  1. I built the kit pretty much as Westfield standard using the completion kit and used the donor dash etc. Bought some nicer wheels and that was about it. Built for road use, gentle cruise to the pub for lunch with SWMBO etc....then I met Smokey, Dommo and Gary - bad people who led me astray. Still a fair bit of road use, but airfield track days are now the main use and where I have the most fun. Which is also why I'll be giving you a call and waiting for a nice day to drive from Wiltshire to Cheshire.... Always wanted to build my own car, loved the 7 in the titles of 'The Prisoner' and got the idea for building a Westfield from 'A Race Car is Born'. On checking out options and realising my brother had an early Mk1 MX5 1600 that had been loved to death but was about to fail its MoT on bodywork, the Mazda SDV became the obvious option. Including IVA, cost of donor, sale of recovered spares from the donor, some tools and registration, I got mine on the road for around £11,300. Since upgraded with MSA chrome roll bar, Westfield 4-1 Manifold, Odyssey battery, Toyo R1R tyres and an AA Composites Boot box. Next up...optimised head...

  2. Meet at 10.30am The Wheatsheaf, Baslow. A repeat of last years great route along the Peak District B roads, aiming to finish at Ashbourne mid afternoon. Last year we managed a photo shoot outside Tissington Hall, good news for anyone needing pictures for the 2016 calendar. All welcome. The weather forecast? I have got no idea, it's going to be sunny until some miserable meteorologist tells me different. So, providing it's not tipping it down, who is coming?

  6. Mine was a 2009 build so prices may have changed slightly since then but my total build cost up to SVA and excluding test fees was £14,500. That included £1200 for an MX5 heaven pallet donor, the 10% premium for the chrome pack and a full set of weather gear. I also built using new OEM brake calipers rather than refurbishing and with smiths Telemetrix gauges and prosport F1 tacho as oposed to the MX5 instruments. Spec is as you know bias towards touring with fully carpeted interior sport seats and a heated screen.

  7. Too much!!! Probably about £13k excluding the engine rebuild and head work but including tools etc. I did install my omex/custom loom during the build so that's probably a £1k worth of "upgrades" at the build stage. Spec is as you saw Fraser Road and track. I'm "hearing" of more mazda cars being used on track these days Interested to hear what the project is

  8. In short, I bought a donor for £400, sold £200 worth of parts from it. In total my build will cost near £14.5k including IVA, which sounds a lot for a Mazda SDV but my spec over standard or added costs are: Detachable arches New pads and discs all round, one new caliper New gen Mazda water pump, cambelt, oil seals everywhere, tensioner etc New gen Mazda front ball joints (£80!) Rebuilt diff with Kaaz LSD (£600ish total) Megasquirt PNP ECU + innovate wideband from yourselves Protechs from yourselves Escort 2.4 quick rack GSXR750 throttle bodies and DanST inlet manifold Tiller B6's, one runner Westfield non-cat carbon silencer TTV Racing flywheel, new clutch Westfield upgrade manifold Playskool MSA bar And I plan to buy a set of Pro Race 1.2 in 13" with R888R or similar but I've factored that in my budget. I plan to use the car for road, sprinting and track days and I chose a 7 type kit (ZK) because I love the look of them and Westfield because I like that you build nearly all of the car but without any welding (can MIG ok but don't want to) after coming from years of quite heavily modifying performance hatchbacks and that the finished product if done well can be of great quality. Also, it may seem a touch backwards but I wanted ITB's first as coming from turbocharged cars I've never had them before so it was on the "must have" list for me. Same reason its orange lol. The plan is to upgrade to your head and cam package after I've got some sprints under my belt and eventually to build a 1600 screamer!

  9. Ooooo... Is this for the sponsorship deal you're about to offer me, providing without cost a high spec Mazda based BLiNKsprint weapon for the Speed Series in 2016 Perhaps owners may prefer to PM top secret budget in confidence - just in case of SWMBOs finding out the reality!

  10. Another very positive interaction with the parts dept at Westfield. Not only did they take my call dead on 5pm on a Friday, but they managed to get a couple of non-stock items posted out to me within 4 working days. Thanks in particular to Gavin for sorting things...
