Cobra 427 Build

I have been steadily sanding the bodywork all down the passenger side. This has exposed lots of ropey areas of gelcoat that I have sanded away. It also exposed loads of little holes that need digging out to make sure all the loose is gone.

I decided it was time to man up and try and panel gap the bonnet and fit it properly.

Firstly I fitted some rubber pads to support the bonnet level with the bodywork. I have fitted 6 in total. The 4 nearest to the scuttle need the underside of the bonnet building up a bit to get it level.

With those fitted I decided to gap the bonnet and also fill all the perimeter joint on the underside.

Part filled, you can see the join on the unfilled area.

And the rest roughly done

Done some more work on the underside of the bonnet today. It’s getting there slowly.

At some point I will need to make some cut out holes in the bodywork.

The front of the bonnet scoop

The holes for the side vents

Anyone got any tips/ideas on the best way to do this neatly?

A finger sander can be pretty handy for that sort of task - much more controllable than say a Rotozip or router. Even simply chain drilling then joining the dots. Mostly depends on access I think. The recess for the side vents looks like you could just cut the back out of it using a slitting disc on the grinder...assuming access though.

I have always used wooden patterns and in this case cut round using Dremel type machine with a diamond thin cylindrical cutter. According how good you are with the machine make up the pattern, inside the cut line if confident or outside if do not trust yourself, diamond tools in general do not cut wood easily so edges should say crisp and accurate.

I think I will chain drill them

I admire your dedication to get the bit of the bonnet we don’t see sorted. Respect!

It’s a good way to have a practice and tune the skills up before getting to the main panels

The dust cloud over Oxfordshire now turned from red to grey I guess ;).

More great work Gary, you’ve obviously got a lot of patience, keep it up.

Spent some time today adjusting the bonnet fit to equalise the gaps down the sides.

The area at the front of the bonnet needs the gap reducing/straightening and at the back of the bonnet the gap needs enlarging in the central section

So I set about the front joint of the bonnet and body
