Nick makes a huge point re Blatters (equally valid stay at the pub option); for various reasons I've not been able to stay over at any of the club events for a few years, and that was fine, no problem. But this summer, I have been able to, and have tried to take advantage of that as often as possible. The point is, I'd forgotten just how much you miss out on, not being able to stay as part of the camping over group. From staggering about somewhat the worse for ware in fields to sat round a cooling bbq with nothing but starlight and the embers to see by, putting the world to rights with a bunch of friends.2 points

I saw BBC news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-37057569 The article mentions Melanoma UK warning of skin cancer risk even through glass windscreens and it made me wonder how often I should apply the suncream on long sunny runs in the westie. Many years ago while cycling in the French Alps I had applied suncream on a very sunny day but forgot the back of my ears, which got burnt, so now that's the first place that gets the suncream. Does anyone know of a hat that will stay on in a westie at speed?1 point

Yes I ignored depreciation because I never buy anything with en eye on what it might be worth when I am done with it so my numbers were wrong and favoured the buy a camper option. Never felt we missed out on the banter TBH. All the SS folks are top boys and girls and we would rock up and join in as you would expect. Staying at an off-site does mean leaving at some point. For me that was the non-monetary price of staying at a nice gaff. The plus was that Blatgirl was with me (actually competing and annoyingly winning more pots than me, but that's another story...). And all the previous points notwithstanding it seems to me like buying a camper is something you really want to do and that is probably the most important consideration of all. Logic often takes a back seat to desire and lets be fair, we have Westfields for toys so we're pretty good at ignoring the logic of a situation when desire kicks in Get the camper and get out there1 point

Having said that Kev we had two turbo busas with us around the Alps this year. 2400 miles in under 10 days and they didn't seem to suffer.1 point

There may have been a fault with the sender, but it may just have been someone adjusting the float - "out of the box", they don't always read full/empty that well and in a few instances, need a bit of bending/shortening etc to improve things. That said, they're more of a rough indication at best anyway, rather than an absolute statement of fact! That coupled with the fact that the fuel can surge a bit in the bends when driving hard, means that many of us try to refill when it gets down to 1/4 to a 1/3 of a tank or so anyway!1 point

Thank you to everyone for the advice. After a lot of fiddling with the send unit I managed to get it out the hole. I then fished around with the magnetic widget and after a minute out came the part. Woohoo. I'll replace everything and see if the reading is correct but I'm assuming it won't be as why else would someone have tried to unscrew the unit in the first place if there wasn't a problem! I will also mark the 'long' screw so I or anyone else will know in future not to remove it fully. Pictures of Roary will be coming soon. The wheels had taken a bit of a battering so I've ordered new ones ... once on I'll put some pictures and sort out a profile pic :-) Thanks again and I'm sure I'll be bugging you again soon.1 point

Ah, so doing much the same as Scott when I was a kid, though it was my Grandad rather than Dad when I was little, I'm not seeing any pattern here at all...1 point

Yes, BUT disconnect or isolate the battery first to prevent any unwanted electrical sparks. Can't remember how big the opening is, but if it's big enough and there are no cuts on your hands, and if was me doing it and could see it, I'd probably stick my hand in the tank and grab the loose bit, then throughly wash my hand afterwards, of course. When I was a kid and helping my dad work on cars, lawn motors, snow blowers, etc oily parts used to get cleaned by soaking them in a huge coffee can full of old petrol. I spent days and days soaked in the stuff and cleaning the parts with an old toothbrush, and it never did me any harm, apart from being ugly, overweight, asthmatic, daft, and a few other ailments...but you can't prove the petrol did it.1 point

If you are depending on your wife you need to understand her needs. A toilet is a given for mine and as I could not find what I wanted at a sensible price I built mine on a 2 year Iveco van. Had it now 10 years and been everywhere with it. Has shower etc. If you want to buy anything, VW are way over priced as they have the "herd" mentality where they have become a style statement. I would look at a van conversion, Ducato which for an older one you might get one or a Transit. Here is the big question, do you actually need it? For what it will cost if you only do 4 or 5 trips go in a hotel.1 point

Well, so long as you're tanks not brimmed, and you're working outside, and you're not smoking at the time, I'd try it for 30 seconds or so. It might save you disturbing all the fuel line joints at the bottom of the tank. You just need to get it up so you can grab it and try to re-locate the long bolt.1 point

What a fantastic past few hours. I met with Neptune who has travelled up for tomorrows run. We met on the sea front and had coffees and the cars were the centre of attention. From here we went for a pose through Scarborough with more pictures and various comments shouted at us...all good ones. Up to Olivers Mount for a drive round the hill climb and motorcycle circuit. Next it was down to the mere where we watched about 50 swans all feeding. Water was so calm and the most beautiful blue. Back down the sea front for lemon top ice-creams and the cars caused a lot of interest when parked up. Then we parked on the harbour. Again loads of interest in the cars. One woman of around 70 got in Buttercup behind the wheel. She had the harness on, my glasses and my hat. I even got a kiss from here at the end. . We have had children sat in the cars, families asking us questions and loads of pictures. Weather is really sunny, sky and sea are blue and great company.....what is better than that.1 point
