Off Topic - Upvc Door-Lock On It's Way Out. Repairable?

Off topic, but only slightley.

 

I bought an expensive mortice lock at a closing down sale at the Casterama store in Angers. The lock turned 4 turns and the tongue wound it self all the way in.

 

Jacob drills the hole for the lock in the door he's made. He then finds, that if he turns the lock twice, the tongue doesn't retract enough. So he cuts a bit off! He comes round to fit it and thinks it's still sticking out too far so cuts another bit off and then finds he's cut the wrong end off. RIP lock.

 

We go buy another and he has to cut a bit off this one as it doesn't retract fully. Of course if he'd drilled the hole further way from the edge.....
