Tonight I hinged the passenger door. The hinges need finishing off and bolting to the door, but the positioning is done.

A look at the fit now the adjustments and hinging are complete

I am really pleased with the improvement. A few hours of filling and sanding will hopefully make it a decent job

You deserve to be chuffed to bits with that! In particular, that you've got the raw tub that close, before you start in with the  body filler.

I do remember a time when that’s what many, most(?) kits were like though. You got a chassis with no brackets/mounts, and a body that was roughly the right shape if you squinted from a distance. It was a rare breed that actually completed one of that generation cars, you’re well on the way to joining them.

Cheers Chris.

Next will be to improve the chocolate hinges!

Most impressive as ever.  You should be well chuffed with that.

The door hinge set up was a bit wobbly, by that I mean there seemed to be a bit of flex or play in there somewhere.

I decided to replace the bosses with something more substantial

Here is a photo of the original ones. The bosses had a wall thickness of 2mm

And the new ones

The overall diameter of the boss is larger and the wall thickness is 5mm meaning there is 2.5 times more bearing surface on the mounting bracket.

Initial testing indicates that it seems to have done the trick.

I have started to cut more holes in the body, this time for the roll hoops

Polished roll hoops from the kit manufacturers are expensive (best part of £300 for a pair). I didn’t fancy paying that so took a punt on a pair of Audi TT roll hoops ages ago, one of which you can see above.

Tonight I decided to have a look at the other one.

I attacked it with the DA, first starting with 120 grit sandpaper, followed by 180 and then 240.

Then I set about it with my cheap polishing kit from Toolstation

https://www.toolstation.com/polishing-set/p58727

First using the red bar

Then the green bar

Its just less than half done for an hour of my time. It will need a finer polish once it’s all to this level.

I should bring the pair of them in for less than £50 so a saving not to be sneezed at for a few hours effort

That’s always something that we can “trade” with ourselves.

My wife often looks at me when I say “the cost in my time to (insert chore here) is not worth it - best pay someone who knows what they are doing” - she then relates that to the extraordinary amount of hours I will happily spend fitting a (inset Westy component here) 😁
