A quick update to let you all know that our MX5 mapping service is now up and running. I'm currently up to capacity till mid march.

And waiting list building up nicely.

If you have an NC or an ND (pre 2024) Send me a line to discuss the possibility of having the best mapping service for MX5 that your engine could ask.

Thanks

maurici.

Service descriptions specifically for the WSCC also updated in the second post

I visited CleaR Motorsport yesterday to have a full geo and corner weighting set up. @Mark19691 joined us for the session as he's keen to have his car set up soon too.

My car is just a few feet away from the scales as @Maurici- CleaR Motorsport get set up.

Here's the start position (with me in the car)- I'm circa 70kgs.

The scissor lift made it easy to remove the rear wheels.

Unfortunately the rear (alloy) spring perches on both my rear Spax dampers are galvanically corroded  to my steel bodied dampers. We didn't want me to end of immobilised, so brute force was limited. A quick call to @DamperMan confirmed there was little more we could do with the shocks on the car and he's offered a solution for me to take up in the future to resolve the issue.

As my car is only used on the road, some may say corner weighting isn't necessary any how.

My front camber was adjusted and this meant the toe needed to be adjusted again (it was done recently when @Maurici- CleaR Motorsport kindly did a home visit).

Rear camber was spot on and rear toe also.

A quick test drive confirmed all was well and car was turning in nicely and handling well.

A great service by a very friendly and knowledgeable member. It's great to have such a service available again in the NW and only 25 miles away for me. A rear asset to the club and if you've seen any of his video's of him flying round Oulton in the Lobster, he clearly understand how a driver can get the best out of a chassis too!

Good read on the geo set up session @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO - I had a similar day last year with our local guy and it was a real education for me, really enjoyed it.

Was curious to see the weight of your car though. Mine weighed in a few kilos lighter and I’ve got windscreen, full cage, heater, carpets etc so I was surprised at the weight of Bagpuss. Is the Honda a heavier set up or something compared to mine (Zetec)? That said, the Honda has more power and it’s a long time since I was a svelte 70kgs!

The Honda is a heavier set up than the average small planet, let alone a Zetec!

(I was once pulling the leg of an SEiGHT owner about the weight of their Rover gearbox, - 40+ kg. They politely suggested I check the weight of the Honda box! Yes, it was heavier than the v8’s ‘box!!)

The Honda f20c engine and box are surprisingly big and heavy for an all aluminium four pot.

Oh, and chatting to @Maurici- CleaR Motorsport just before Christmas, about a handling issue that had been niggling me for a bit - ever since I had those horrid ditch finder tyres on, in fact. (The Uniroyals though much better, still lacked the superb turn-in and "bite" the car used to have.

After chatting about my set up - which will need a refresh as well, Maurici suggested refitting the front ARB, (Playskool item, so softer than WSC Ltd's), set to full soft.

I knew the rose joints were a little worn before I removed the bar previously, so got a fresh set from McGill and re-instated the arb.

First trip out was a couple of weeks ago, but the roads were a bit damp and cold to get any sort of decent feedback. Today however, was a lot better in the Peaks. Though a bit damp in places, in the morning still, and cold. The car still felt noticeably more pointy and re-assuring though. The trip back over the hills and moors was great fun though, with the car back to feeling way more like it should, quick and sharp turn in, feeling like it just wants to bite and grip!

Many thanks Maurici!

To add onto the ARB controversy...

There is no good reason to not be using the correct Antiroll bar. And I'll insist CORRECT, in the front.

Rear isn't quite that necessary till you push it to the limit.

But an ARB with the right stiffness range in the front is a TOOL to balance your car's behaviour.

Softened to the very limit will control the roll a little bit (not a bad thing) and be very very unobtrusive to the natural behaviour of the car, while allowing you to stiffen the front end roll progressively to play with the under/over steer transition of the car, and sharpening/quickening the weight transfer into the outer wheels.

Having said that, the wrong ARB, will completely ruin the front end of the car.

@Maurici- CleaR Motorsport What would the correct front ARB be for a Zetec powered Westie?

I suspect he's suggesting the softer/adjustable Playskool (not longer in business - but plenty sold) or Siltech bars, rather than the stiffer Westfield factory bars.
