  1. Each to their own I guess, I'll be competing and supporting the Speed Series again this year, 11th year on the trot and personally I think the Series has only improved and gone from strength to strength. As for Prescott, if the club running it are not invited, they'll be hard pushed to invite us, but that's been well covered already. Give it a go TT, you might even enjoy it...

  3. Hope to see you all at Rockingham but not as a WSCC competitor. I entered before joining the Speed Series. I'm in >2.0L Mod. Prod. Also hope it's dry. Did North Weald on Sunday and it was bitterly cold and wet. Horrible day for open top motoring

  11. The first engine I took to bits was an old Briggs & Stratton side valve in my dads lawn mower - I learnt a lot ! Followed then by all the usual ones as I bought and rebuilt cars (Mini 998's, Ford X-Flow, Lotus Twin cams etc). I've coped with most but even on my XE now I get a bit twitchy about the fine tolerances, the torque and stretch one use bolts and the ease with which it can turn into a pile of scrap if something goes wrong. But of course the performance levels have risen at almost unbelievable rates (helped no end by the engineering first seen in the small Japanese bikes with their multi valve screaming motors). The latest developments from the likes of Ford and others with their "eco" engines is indeed impressive, but like the engines in F1 at the moment, they leave me cold in terms of ever wanting to rebuild or "tinker" with one (simply because I suspect unless you have a shed full of high tech electronic and specialist equipment, you can do little other than change the oil ). In a way should this all matter? - yes i think it does as it will inevitably "dumb down" the generations who used to want to know how things worked and how to fix them (warning: rant coming ) - these days we have a disposable mentality or one that simply isn't bothered how things work - just replace it or "get someone to fix it" - no wonder there are so many wolves out there just waiting to pounce (and that's the price you pay). Projects like the Bloodhound land speed record vehicle http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/ are essential to keep the lights burning on engineering skills and mechanical "enthusiasm" but I feel we will one day view kit cars and "old school" engines (i.e - those you can fix at home with a spanner) in much the same way as we see the veterans on the London to Brighton rally .

  12. Kez - yes, more than happy with the Wilwoods. I have to admit that I started off with their "Poly" pads but they never really got warm enough so have switched to the Mintex M1144 (I also had a larger disc but reverted back to a 248mm vented "capri 2.8" dimpled and grooved from Mtec and I think the combination is about right now). Rally Design have been extremely helpful in advising on the correct piston size and mounts etc. One thing I would suggest if you use the Wilwoods is to get any brake pipe adapters and fittings from RD as well (especially the 1/8NPT to M10 fittings ) - I got some from somewhere else and they were a tad too long into the caliper body and bottomed out - a right pain as it meant replacing them and bleeding the brakes again ! All smart and shiny (pads to be refitted - takes all of 10 seconds )

  20. I have just bought a new Ford Kuga 1500 petrol Ecoboost and it is really economical. Not as good as diesel but when you have to pay £2500 extra for a diesel and 7p a litre extra for diesel I worked it out that I would have to do 15,000 miles a year for 4 years before a diesel starts to pay back anything. The 1500 drives like a 2000 so no issues with performance either.
