Fat Albert Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Just been through this with Direct Line, until last summer we had two cars with them for about 8 years, no claims. They sent a renewal for 'er in doors StreetKa with the premium up 80% (1.8 x last year). Same cover, same drivers, no claims, no points, etc. I made three on line inquiries, like for like cover was available from LV & CIS for 15% LESS than last year, SAGA with somewhat less cover (no guaranteed hire car), came out at 40% LESS than last year Result PS I suspect Direct Line want to get out of the car insurance market Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Finally got mine sorted through esure, but weird experience on excesses. > Original quote with £550 total excess: £370 > Revised quote with lower £400 total excess: £349! So more coverage for cheaper - tell me they have a clue what they're doing these days. Quote

Rab (bombero) Reid Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Its no wonder that two million cars aint insured at that rate.who can afford that sort of premium each year. They cant warrant that sort of increase by blaming it on uninsured drivers and increased claims, its just theft. Absolutely! National news over the last two days saying that motor insurance has jumped 40-50% this year! Companies blaming it on rise in claims and fraud .. .. so we're paying for their inability to reduce/uncover/prosecute fraudsters!! Surely that's the risk an insurance company takes when insuring someone. THEY are meant to take the risk and pay out if required. Also, they never mention the millions of drivers that don't claim .. they're still making a packet and just want to keep making more - F**KING THIEFS! Quote
Blatman Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 QUOTE Absolutely! National news over the last two days saying that motor insurance has jumped 40-50% this year! But that just isn't so. We are all seemingly getting QUOTES that are way above what we paid last year, and we're all shopping around for better deals so what we're actually paying is nothing like a 40-50% increase. BUT if there are enough people who are simply renewing without questioning then yes there will be a few people who have experienced a large rise, but I can't believe any of us would actually fall for that... Captain Colonial Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 BUT if there are enough people who are simply renewing without questioning then yes there will be a few people who have experienced a large rise, but I can't believe any of us would actually fall for that... You are correct, and what makes it all the more criminal is that insurance companies are taking advantage of renewing drivers who (unlike us) either aren't savvy enough to shop for a better deal, are frightened to change things, or those who are not Internet or computer experienced who shop around. If everyone shopped around, those people would not be subsidising drivers like us who do shop around, and we would all be paying higher premiums as a result. Quote
Blatman Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 And yet the folk at confused.com have an ad currently bragging that they have "helped" around 20,000,000 motorists. I'm sure that's just a clever way of advertising the web site hit count and I've been in two minds about actually complaining to the ASA myself about that particular claim 'cos it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny IMHO, but... IF it's true, then it would appear that the vast majority of motorists are shopping around... Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 The thing to also bear in mind with these rises is why they are happening. fraudulant claims, whiplash everytime there is a bump, ambulance chasers costs of repairing cars and my biggest gripe, accident management companies. Had an accident in my Jag, repair was about £1500 hire cost was over £3000!! Also bear in mind some companies are cheap for a reason, they avoid paying out. My home and travel is with NFU, I missed a cruise as was taken ill, no issue they are paying everything, somtimes cheapest is not best! Quote
stantman Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Bananaman, You mention 2 SP30's in the last 5 years (assuming both are showing on your licence) was the other one gained in the last 12months? Years ago when I worked for an insurers 1 SP30 was fine insurance companies regarded it as a minor bit of bad luck, 2 however and they would load your premium heavily regarding you as a habitual speeder and potential wreckless driver Not accusing you of being this (bearing in mind the heated debates in recent weeks on the forum) but it used to be the way they worked.
