SootySport Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Thanks again Andrew for showing me around your Westie, it was as nice as in the pictures. An excellent buy! So did you fit in the car Quinten? Quote
Quinten Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 So did you fit in the car Quinten? Unfortunately it seems that my hips are as feminine as my legs and although I was actually able to sit in the seats, it was pretty uncomfortable with the seat side firmly pressing onto my joints. Sitting in the same seat on the passenger side, with my legs stretched into the footwell it was fine, but as soon as I brought my foot closer (bending the knee in the process), I could feel the side jamming my bones. So, the search for a seat continues... Have now started to read up on foam seats (incl the canoe story ) and this may well be the best/cheapest solution going forward. Have more reading to do on that subject though, for instance, how the hell do you attach such a seat to the chassis? Or don't you? As a side note, the race chassis (which Andrew has) is definitely not suitable for me, so that was a great spot by Dave (gadgetman). Apologies Andrew for the slight thread hijack Quote
pete g Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 regarding the filter . I use itg filter and have had two fall apart one after only limited use . I sent it back and they sent me a new one . if it is exposed to daylight it needs to be made of a different foam.[that's what I was told] I was also using a nano type car wash .I was told this was not the problem . I stopped using it just in case I also. cover up the filter now when washing the car. Quote
Quinten Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Did you fit in it Quinten? Uhm... http://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic/107207-new-westfield-sew/page-3#entry1121292 Quote

Hi Quinten, I've no idea if anyone has ever done this, or if it would work. Would it be possible to put in a simple metal framework in the bag, then place in the car, pour in the foam and sit on it? The frame would end up on the bottom, mostly exposed and you could drill and tap holes in it and bolt through from underneath. I'm thinking of a # shape. The lower || running parallel to your legs and the = pieces on top the same width as the gap between the tunnel and side, so that once it is put in it won't move. The = pieces would then be embedded in the foam, with the || pieces exposed on their bottom edges. When the foam seat reaches the end of its life you just dig it out the foam and embed it in the next one. Just a thought. Jen Quote

Looking at some posts on other forums (sorry ) they all use the seat loose in the car, so I suppose it's not really an issue. I'd like the idea of it being fixed though, even if it isn't very solidly fixed. Quote
peet Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Can you get a seat made specifically for you in fibreglass/expanding foam? Bit like the F1 cars from the 70's? You sit on a cushion in the car and they pour it around you? (& sorry the other question didnt show when I posted!) Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I think that's more or less the plan? (Though I may have misunderstood) The two pack expanding foam is readily available, both from composites type suppliers and from Motorsports parts/equipment specialists - expext a "Motorsport Tax" though if buying from them. Mind you, if you sell tickets to the "fitting" you could more than pay for it :p Seriously though, my impression was that the seats weren't actually fixed as such - though the fact that they're poured in situ means they'll fit the chassis as closely as they fit you. Self adhesive Velcro could be used to stop any slight sliding around. But the main thing securing you + seat in place is the full harness set up. I think I'd probably want a six point set up though, so that there was zero possibility of the belts riding up and me and the seat sliding out from under them IYSWIM. Quote
Quinten Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Sorry again Andrew for taking the thread off-topic Yes, I have decided that the only way I am going to find a decent seat is by making it myself (and video it to earn my £250 from You've Been Framed) using the 2-part foam. The tip about velcro is a good one (why don't I think of these!) and saves mucking about with trying to get some kind of frame inside the foam. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Quinten, I have a cheaper solution. Put on your favourite driving clothes, tuck your shirt into your trousers and your trouser legs into your socks, sit in a car with no seat, and get your mates to fill the back of your shirt and trousers with expanding foam, which will mould itself to your unique body shape. You can then avoid buying a new seat, and all you need to do is jump into those clothes when you go for a blat. Of course, you might be a bit of a funny shape when standing at the bar dressed like that, but it's a small price to pay. Quote
