nlash Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Have you tried a Nikon D70 or a Canon EOS300? Just curious... Reading above, i'd say these were out of Jon's budget The D70 doesn't take XD cards either Quote
Blatman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 It was a slightly off topic aside to MoTCO. Sorry. As for being out of Johns budget, yes they are, although the Canon will be nearer than the Nikon. However, Canon have brought out a 350D (IIRC), so the 300's will hopefully come down a bit, and Nikon have launched the D50 which is a feature rich SLR but nearer the amateur end of the market than the semi pro D70. However, it may still affect prices. My take on the cost of digi SLR's it this. I bought an Olympus SLR and a couple of lenses about 20 years ago. I sold them recently when it became obvious that decent prints could be had at home with even a modest 2-3 megapixel camera. So when I buy a D70, I'm rather hoping that it won't be obsolete for another decade at least. Being as the quality of the images for printing will be adequate even in 20 years, I can't see that buying a D70 now is necessarilly an expensive thing to do if you look long term, future advances notwithstanding of course... Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 The thing that above all else, even my inherent impatience with waiting for processing, drives me ever closer to digital photography is the appalling variation in processing houses' quality. I've had such a load of rubbish from so many processors that, prior to the dawn of digital cameras, I had pretty well turned exclusively to transparencies because of the fewer steps twixt lens and eyeball compared with prints. Who know of a reliable processor that doesn't cost the earth? Quote
KerryS Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 But Fish said MUST take XD cards therefore I think only Fuji and Olympus of mainstream take these. As Steppenwolf says, looks a good deal. My Panasonic has a huge zoom on it but takes SD cards and is twice the price, therefore Fish, has it got manual focus as an option? Makes multi-shots much quicker as you can pre-focus where the car will be. Indeed, has it got multi-shot facility and how quick is it? And how quick is it to take pix anyway? My first digicam was press button- make cup of tea - click. They are much better now but worth a thought. Kerry S Quote
nlash Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 A 16mm fisheye lens is a must Gee thanks... can't wait to tell the missus Quote
Blatman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I think your hoping for too much when you ask for the D70 not to be obselete in 10 years. The competition between Nikon and Canon, in the main, will mean the D70, D70s, D50 will be obselete next year! Obsolete for the camera anoraks maybe, but not for a happy snapper like me who wants to do the basics like snap an acceptable shot, and print it to some 6 x 4 or 7 x 5 media. The resolution of the D70 (and pretty much anything with more than about 2 mega pixels) is enough for that. The fast start up and short shutter lag times are really the only "extra" benefit I want from a digi SLR over and above lens choice and functionality that comes with an SLR type camera. Even the high end hi res point 'n' shoots still lag (sorry...) behind when it comes to boot up and slag... Quote

Blatman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Yeah, I know I've also been fortunate enough to have my hands on a couple of D100's and a couple of D2H's too. *Well* out of my league though... Quote
pistonbroke Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 D70 is a semi pro SLR type camera. It's the tits and as soon as I have finished the winter upgrades to the sprint car, I'll be buying one... EOS300 is it's primary rival and is equally fast at both boot up and frame capture. Nikon D70 rated very highly by professional motorsport photographers. Among them Ian Jones of worldrallyphotos.com gives it top marks ! though he doesnt use one his self Quote
pistonbroke Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Currently he uses Dynax9 and 9xi and is sticking with analogue atm. Quote
Martin Keene Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Surprising number of top motorsport photographers still use film. The gallery section at the front of F1 Magazine are nearly always film shots Quote

Also those guys made a big investment in equipment and would probably have to spend £2000 or more if they where to change over Cant see them throwing all those nice Minoltas in the skip yet Quote
Major Stare Posted July 5, 2005 Author Posted July 5, 2005 Cheers guys In answer to a few of the coments....... I used to have a camera a few years ago before digital came out, loved the changeable lens' and being able to adjust the camera to my requirements. My budget is tight and it also depends on how much i can sell my Olympus mju:300 for. I know want an SLR type camera that can have a bit of manual focus etc. The Fuji S5500 uses rechargable batteries but i have a battery charger with 4x Ni-MH batteries. I need to use XD cards as i have just purchased a 128MB card (i suppose i could sell this with the Olypmus and use another brand). Any idea's how much a 7 month old Olympus mju:300, boxed, instructions, software, 16MB and 128MB cards & charger is worth? Quote
