taffy Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Hi Guys, A bit sobering, but Pat was driving back from a "Do" last night with one of her mates and hit a cow that was wandering the roads in total darkness! A few mph more and she would have been a gonna! Cars a write off, cows a write off. SWIMBO and mate a bit shook up and covered in glass. Got home about 2.00 am this morning after sorting things out. Piece of road I know well and usually blast down about warp 2! Dont half make you think what can happen! Boys in Blue were fantastic. Rob Quote
Martin Keene Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Nasty. Car vs Cow. I've seen the mess a large dog can make to a car if you hit it fast enough, the mess a cow would make doesn't bear thinking about. Glad everyones OK. Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Steak for tea for the next few nights then Rob? Seriously, glad to hear that no one was badly hurt (except the cow). BBB Quote
Blatman Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Gotta say, that sort of thing is always at the back of my mind when blatting in the country. Coming across a cow/horse/sheep in the road at anything above walking pace in the Westfield and the consequences could be very serious indeed. I'm, also pleased to hear that everyone walked away unharmed. Oh, and I take mine medium rare. Ta Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Jesus H, Rob! Not the Westfield? No, surely not - it would have gone twixt the legs of an adult bovine. I gotta agree with Blatters though. I always (try) to drive within the stopping distance that I can see, if that makes the slightest sense. It is not always easy, though, as your Good Lady's experience shows. Glad she's OK; cows are bl**** heavy. The farmer's responsible, n'est pas? Round here the lanes are almost all bounded by high hedges and they're a bit like a lab-rat's maze, you can't see beyond the next corner. But you should see them in the rush hour! If just one Astra/Golf/BMW stopped quickly half of Bucks would come to a halt in a chain reaction. Quote
david.c Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Glad to hear everyone was OK................mine's medium rare aswell. A few years back I was on my honeymoon in Wales, and we were on the way back to our cottage after a meal out. The road was a superb twisty number through the valley which I had got to know very well over the week. In my tweaked Mk2 Escort I came flying round a corner to find a sheep in the road with a bit of quick braking and steering, and the sheep moving the right way I JUST missed it. I was very thankfull to that sheep, because just round the next corner the whole road was blocked with them and I would have taken out plenty David Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Glad to hear Mrs Taffy and co are ok. It must have been a real frightener Buzz Quote
chairemangeezer Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Hi Rob Glad to hear pat & friend are ok, I remember talking to somebody about this a will back and I don’t know whether it’s right or not, I’m Shaw they said that the farmer could not be held responsible and the driver was sent a bill for £1600.00 as compensation for the loss of the cow. Sounds bl*dy stupid if you ask me. Pete Quote
Blatman Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Bill may have been sent, but was it paid? I'd be counter claiming for damage due to the farmers negligence, to wit, not keeping his livestock adequately fenced in and protected.... Quote
Mrs Westy Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Cripes! Sorry to hear that Rob, please pass on my best wishes to Pat - glad that she's 'ok' even if the car isn't Quote
peterg Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Glad everyone is OK - chance for a new car then Quote
Steven (WE51STE) Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Hi, Best wishes to the wife. Glad everyones OK. Several years ago my uncle was driving his car down a country lane and collided with a cow. His Alegro estate was totalled, no one was hurt and if i remeber correctly I think the cow survived. The outcome was that it was the farmers responsibility and he duly paid up. Steve Quote
Blatman Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 There's probably an EU subsidy for this sort of thing... Quote
Steven (WE51STE) Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 What replacing (Brown) Alegro Estates ? Quote
