Today I sprayed the engine with two coats of VHT silver and then two coats of VHT clear over the top

Once the paint was touch dry, I removed the bellhousing and put it back on the gearbox and applied two coats of VHT clear.

Finally I finished of with an hours worth of cleaning and prep for some more painting

Its amazing the difference painting upmthe engine and box makes, doesn’t half make it that bit easier to keep clean in the future, too.

Yep agreed. The box has come up lovely, I really like the darker colour

Agreed, I quite like doing main castings in a natural aluminium finish for a sort of “this hasn’t been painted really” look, but have just been doing some bits myself in a darker metallic grey, not a million miles from yours, (matches my cam-cover infil), and the darker grey really lifts the whole lot! Works really well on your gearbox and didn’t you do the inlet manifold in it, too?

Seeing the box there reminds me, when I did my Fake Snake I had the gearbox overhauled and got the bloke to put a seal on the selector shaft where it enters the rear casing. They tend to chuck oil out of that hole as it’s just a plain bore and can wear. IIRC he used an input shaft seal from a classic Mini gearbox.

Looks nice in that colour combination.

Just my twopence worth Gary. I love reading it and marvel at you ingenuity. Keep up the good work.

Tonight I set up my "Spraystation" and set about spraying all the smaller components.

First two coats of VHT primer

Followed by two coats of VHT black and a top coat of VHT clear

Amazing the difference paint makes!

Makes it all jump out, and it feels like you’ve made s big step when you stop fabricating and start painting parts

Posted

I have to say I have really enjoyed the cleaning and spraying element as the parts have come up so well considering they are 40 years old, very satisfying

Posted

Yes they were built to last then which benefits you now

Time to dig out the prepared rocker covers

Then it was time to break out the VHT crackle paint. Let's just say I have been a touch unpopular for a couple of days :d

Not a bad result though after a few coats of VHT clear over the top
