OK, I was assuming that the light = fast was the point of this debate. I tend to disagree (at the moment) assuming one is running road tyres & the cars are being used in the Speed Series. Heavier Westfields, up to a point, seem to grip better in all conditions (wet included) on road tyres, just my opinion & I'm not applying science to my theory, only my calibrated back side.

Also one other point - I find it odd that people who are raving about light weight in a Westy aren't seen competing in their cars. What's the point in building a lightweight car for the road I ask? Unless you have a need to save on fuel or tyre wear or something. :suspect:      :0  :p  ;)  :)

purely in the interests in keeping the thread going

answer

a) as a track day/fast road car you want it to feel good, and a light car will accelerate faster, stop better and corner better (all other things being equal) and should feel - but what is feel ??? better

b) pub w@nk value  :suspect:

c) so that you can blat round country roads quicker than your mates

d) so that when you finally get around to having the budget and do go competing the car is reasonably competitive.

:D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Made me chuckle I must admit................ however losing weight is the `cheapest` method of gaining performance. Whether anyone can tell is a different matter due to the small gains.

I threw away carpets heater spare wheel hood/tonneau etc etc and saved perhaps 30 + kilos kg in total and it was noticeable. To then spend gazillions on carbon fibre et al I found was relatively pointless (IMO) cos you could go on a diet or have a dump before you go out :0 and get the same results.

There is a hillman Imp out there that is 500kg wet with 150 bhp and runs rings around loads of cars on track  :p:0

So i'll see you and your tin top next season then :D

If heavier cars go faster in all conditions, then you must be top dog :D  :D  :p

My country roads have speed camera's :bangshead:

I guess buying expensive lightweight carbon & titanium bits eats into the motorsport budget then.  ;)  :p  :D

I tend to agree with you a bit ;)

FWIW, I intend to compete at Goodwood on 7th August, but I don't pretend to be quick.

You lot can pull my car apart and take the mickey out of me and my driving, I don't mind co's I'm sure it's all in good taste really  :D

But, me in my little car does hope to be competitive next year, that is my plan.

Since January this year when my car was finished I've only done 650 miles, but to be honest 500 of those must have been done on the track, i've been getting used to it, it has to take time surely   ???

See you there all being well :D

Are you rallying the Westy then? Interesting concept

Rob,

Whilst we are on the subject of lightweight components - you got a chance to do those plates for me yet? I'll be at Harewood if you are there too!

Cheers

Nice one. As soon as you add the competitive element you'll get a bigger buzz from driving it than you'll ever get at track days. Remember to get your Speed Series registration in early.

Also don't wear it out! :)

Errr...the two left wheels look like they're on the ground to me...

I've had mine off the ground going over a hump back bridge...

Bit scary to be honest!
