Oooh, congratulations !!  Didn't realise you'd tied the knot !  I know you'd mentioned it in the past but didn't realise it was so imminent - all the best for a long, happy and Westfield filled future  :t-up:

Thanks Nick!  We got hitched last Tuesday and although we had originally planned to elope in the Westfield, I'm still waiting on Raceline to make my motor mounts and exhaust manifold, so she (the Westy, not the Missus) won't be done for another couple of months :(   Speaking of which, your dash is still in the UK along with the rest of my shipment for another 2-3 weeks  :0   Let me know if you need it sooner.

Cheers,

John

No panic for the bits at all to be honest.

The "can't be  :arse: ed" factor is too high right now to worry about the little jobs I need to do on the car.  Might drag by back-side out there tomorrow, or then again I might just lounge around by the pool  :D

Caterhams are a good bit smaller and lighter and as a result are a bit nimbler

ok how much lighter?

My 1.8 Zetec puts out 174 bhp, cost me a fraction over £10k last year, and was weighed at Mallory with me (& helmet) in it 3/4 tank of petrol at 610kgs.

610kg, including the driver, seems pretty light I have to say.

When my car had a Xflow in it and 15" wheels it was weighed, admittedly on a public weighbridge, at 625kg.  Without me in it.

An R500 will struggle to hit 500kg, although I've seen at least three Caterhams sneak under this figure.  And one of those was a Vauxhall engined car.

And you can't get an R500 for £10k!

So how much would a 2nd hand £10k Caterham weigh and what performance might it have?

FWIW for that kind of money its possible to pick up a 1700 supersprint crossflow with 135bhp, and a 1.4 or possibly 1.6 K series Supersport with about 130-140bhp.

Mine cost me 12K, and is a 1996 1.6K supersport - the factory quote 138bhp but with a poor exhaust system on it, mine has a 4-2-1 system which i hope is a bit better. 0-60 depends on the exact model and spec but all the above should do it in under 6 seconds - ISTR the factory quotes 5.1 for the 1.6KSS back in 1996 (I just happen to have a brochure

My car with spare wheel (KN Minator + 185/70 A021R = 15kg :0 ), leather seats, heater, hood, some tools including a jack, and a full tank of fuel weighed 580Kg. I reckon by removing the spare, spare bracket, tools, hood, carpets  and heater I can get it down to 540-ish still with a full tank and by replacing the seats with tillets and spending silly money on carbon and ultra light wheels and tyres I can get it down to close to 500.

A crossflow engined car would weigh a bit more (+20Kg??) but then a crossflow weighs the same in a westy or in a caterham.

BTW I never said a 100bhp Caterham would go as fast as a 180Bhp westfield  . What i said was that being lighter it wont be as slow as you might think. Or to put it another way a 100bhp Caterham would be faster than a 100bhp Westy but slower than a 180bhp one. Ok now ?

I dont care if you think Westys are better than Caterhams or not. I like both (which is why I am on here from time to time) but I prefer Caterhams.

In any case I didnt buy it for the 'heritage' (MGB's also have heritage and I dont lust after them), I bought it because I read a roadtest when I was a kid, long before Westfield ever came along, and decided there and then that sooner or later (20 years later in fact) that I would have one. I looked at Westfields and went along to a couple of meetings and decided that a Caterham was still what I wanted even though it was a struggle to afford it.

Lord Muppet of Hensonville I am not. Unemployed in 30 days time I might be, but thats another story.

What about insurance premiums too?? A caterham isnt a Kit car, so presumably insurance is much more expensive?

It can be a kit (you can buy any or all of the mechanical bits from Caterham or source them yourself) but regardless of that they are classed as a specialist vehicle in the same way that Westys are. I doubt if a similarly specced and valued Westy and Caterham would have much difference premium-wise. FWIW 40 year old male, full ncd, 'safe' area , 1.6K ss = £200 per year fully comp.
