Peak District on much drier roads. It has been a great day and thank you to everyone for coming. Next weekend it is the Curborough Breakfast meet on Saturday and The Horsepower at the Hall on Sunday BUT we are away on holiday so you will have to go without us, have a great time. I am off to pack, I only booked it this morning and we go tomorrow. The last 3 holiday's have been in the Westfield so I am having a 'packing fest' tonight. I can pack more than one pair of shoe's yippee, all this space, yippee.

  26. It was dry until 10.30 am, and then to use Trevor's words 'the heavens opened' it was too late to cancel so we ran in the garage and put the roof on. Thankfully Alan and Trevor still turned up and we had a nice fish and chip lunch in the Wheatsheaf. Hoods are on The rain had almost stopped by 1.30pm so we took the roof's off and headed through the Peak District to The Oil Can Cafe on some great twisty, wet roads. We called at The Flouch where 5 Westfield's were waiting for us - Barry and Andrew, John (but no Jackie, uh, missing you xx), Marcus and son, Allan I and wife, Graham Diggsy. What a cracking turn out! The must have known our Alan was coming as they had his old cycle on display We did a tour of the Carding Shed first as it was Alan and Trevors first visit there. Table anyone? Dresses for the ladies The real reason we went inside first, I mean ROLO cake, come on, how can you refuse? Retro tandems for Glen Then we went outside.......

  27. The real trouble is there are huge resources thrown at the "thick tw*ts" to try and make them less "thick" generally with little of no benefit, if that same resource was thrown at the average kid we as a country would benefit to a far greater extent.

  29. It's a great circuit Russ, but if camping beware the strong winds! Camped two nights there last weekend, and Saturday night was horrendous.. must admit we dont have the strongest of tents, but the score was Anglesey wind 1, sleep 0
