Well folks, she's finnally arrived! Born last night at 19:03 weighing in at 7lb 2oz after a long and rough labour. To say I'm relieved would be the understatement of the year, so here's to my fourth girl and a blooming big well done to my wife Jenny. :-))))7 points

Woohooo... We have spotted. Yes we are positive... That sounds really bad. Had a great day today with only a couple of showers so roof off all day. We went back to Glenetive this morning where they filmed some of skyfall. We got out of Buttercup and the feeling of overwhelming smallness was unreal. No trees or bushes but only a road between massive, snow topped mountains. It was fantastic and so surreal. From here we went over to Fort William and had a fantastic meal by the well known Scotsman, Ronald McDonald and then onto Ben Nevis. We went on the gondola that takes you up the next but one mountain to Ben Nevis and the views and wind are fantastic. Make sure you wrap up well. Carol had a walk and then disappeared to the cafe and I went up the mountain and climbed to the snow line Really fab place with nice car parking for Buttercup and clean toilets and cafes at the top and bottom of the mountain. From the gondolas we went to Glenfinnan to see the viaduct and memorial. The place nearly brought me to tears as it is the most beautiful place and was totally overwhelmed. From here we headed back to Glencoe and the roads are so flat and smooth and a joy to drive. We have spoken to so many people and had lots of people having their pictures with Buttercup today. Today has been brilliant and tomorrow I am hoping to climb to the hidden valley and then onto Skye for two days before going up north to Durness.6 points

Dropped the ripped seat off for re-covering a week last Thursday, Got an email on Friday, saying it was ready, did I want it sent up, or would I be collecting it. Emailed back on Monday to say I wasn't sure if I could pick it up this week or not, so best send it. A few 'phone calls to pay etc later, and it arrived today. All back where it belongs now: They've made a really good job of it. The whole seat looks like new, it's been completely stripped, re-covered and re-built again. Can't believe how odd it's felt, minus the passenger seat. Thanks to Westfield for sorting everything out with Cobra for me.4 points

OK First thoughts as only just seen this thread,, We seem to be trying to achieve 2 things which on the face of it are mutually exclusive, i.e. appeal to the newbies with a relatively std car and keep the experienced guys happy. Not easy,, There are however several easily identifiable components that usually only turn up on out and out track / race orientated or very well developed track day cars e.g. 1, Exotic dampers, Penski, Olhins, nitron (to a certain extent) etc, exact list would need to be defined 2, Rose jointed suspension, other than the 4 at the rear of a std independent Westfield. 3, Dog and sequential gear boxs 4, Electronic driver aids, flappy paddles, launch control, traction control, flat shift etc 5, Carbon Fibre chassis panelling (not body panels as many road going cars have this for da bling man!) 6, light weight steering racks, i.e. not Mk2 Escort derived. Probably a couple more but can't think of them for now,, All of the above are easily identifiable and thus policeable, is that a word? So, using the above how about (for simplicity I'm only going to use car engine capacity breaks): Class A Road legal up to 1700cc, items 1,2,3,4,5,6 may not be fitted to the car, list 1A or 1B tyres permitted. Novice drivers only as per current definitions Class B Road legal over 1700cc, items 1,2,3,4,5,6 may not be fitted to the car, list 1A or 1B tyres permitted. Novice drivers only as per current definitions Class A1 Road legal up to 1700cc, items 1,2,3,4,5,6 may not be fitted to the car, list 1A or 1B tyres permitted. expert drivers. Class B1 Road legal over 1700cc, items 1,2,3,4,5,6 may not be fitted to the car, list 1A or 1B tyres permitted. Expert drivers Class's A1 and B1 aimed at drivers who become experts through experience but do not want to spend a fortune developing a car. Class C Road Legal up to 1700cc, items 1, 4, 5 and 6 may not be fitted to the car, List 1 B tyres Class D Road Legal over 1700cc, items 1, 4, 5 and 6 may not be fitted to the car, List 1 B tyres From what I can see and have driven there is virtually no difference between a manually shifted sequential dog box and a H pattern dog box. Class E Pretty much what we have now , road going unlimited up to 1700cc, i.e. if its road legal anything goes. Class F Pretty much what we have now , road going unlimited over 1700cc, i.e. if its road legal anything goes. Class G and H leave alone For the record control tyres, no thanks, To summarise my thoughts, this would give a better defined entry level class and put a little more distance between c/d and e/f?? Cheers Barry3 points

Ok after a bit of a faff here's my best run of the weekend, this is my first and only timed complete practice run of 1 min 46s which I'm very chuffed with. This is the short version ( just the complete run ) as my first attempt was red flagged and I got sent back down for this re-run, I'll post the full video later.2 points

Helło Willy, welcome to the club, and thanks for joining! Rab is the Area Organiser for Scotland and arranges lots of runs and events through the year; definitely sign up to his mailing list - his runs take in some scenery and routes that have the rest of us utterly green with envy! If you can, try and get along to the regular meets as well, they're great tyre kicking opportunities, and a chance to find out more about your car and get tips and advice from the others. (Handy for finding out where the Westfield friendly specialists are too!) And don't forget to take full advantage of the Boardroom! Whether Westfield related or not, it seems we can answer most questions! We have a fantastic archive of information relating to our cars, there are also past editions of the Club Magazine that you can download. And lastly, if you just fancy a run out and there's not a regular event organised for that day, don't be afraid to pop a post up on the Boardroom, a few days in advance, asking if anyone else fancies joining you. I did it just last week, and ended up with seven other Westfields, and also had the pleasure of meeting three club members I hadn't met before!2 points

WSCC Speed Series Class discussion. Background: Over the years there have been discussions in the paddock about the classes that run in the WSCC Speed Series with a variety of suggestions being made as to ways that they can be changed etc. The classes are ultimately decided by the Speed Series Organising Team SSOT. But at the last meeting of the SSOT we wanted to get feedback from current drivers and other interested parties to see if we were actually providing what people want. The obvious difficulty with this is that no matter what you do you will never please all of the people all of the time but we felt an open on-line discussion may bring up some new ideas. So that is the idea of this thread to discuss ideas going forward with a view to taking a long term approach and trying to set the classes for say the next 5 years. This has actually been the desire of the SSOT but we have found ourselves having to respond to the changes that other clubs were making to the classes at events that the Speed Series goes to. We also have to respond to any changes made by the MSA. History: It is worth trying to outline a brief history of the Speed Series classes / ethos so that you can see how it has evolved and changes made to the classes. After its formation the classes quite quickly settled into the concept that we run now which is a cc split of 1800cc to allow the then up and coming Zetec 1800cc engine in to the lower classes, whereas most other clubs had 1700cc for the bored crossflows. Then A&B as Novice classes, C&D as the progression classes from novice, but with limited modifications allowed on the cars, E&F as anything goes road going cars and somewhere for the bike engine cars to go. Then G&H for the modified non-roadgoing cars. During this time we initially used 1A tyres in A to D then 1B in E&F, but other clubs started to allow 1B tyres in all road going classes so after resisting this for a while we did the same, a similar situation existed with windscreens. So that all that now really differentiates the classes are gearboxes. However this is partly our own fault as all the other clubs running the events only have 2 or 3 classes for road going kits. Usually a cc split at 1700cc and then maybe a 3rd class for bike engine cars of all cc’s. SSOT Ideas to discuss, but please add your own. · Condense the classes in road going ie merge C&E and D&F · Change to a BHP/Ton class split (lots of problems defining and policing this) · Use a control tyre (cost of changing and making our top competitors uncompetitive) · Leave as it is (perfectly acceptable solution but at least we will have had the debate) · Change the cc split to 1700cc like the rest of the country · Control engine classes ie VX, Duratec, Zetec, 4AGE ( we could end up with a lot of classes and not really achieve anything) · Any significant change to classes will result in changes having to be made to the Target Times / Scoring System. Although the SSOT is considering having a similar debate about that as well depending on how this one goes. So it's over to you guys, nothing is off limits but please debate in a polite way. Hopefully the ideas will bounce around and we will end up with a consensus on the views of current competitors. If needed we may after the debate hold a Poll.1 point

Hi Julie. It would be great next year to have a tribe of us travel up here for a weeks driving or so. I have been coming up for a few years but in a tintop. These past few days with all the rain and b*******ing about I have to say have made this such a fantastic holiday and deciding to bring buttercup even though the forecast was terrible was the best ever. I have learnt a few lessons though. We could travel with less things as people have said but I am pleased with what we have brought on this occasion. A half hood and the clear wind deflectors stop an amazing amount of water. It is amazing what you can stack on a Paul Ash luggage rack. An umbrella is a godsend in a shower with no roof on. That will do for now as going to take pictures of the pink sky. Don't forget next years planned trip. What does OCLO mean?1 point

Definitely agree with this, the more definitely is the merrier. If there was a way to make a handful of events as well attended as the WSCC Blyton weekend I think that would be a really great thing for the speed series, though I'm sure it's not an easy task by any means.1 point

This is a really interesting debate and one I havent had time to contribute to as yet. As a novice and a newbie with 15 sprints/hillclimbs under my belt I dont thing anything needs changing at all. Is there a class for novices? yes Is there a road legal class ? yes Is there BEC and CEC across the board ? yes Can you use slicks if you want ? yes Is it competitive "in class" and "across classes" yes (in the wet at Wiscombe last year the mighty cross flow was competitive) Is it affordable - yes is it fun - yes will i do it again - yes Hold that - Marto has hit the nail on the head...1 point

This is making fantastic reading Geoff and Carol, and that is without the pictures. You are going to have to stay a considerably longer time though to get on all these lovely roads that everyone is talking about. Please keep treating us to your great story. OCLO1 point

Im half way through my second season competing as a novice in class B and can't see much wrong with things the way they are The novice classes have worked fine for me and allowed me to test the water last year as well as stretch my legs a little this year. Motorsport is about development, development of your car and development of your ability and as such I feel our class structure does this well. The on going debate about what is road going I find a little strange particularly as there is no such thing as a STANDARD road going Westfield, if it's MOT'd taxed & Insured it's road going end of ( regardless of how many seats it has or miles it does ). We all start out in our cars ( in whatever state of tune ) with little knowledge of what makes a good sprint / hill climb car and equally little understanding of what makes a competitive driver, it's how we progress from there that make the difference. Modifying your car to be more track orientated is a choice, a choice that will either push you forward in your sport or hold you back but it's your choice, therefore if you want carry on touring but enjoy competing a few times a year thats great and you'll have a great time but you can't expect to be as competitive as those who choose dedicate their car and time to competing. We should keep the novice classes separate from the more experienced guy's to help attract new comers, run regular sprint schools ( if enough interest ) and whenever possible assign an experienced competitor as a mentor for the first few events. My one big issue with the series is the number of events, I feel we have far to many events with far to few WSCC SS entrants. For me the best events are the ones that are well supported by the SS and allow me to compete with my fellow class mates on the day, thats the buzz, thats what competition is all about but with so many events across the country it is entirely possible to go a whole season and not meet a fellow class member, just compete on paper So please please please less events Nick or make a certain number events mandatory for all competitors to attend On the engine size split personally I can't see the point in changing right now, I think dropping from 1800cc to 1700cc now would not benefit anyone, a tuned 1700cc crossflow or Puma is every bit as competitive as an 1800 zetec or K series. As for the rest of the classes I agree with StephenH, I think we have them about right. Next year ( as I'll probably have run out of events to run as a novice again ) I can choose to move to class D with little change or investment in my car and be competitive, not win but have a chance of keeping up with the rest of the class and develop my driving ability. Jump to F and invest in the car again with gearboxes and electronics or dive in the deep end of H with slicks and no more road going restrictions but big investment and no chance of keeping up, the choice is mine. Finally this debate is great, despite my personal opinion above we must look at all options to keep the speed series the envy of the paddocks1 point

My wife said she saw a yellow westie parked in Banavie near Fort William about 5pm today, two people in it described as 'well wrapped up'! Buttercup? By any chance. Hope you are enjoying the sunny evening. As has been said, the drive from Invergarry to Kyle (A87) is great. Another fantastic route is to turn off the A87 onto the A890 to Achnasheen then the A832 to Gairloch, A nice place to visit and includes a section of road described by Top Gear magazine as the greatest drivers road in Britain, through Glen Docherty and alongside Loch Maree. You are spoilt for choice really, enjoy!1 point

I'm sure you read this: I agree in with your dislike of those who wander from their designated lane when others are about. It is a common cause of accidents. This was on an industrial estate perimeter and there wasn't a moving vehicle in sight - only parked lorries beyond a fence. It seemed perverse not to use initiative and drive efficiently. Similarly I do not indicate if there is clearly nobody who would be interested in my doing so because it breaks the habit and requires each event to be analysed separately - I don't drive on auto-pilot if I can avoid it. The examiner said "we expect you to drive as you would expect your candidate to drive with strict adherence to the Highway Code." That being the case why did he not brief me to that effect? I had negotiated other roundabouts on the test drive (about three quarters of an hour) and adhered to the lane markings so he knew damned well that this was part of my driving habit. My mistake was to assume that I was to drive like a competent but experienced driver and not doggedly follow rigid rules, but interpret road conditions and drive accordingly.1 point

For reference, the current set of regs purely on times cars are achieving at well attended events (using Blyton as an example) are an incredibly good spread/progression from novices to unlimited!... A: 69.04 B: 66.70 C: 67.69 D: 65.39 E: 65.83 F: 64.15 G: 65.04 H: 63.521 point

Well done! Congratulations! When I had just become a proud father of a girl, a colleague with two girls said he'd read somewhere that men with higher IQs tend to father more girls than boys. Three years later my son was born.....1 point

Welcome, another old school Ford engine to keep the numbers up! Thankfully this isn't like most forums, so I don't need to give my usual forum advice speech about having a thick skin and ignoring the trolls. Plus these days there are good number of buyers versus builders, so everyone is pretty non-judgemental and welcoming, "the management" do a good job of keeping it a nice place to spend those rainy/cold days.1 point

Many congrats and best wishes! Yep, save for the weddings and get your best stern father look and lectures ready for the boyfriends who will arrive! It's funny how we as fathers react depending whether we have a son or daughter: Father to son: "Yeah, good lad, go get those girls - but use protection!!!" Father to daughter's boyfriend: "Touch my angel and you're dead...or worse!!!"1 point

Discussion with Nick has already taken place but unfortunately MSA require all events to be UK based. Nothing stopping us making it a non-points scoring round. In all honesty the organisation of the actual hill climb was typically french! But the craic surrounding the whole event and fours days of fun and entertainment more than made up for it. Real shame the actual Sunday timed runs were wet, and some of the UK entrants caused significant delays (not the WSCC team). Never been on such an oily course before which undoubtedly lowered our enthusiasm for putting in a very fast run. Richard, unfortunately, showed us what could happen. Glad to say he was ok other than a damaged hand and pride. He refused Tim Nun's offer of a massage and chose to have a shower with Graham and Martin :-) All in all a fantastic trip and to be repeated next year.1 point
