Cobra 427 Build

I feel your pain. I had to do some fairly extensive “adjustments “ to some of the fg parts on my last build. That had a mixture of old and abused parts plus a few brand new parts. If you have the space, a layer of glass tissue over the top helps with the finish. FWIW, I did similar methods to those you are using here and finished off with a filler skim. Just need to give it plenty of time to cure between layers and processes or you risk voids and dips.

Tonight I stitched the back half of the arch ready to add some matting.

To get the arch to Reshape I used a heat gun to soften the existing GRP before stitching

That looks complicated!! Don't ever stitch me up if I get a cut...

I managed to get a couple of layers of chopped strand matting on the underside of the rear section of the wheel arch. Hopefully this will bond nicely and allow me to remove all the screws/plates.

Screws and stitching plates removed. I then removed the gelcoat both sides of the cut /repair. I then feathered down the existing bodywork where it was cut to level into the new matting on the underside

Once this was done I laid up a couple of layers of chopped strand matting on the topside of the arch

Finally a view from above looking down at the rear section of the arch. I am quite pleased with the initial shape that has been achieved. It feels like a good base to work on to smooth everything out

If I did this I’d be covered in so much sticky resin I’d look like a pubescent Spider  Man.

And the car would end up held together with tie wraps

I don’t seem to be getting much garage time lately which is a bit frustrating. I managed a short spell this evening and started to trim/shape one on the rear arch liner panels.

Now the heat has eased, I got in the garage and got busy with matting, resin and fumes.

First rear arch liner glassed.

I had also been thinking about how to bolt down the fuel filler cap, as access to the top of the fuel tank is non existent due to the nature of the boot and rear bulkhead panels.

So I decided to make up a captive retaining ring with threaded holes to bolt into

All bonded to the underside of the bodywork
