OT: Running in a diesel

A minute or two? Seriously?

Depends on exactly how hard you have been working the motor TBH. The more you have been ragging it, the longer it will need. A short journey to the shops aint going to cause probs. Towing, thrashing etc will take a lot longer for the heat to disippate.

I think Scruffs piccy says it all really.... ;)

Ok, understood...

Most of my journeys will be motorways any really, so probably just cruising. However, atm I tend to give the ST170 a blast over the last 3 or 4 miles as I leave the motorway. I guess I'll have to try to stop that in future.

yes ive done it on my van if it wasnt for the warranty it would have been vv expensive glad it wasnt the subaru.when the turbo goes pop it the keeps runnig the engine by sucking all the oil out of it even after turning off the ignition you have to stall the engine. try doing that on a busy dual carrage way. when the car/cab is full of acrid diesel /burning oil.on a lighter note if its your own company i have a fuel card which i save up to 10p a litre with  if you want details let me know

Gotta agree on the turbo cooling thing. Whenever I take mine out, I drive the last couple of minutes or two with the car on tickover, or *just* above, to give the oil time to cool. Fortunately, the diesel is so strong that it'll drive on tickover even with the trailer/Westfield/Speed Series kit in/on the car.

Yes, but it's nothing to do with a company...

I should doubt if the turbo boosts enough pressure to get really hot. If you don't drive like a nutter for the last few miles of a journey you can just turn it straight off.

Unlike a rotary, where you're advised to idle for a couple of minutes both at the start and the end of a journey (another reason not to buy an RX8).

wrt running in a diesel, our Zafira 2l dti (or tdi or whatever) was run in according to the manual (i.e. don't exceed Xkrpm for the first 500 miles).

The other thing I remember from the manual is to make sure the "pre-heat" thingamajig is used before the first ignition.

YMMV

A colleague had an Audi delivered the other day and they now supply "top up" oil to use before the first service.

About time too, the robbing sods at the VW  franchise in Wigan (where I happened to be when the low oil light came on!!;) wanted £19 for 1 litre of oil!!!

wifeys just  bought a mini `one`diesel, absolutely brilliant car.

BMW (SPECIALIST CARS) said run normally from the off. So I did and have been `almost` thrashing it.

Superb handling, awesome brakes, revvy (6 speed box)

yes :0

I thought it would be totally gutless, the 0-60 isnt brilliant BUT through the gears its superb as the 6 speed box (notchy shift) keeps it right in the power band 2K-4.5K  It holds 110 mph (indicated) up hill and down motorway.

Its two turns lock to lock and the handling/turn in is fantastic. I am 6` 1" and have the (cloth) seat on three stops from the back with loads of room for driver and passenger ,back seats are huge but no leg room with seats back. Its got a few extras, chrome and spoilers etc and apart from the `D` on the back you cant tell it apart from others.

Bought for economy for the wife (having tested them all) but I am definitely gonna get a supercharged cooper one day :p

It also returned 48 mpg on the first `enthusiastic` tankful :p

They are everything and more than you have heard about. Test drive one for fun, you`ll love em
