Martin Keene
And apparently that design was nicked from BMW originally. Not true. The original 3.5 all alloy V8 was a low revving marine engine that a Rover exec saw languishing in Buicks development facility on a visit to the US to source a new engine for the P5 and when they went looking for it in the 50's, Buick had finished with it and it was considered scrap. The engine orignally went into production in 1922... which means the rover v8 has been around for ~80% of the life of the car itself... and tragically next week will be the last week of mass production... but, it will reappear in small volume production at an approved ford spares supplier (Mitchell Cotts for anybody who's heard of them) for warrenty purpose's and cars such as seight, morgan, etc ps: got shown round the production line for it a few weeks ago and got the engines life story, hence the above... Mike H
and tragically next week will be the last week of mass production... but, it will reappear in small volume production at an approved ford spares supplier (Mitchell Cotts for anybody who's heard of them) for warrenty purpose's and cars such as seight, morgan, etc Mitchell Cotts? Does that mean it will be expensive? I've spoken to them before at various shows about diffs, I know they fully remanufacture the things but that means they end up being very expensive for a kit car. Do you know if they will just be doing the later blocks - ie 4.0/4.6 or will they also do 3.9/4.2? Mike
Blatman
When I spoke to the Mitchell Cotts folks a while ago, they explained that their business is aimed at volume/wholesale production/supply for companies, rather than single units to enthisiasts/individuals/the retail market...... Martin Keene
nail on head Blatman... They are primarly putting it back into production for Land Rover's spares requirement. As far as I'm aware it is only 4.0 & 4.6 ltr being manufactured as 3.9 & 4.2 would no longer be covered by warrenty???
S8ight
thought the 3.9 and 4.0 where the same engine, just different fuel systems ?
Martin Keene
3.9 & 4.0 are different. 4.0 & 4.6 are the same, crank stroke makes the difference... actually its a bit more than that, but it involves ultrasonically measureing the wall thickness to the water jacket...
