  1. Yorkshire 8, Day 2, North. Done. The second day and we had three returning cars, Me, Roger and Judy and Michael. We were joined by Marcus and Chris at the Fox and Grapes for a 10:30 start. We headed out towards York, then on to Thirsk along the A19, after a quick stop at Tesco, I saw that Sutton bank was closed. That was my intended route, so following the alternate caravan route we went up Wass Bank, only to be met by a group of tractors, classic and new all parked up on the grass verge. From there we went on to Helmsley, found a car park and went for the biggest Fishcake Sandwich I've seen. Lunch over and after a discussion we moved on to Thornton le-Dale and the Motor Museum and Classic car Auction, which is really an old garage full of all the old stuff your Dad threw away. Lots of cars, trucks and bikes were ready for auction later this month. I tried to get a group or car club discount, but they weren't having any of it, so we paid the full £1 each entry fee. It was now time for a fuel stop, so headed to Malton, where we got a bit muddled and nearly lost each other. Regrouping in a car park, SatNavs set for Stamford Bridge and a nice run down the back roads, only to be slowed by a Skoda indicating right with no right turn coming, then switching to left about a mile from the left turn it almost stopped to take. After passing it we stopped in the car park just by the bridge, Michael tried Marcus' top on then it was time for home. That's it. Two days, around 320 miles,15 cars, 20 people , 3 cars and 4 people doing both days. Not a bad weekend Don't you think? A big thank you to Richard for helping me to plan Saturdays route and for leading it, Julie for recommending the pub and to all who came along. Thank You. Fancy doing it again sometime?

  2. Well at the fourth attempt I now have a car with a running engine! Attempt 1 - Wires to fuel pump not connected! Attempt 2 - No power to ECU - Forgot one connection! Attempt 3 - Battery needs charging Attempt 4 - Success! It feels like a massive milestone being a complete novice in this area. Looking forward to escaping my single garage and finishing the build in the sunshine! Simon.

  4. Absolutely brilliant run with a great bunch of guys. Don't think I've ever seen that many Westies, Caterhams, Zeros, Tigers etc. at Glenshee before. I covered over 300 miles over the course of the day and it must make our south of the border chums green with envy that we're lucky enough to have fast, quiet roads like that - and it was mostly dry too. Even the police motorbikers gave us a wave!

  7. Yes just take your sat navigation on top of the transmission tunnel. If you are only doing 30mph there is plenty of time to look at it. Also you can just check the revs per 1000rpm and work out the revs to make 30mph ,easy to check then. Cheers

  10. Hello. I had a similar problem with my VDO speedometer. I had the speed sensor moved from the propshaft area to the front wheel and it now works spot on.

  11. These 'Curborough Breakfast Club' meeting started last year and have been well attended but as I mentioned earlier this one wasn't as good as some of the breakfast meets last year. However, unlike any pub or cafe meeting there is the added element of competition cars and driving so I think it is a good place to meet but it may need some good publicity via word of mouth or forums etc to build it up. Obviously work often gets in the way so not everyone can get to every event but any car meet is only as good as the cars and people that turn up so I will continue to support this event in future and try to encourage as many as possible to attend. Hope to see you next time

  12. Yea I was one of the Westfields - Never been before so didn't know what to expect, sprint was fun to watch plus a walk around the paddock - plus a top bacon sandwich Have to admit that I thought the majority of the cars there were spectators and not those turning up for the 'Breakfast Meet' - I also got the feeling that the breakfast was a draw with passing trade, with a few bikers and even a scrap collector turning up ..

  13. Used many types... Dixons/Adidas best so far But definitely will go for photochromic / transitional lenses for next pair, so no faffing when heading out in bright sun then heading back in dusk or dark.

  14. It will leak all over, be prepared. But the upside is it keeps the rust at bay. You dont need to know the amount really, just fill slowly to the bottom or the hole then fit bolt in tight. The box as said will chuck most of the oil out so check it often if driven hard otherwise once a year should be ok. Be aware the oil when leaking can get on the threads of the input and output shafts causing the large nut holding the prop flange on to loosen. To fix this remove said nut only if loose, degrease thoroughly, apply a good threadlock and tighten to whatever the required torque is, i cant remember now.. Dont overtighten.. You can damage a bronze washer. Use threadlock again on the 4 prop bolts.. You dont want to crawl under there often.

  19. Or is it… About a year ago I posted on this thread that I was hoping to have my car completed and running in time for the 50th Anniversary of that first race, and I’m sure many of you may now be wondering if I managed it or not. Well, in short the answer is no, but I’m now not too far off from my goal and things have moved forward and in quite an unexpected way since February 2013 when I bought my first JW4. In the last 3 years I’ve spoken with and met some quite amazing people each with a unique storey to tell and something to give. My search for parts has taken me as far north in the UK as Blackburn and to the West into Cornwall, and what started with one car became three and is now two. The correspondences have been worldwide, with owners past and present in Canada, America, Belgium, Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands all getting in touch. I’ve gone from a car which I knew nothing about that once raced in an almost forgotten Formula to unwittingly becoming the authority for the Johnny Walker JW4 in the UK. The garage is now stacked full of spare parts waiting to be reunited with cars and the rafters are filled with tooling and body moulds; even the house hasn’t escaped, the once empty bookshelves are now filled with a diverse collection of books, period magazines, newspapers and of course drawings. Whilst I may have not yet achieved my goal of having a running car for the 50th Anniversary, this will not stop me celebrating this occasion in some modest style; I am therefore pleased to be able to report that on the Bank holiday Weekend of 29th/30th May my car will be on display at Crystal Palace for Motorsport at the Palace featuring with it a small exhibition on F4, Johnny Walker and the JW4. http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/ For anyone attending the event, please do come and say hello, pick up a free post card and whist there learn a little bit more about Formula Four racing in the 1960’s.

  21. I've got some of this stuff looks like you can brush or spray on, I think I'll brush on so I can do it whilst on the car without it spraying everywhere!
