njkmrs Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Just looking on Pistonheads and Caterhams for sale seem to be much dearer than Westfields .Any reason for this ? To me who is newish to this scene ,they look similar etc, have similar types of engine . Am I comparing like for like or is it comparing Ferraris to Fiats ?? Regards Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Just like a pizza is expensive cheese on toast, a name makes a difference but the flavour's the same. Quote

Jenko Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 This will most likely spark a huge discussion on the merits of both cars. Caterhams are certinaly more expensive to buy new, so second hand prices are always going to be higher. As mentioned, some might say that they are worth more because of the'Heritage' attached to the origional design (personally I couldn't give a toss about that). They also have an alloy body whereas the westie is fiberglass (again, I'm sure this adds to the price).... Now then, the age old price discussion....If heritage is important, then pay more and get a caterham......Pound / performance get a westfield......10k gets you a top notch westi with ~200bhp zetec / VX / bike engine, and all the nice bits......would get you an older cross flow caterham. The Seiw westfield also has a better rear suspension set up................. I also think Caterhams are generally lighter than westfields due to body material....... So it's down to priority and budget........Must admit, I'd chose a CSR 200 over the Sport 2000 westfield, but if you have 10k to spend, then a Westfield would win every time........... Quote
juansolo Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 The Seiw westfield also has a better rear suspension set up................. I actually think DeDion works tremendously well and it takes a *very* well set up IRS car to better it. Why change if it works? Quote
Al Yupright Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Caterhams are certinaly more expensive to buy new, so Not any more! Compare the prices of a Factory built 1.6 Sigma Westy and the equivalent Caterham. Quote

andy jacques Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I have recently done the exersize of caterham or westie. i chose westie, both cars have their merrit, both cars are good. I chose westie because they are local to me,the aftersales is exelent and they built me a bl**** good car. equally a caterham will fit someonelses needs better than a westie. Buy what will suit you best. NO SUCH THING AS A POOR SEVENESQ VEHICLE. ALL ARE GOOD FUN! Quote
JeffC Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 If buying second hand I would suggest that you would get much better value for money with a westy. Im a fan of the csr 260 durabang cateringvans just not sure I could write out a cheque for such a large amount of money to go slower if you have spare couple of days take a look here http://boardroom.wscc.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=31515 Quote

Sorry, I disagree, I would vote for IRS over De-Dion (although yes it does work well)...... As to why change it.....Ummmm, well can you explain why the new flag ship car (the Caterham CSR), has moved to IRS?..... Quote

Thats a fair point...just checked, and bl**** hell, the caterham is cheaper (all be it with the westfield having a slightly more powerful engine)........ Quote

kylemrushall Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Look at a Sylva Striker in my opinion it is a better handling car than the Westie and probably just out handles a Caterham. Prices are excellent to Before you all start shouting i have had all three and it is only my feelings. Quote
