For anyone with even a general interest the Sprint School is well worth attending just so that you get an idea of what it is about. Sprints & Hillclimbs are one of the easiest forms of Motorsport to get into and having a Westie makes it even easier as they are a great car for it. Having read some of the comments I thought I would try and explain what I find so enjoyable about it as so many people think we are nuts spending all that money to have so little track time. Having previously raced and done loads of miles doing trackdays I really enjoy the purity of Sprinting despite what has been said about always being at 100% when racing you can still make a mistake and generally recover from it. But not Sprinting & HIllclimbing the tiniest of mistakes will give you a longer time and can therefore potentially instantly drop you a place or two behind your competitors. You have to be 100% on it right from the start and this is with cold tyres and brakes which means that on a double lapper you can brake later and go faster round the same corner the second time round, difficult to judge exactly right but a brilliant feeling when you do. The aim is the Perfect Qualifying Lap and you only have to watch Quali 3 of F1 to know how exciting that can get. So do you always get it 100% right, nope you don't but when you do the feeling is fantastic especially when you just drop the perfect time in and beat your competitors. Remembering you have normally only got 4 to 5 runs in the day to do this.2 points

How wonderfully magnanimous of them to do you such an enormous favour.....or is that better described as 'doing their job properly'? Been following your travails and it's great to see some sensible progress at last. Looks as if your application has been routed through every single obstacle someone could make up.... I can understand having to apply a new VIN if the old one isn't up to standard - had to do that a few years back when I put a car though SVA, the VIN was as old as the chassis and pre-dated the new regs. Also had to do that many moons ago when building a fake snake that didn't have a VIN from the 'factory'. I made one up and I swear, it was pure coincidence but it happened to be the same number sequence as the original Cobras. I used my initials and an X, then some random numbers.....oddly, exactly what Carol Shelby had done it turned out....I was very embarrassed when I found that out. ...but, being told to replace a perfectly valid, current, factory applied VIN? - plonkers. Well done...deep breath and relax!! Nearly there......2 points

Once again, what's a fantastic weekend. I had a great time, worth the effort of making it back for. Big thanks to all involved in making it happen. The Saturday run out was great, the coast road from applecross to shieldag is awesome I think my run home on Sunday was good to, didn't get to wet just an odd shower and mostly clear roads for a good blat home. Here is a link to the rest of the few photos I got, http://s1196.photobucket.com/user/WestieKev/library/Applecross%2020152 points

Having watched a friend of mine compete in his MR2 in the Toyota Sprint Series, it didn’t take much persuasion for me to enter a round of the Javelin Sprint Series. Both series are operated by Javelin and run simultaneously through the day using the same circuit, timing equipment etc. The Javelin series is open to all marques and runs a fairly loose class structure accordingly – on the same day there was everything from a Yaris Hybrid to an Ultima GTR! This round was at RAF Woodbridge, with a very technical layout paired with lots of ‘interesting’ surface changes. Having done a handful of trackdays this was my first timed/competitive event, and to be honest I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that I was in a class of three – me, a track-prepped Caterham running a 160 VVC k-series, and another Westfield – which turned out to be Steve Hope in his 3.0 V6 Duratec-powered SEiW. Gulp. After a couple of sighting laps and an untimed practice run I was still struggling to piece together the twisty circuit in my mind – my first time was 1:52.8. A couple more runs and I was starting to get more confidence in the car and getting a feel for the lines, but I was struggling massively with heel-and-toeing – frustrating, as this is normally second nature for me. I think I need to reconfigure the pedal setup a tad (or buy myself some new feet!). After a few runs with frustrating mistakes, including a *small* spin at the end of the back-straight, my times started falling. I finally got down to 1:47.2 on my first run after lunch, which I was happy with, but felt I still hadn’t had a good clean run. Naturally, I then fluffed up my next two runs – the first was tidier but slower (more brave needed!) and the second was horrendous – missed braking points, missed gears, terrible lines, the works. I was pretty frustrated with myself. When finally I lined up for my last run of the day I sat in the queue just thinking to myself “braking, braking, braking.” The start was tidy, and once I made it through the twisty midsection with a clean set of braking points and downchanges I started thinking it could be a good time. I hammered down the final straight and through the final two chicanes and caught a glimpse of the timing board: 1:46.06! I was over the moon, so pleased to have knocked over a second off a time I thought I couldn’t beat. It’s a hell of a rush! A few pics below, I’m hoping for a few more once the sight photographer puts his photos up. It was an excellent day in all – made even better by the fact that I was 2-3 seconds ahead of the Caterham Big congratulations to Steve Hope as well, who not only trounced my times by around 8 seconds (!) but gave the Ultima something to worry about by picking up second fastest overall for the day. I think I need some sticker tyres. And a turbo… And I borrowed my friend’s GoPro for what turned out to be my fastest lap of the morning. It’s pretty messy still, with plenty of sideways and a missed gearchange slowing me down. I promise my later runs were neater!1 point

Great day Gents apart from the early morning shower, we lost the West Yorkshire flag at Stoneleigh and nearly lost it again! it flew off the pole when the wind picked up but luckily wrapped itself around a rather confused person 30 odd yards up the field1 point

Yeah, the lap times they get on control tyres round Oulton, (and other tracks of course) don't half tell a story of what a great all round package they are; and how huge horsepower isn't necessarily needed to set good times. - A good driver and an MX5 is a tricky one to beat, in so many ways.1 point

MX5's are great little cars although I did have a little chuckle at the photo of the car before paint with the Toni and Guy sticker on the bonnet1 point

They were a very highly regarded engine builder in their day and possibly the acknowledged CVH specialist; I'm sure I recall one of our ex-chairmen, Mark Stanton having one of their engines - to great effect, in his old Westfield.1 point

For clarity, the manual says nothing about putting anti-seize compound on it, I'm not suggesting it's compulsory or essential, just suggesting its a wise precaution to simplify future maintenance. I do not accept that adding a touch of anti seize to an assembly of that sort will have an negative impact. I also appreciate that the bearing is a pre lubricated, sealed dual row ball race type with separate inner races, machined to provide correct dimensions when clamped with the correct assembly torque. Please feel free to use whichever method suits you, was just trying to help.1 point
