  1. Try a full power air rifle without a pellet. The blast of air instantly and literally vaporizes the slug. So its actually quite humane and no mess to tidy up. Mind you, folk standing down wind who are faintly anointed with "Eau de Slug" tend to have a slightly negative view...

  4. Full Suspension setup AND professional driver instruction. (shameless plug for AdamR and Clear Motorsport) By far the best value improvement in 'spritely' progress on road & track. Then start on the Westfield - next being good gear ratios to optimise engine characteristics as others have said.

  6. The Eastern leg of the Coast to Coast went very well, much better than the rained off West leg the day before. The day started well with Richard, Marcus and new boy Simon, in his newly built and registered FW, meeting at my house for a run down the back way to the Fox and Grapes for a 10:30 start. It started to rain as we set off, but had stopped before we got to the pub, where Geoffrey and Frank were waiting for us. Craig and his mate soon arrived and Chris turned up just before we were to set off. But then Marcus got a text from Terry, "I'll be there at 10:45, wait for me." We did, and set off about 11:00. We headed down the A64 towards the York Ring Road, but first the obligatory stop, Geoff for fuel, the rest for a wee. I had intended to go the A19 up to Thirsk and up Sutton Bank, but doing a trial run on Friday, I missed the turn off but found a road to Helmsley at the next roundabout, it turned out to be a better road taking us through a few small villages and on to Helmsley. It was then on to the A170 and on to Kirby Moorside and Pickering. Heading over the North Yorkshire Moors, the weather started to close in a little, the road was damp with a bit of spray, but no rain, although it did get a bit cold. Before we got to the Blue Bank and into Sleights, we could see Whitby bathed in sunshine, well it looked brighter over the Abbey. So a steady drive through the town, over the bridge and up to the Abbey car park where we were met by Rob, waiting patiently by the roadside. A hours parking paid for, and a walk down to the town for Fish and Chips, after a visit to the toilet. After probably the most expensive Fish and Chips I've not sat down to eat we were off again. A quick top up and down the coastal road to Scarborough. We got behind a couple of cars taking it steady, so I had chance to see the 8 Westfields snaking behind me, it did look good. Straight through Scarborough along Marine Drive and the Seafront, some admiring glances and lots of people taking photos, must start charging, and on to Filey. I was tempted to go around Olivers Mount, but thought it was hard enough trying to keep 9 cars together on the road so what would it be like on a race track! We did loose Frank here, but I knew he was going. On to Filey, a small town that closes at 6:00 (I'm not joking) where we parked on The Brigg for a photo opportunity. We tried to get the Nissan in the distance to move, he was spoiling our shot, but no matter how much Geoff asked him, he wouldn't budge. It was now 4:00, so after another toilet visit we made our way home, Geoff left us and we carried on to Bridlington and along the A166 to Stamford Bridge. Now this is when I started to get a bit panicky. My oil pressure started to drop, down to 20psi at 50mph and nearly zero as we went down Garrowby Hill. The engine felt and sounded good, So I decided to carry on. Hitting the A64, and we all went our separate ways. I carried on with Simon behind me and pulled off the A64 at Tadcaster and home. I found my oil problem, no oil. I've had a leak from the rocker cover gasket for a while, but must have got worse over the days run. I made a new gasket tonight, think I got it sealed, just need some oil now. A big thanks to Richard, Marcus, Simon, Frank, Geoffrey, Craig, Chris, and Terry and Caroline.

  8. Thanks Julie. I'm looking forward to seeing how the tandem turns out, it looks like it will be a beautiful bike again. I'm still in planning mode, and I think I really will have to do some other projects before I get started on this. I've been doing a little bit of investigation into the history of bikes from the early 1900's, following through on some of the links which have been posted on this thread. Surprising the amount of information which has been published and available on the internet.

  11. What a great event! We got to do the International Circuit in the end too - going round the banking was a great experience. One other Westfield, and I counted 7 or 8 seven-type cars which was nice. The car exceeded my expectations and the new R888R's were sensational

  12. *Applause* I have one living in my "I.T area". I keep it fed and watered and in return it keeps the women and flies away from my gear. I just hope it's a male 'cos if not chances are I'm gonna have a lot more of the little beggars running around...

  13. OK, who's for making it North Weald this time? Anyone know what time things are happening there? It would make a change, as lovely as The Lodge is.

  23. Bit of a bump... but I was back at MaX5 this weekend for one race, sharing my old car with the new owner. This meant I didn't get to do a qualifying session and would start at the back... Made for a bl**** fun race though! Seems that a couple of extra years of experience pays off - now around 2s faster than last time I drove this car on this circuit, in exactly the same spec...

  25. Yeah, I do try and stop him eating them. (I usually know when he's been catching and eating moths though, from the unmistakeable cat vomiting sounds)

  26. My daughter's cat ate a spider and went catatonic (!) for a while then projectile vomited herself across the kitchen floor. Five minutes later she waltzed off none the worse!

  27. I hate spiders. Not pathologically, or hysterically or anything, they just creep me out; I send the cat after them these days, he loves spiders, can play with them for ages. Those does get bored once all the legs have fallen off them.

  28. For peace of mind of all the competitors (at least mine)... Would you be so kind to explain how will it work and how calculations will be applied beforehand? Some regs are still a mystery for me... And the new venue one is one of those.

  31. Can't wait to fit my BGH E6 now! After that I'll vote on it with the rest of my upgrades (new engine, widetrack, tyres, better induction, geo, proper mapping, carbon bits, qr wheel, trackday instruction) that I've done since last year.

  32. 100% agree!! First the driver... A standard westy... Even with a s***ty gearbox is a great fast machine if the set up is correct and is driven properly... Generally the car is well above the driver skills and this is one of the many things I've learnt after one year having advices from the correct person. Same recommendation than Dave. First improvement in your kit... Call to Adam to set the car and learn to drive it!

  33. Another vote for Halfords professional range lifetime guarantee. And they can take a fair bit of abuse

  34. I agree totally Dave, but as you say it's an unfortunate fact that so many owners spend fortunes on engines etc, when a relatively inexpensive geo set-up transforms the car and the way it drives.

  36. Progress often seems to be one step forward, fifteen back. My own total lack of knowledge of vehicle wiring doesn't help here so I've appealed to an old friend to come and rescue me. He's a time served auto electrician (handy) and can probably help me finish the wiring with no more than a custard cream and a cup of tea. Mind you, the wipers are now working. Previously only one speed was connected. Following the installation of a new 2 speed switch and a little help from the Car Builder Solutions catalogue which carries a wiring diagram for the Lucas wiper motor, I made it function as intended. At the insistence of Graham (as above) I stripped and re-greased the spindle boxes then turned them over for a better fit on the scuttle. This helped with the angle that the spindles have with the screen too so better operation is in order! Having accidentally blown a fuse today (dropped the indicator/high beam lever on the stainless side panels) and not having any old style glass fuses, I was prompted to put the new blade style fuse box in. This of course involved more work than intended and ultimately meant the battery had to be turned through 180 degrees to aid cable reach. It's an improvement all round though. On the basis of making one thing at a time work, this is progress for me. Graham has promised to visit and help sort out the issues and even said the scary words 'let's make a new loom' so hold tight, more coming.
