I remember serving Petrol in the late sixtys, Super 4s 6d a gallon I think (about 25p) Tigers tails hanging from petrol caps, and stick on bullet holes for windows, free with a few galls of petrol.

This is definately one for the old g*its on the forum

I had a whip ariel on my old Imp, that was a good old motor and had a lot of fun in it.

This topic is bring back memories alright. :)

The one item that made a huge differance to your speed was two stickers, one was an STP sticker the other said simply DISCS.

Lots of spot lights including a Lucas Flamethrower aimed straight into the eyes of oncoming drivers, woe betide the b*****d who didn't dip his lights coming towards me. Radiator blind operated from inside the car, lots of gauges not all of them useful, tiger tail hanging from the filler cap, cool eh!!!!!!!!!!

I had one of these!

4/6d was the 'proper' stuff, 4/4d was 'regular', and 5/01/2d was the really Good Stuff

Huh, you're just kids. My first car was a 1937 MG TA. Fold down windscreen. Great!! Bought it in the mid-1960s for £65 IIRC. Those were the days.

My first managerial job was a service station on the corner of Maple St and Whitfield St near the Post Office Tower. 2* petrol was 3/9d a gallon.

I well remember in about 1962 fitting a set of Desmo wing mirrors to a new MG 1100. The owner, an Australian who planned to take the car back to Oz fell about laughing when he saw them mounted over the centre line of the front wheels. We had to swap the plates to another new car and fit the mirrors just in front of the screen. We all thought the chap was mad.

Must type quicker (actually I got interrupted by the daily visit of the nurse to change the dressing on my thumb).

I could have bought a TC in 1964 for £100. The car was a bit famous as some scaffolding had fallen on it and the case went to court. The owner called it "Hortense". I was talked into taking a bank loan to buy a new Mini. When I bought the 7 it was a toss up between that and a TC. As I didn't have a garage at that time I decide on the 7.

Well we all make mistakes.

Spax adjustable rear shocks on the Escort "Twin Cam" 7 or 8 of us in the back of the car on the school run, My older brother getting 90 MPH out of my dads Consul 375, and telling us not to tell him!

How far engines have come on since then, I believe it was a 1.7 four cylinder, did about 26 to the gallon and went like a sloth. O and column change gearbox!

my Mother had a fairly early basic Mini. Almond Green, very popular for Minis at that time. I learned to drive on it. That would have been about winter/spring 1963/4. I bought the TA not long after, it would have been 1964 or 1965. It cost £14- to insure third party fire and theft!! Oh happy days!!

i've got one of them from my dad.. will use it on the flat glass of a series landie.. not sure if the rubber seal/membrane is still good though..

or i'll sell it to the historic rally crews for use in old porsches etc where their value gets lifted to silly heights :-D

What about padded "rally" seat covers , black vinyl with lumpy bits at the sides to hold you in.

Leopard skin seat covers pre dated those !

And... Painting your bonnet matt black

What about the mesh and string backrests to stop your back getting sweaty from the seats, I remember dad having one in a Cortina...
