KugaWestie Posted November 15, 2018 Author Posted November 15, 2018 Original RV8 gearbox mounts arrived today So I dug out the gearbox mount bracket, the rubbers fit on the angled sections I found some exhaust manifold studs that I had spare, so I positioned the bracket and then drilled and tapped the bottom of the chassis tube. I screwed the studs into the chassis and then welded them in. Gearbox mount complete. What it does mean is in future I can just undo the 4 nuts and the gearbox can come out through the bottom of the car easily if the need arises.
KugaWestie Posted November 15, 2018 Author Posted November 15, 2018 My new Denso alternator arrived today. I won't be using the Rover one!
KugaWestie Posted November 17, 2018 Author Posted November 17, 2018 I started sorting out then new alternator position this afternoon. i made up a new mount for it. Normally on the RV8 the alternator is on the driver side of the engine, but to me it looks like there isn't more room on the passenger side, so that's where is it going. So the mount is made and the alternator is on position. Next job is to sort out the adjuster bracket
KugaWestie Posted November 17, 2018 Author Posted November 17, 2018 I also cut the front section of shaft off the water pump in front of the pulley. This means it now clears the front chassis rail
Kingster Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 The alternator belt looks a bit flimsy mate

KugaWestie Posted November 18, 2018 Author Posted November 18, 2018 I completed the alternator mounting tonight. I found an MX5 slider in the stores so utilised that and made up a bracket to join up from engine to slider. The bracket needs a bit more shaping to lose the corners/smooth it off, but I will sort that when the engine comes back out.
KugaWestie Posted November 19, 2018 Author Posted November 19, 2018 A bit of cleaning tonight on one of the spare rocker covers
AdamR Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 All looking good Gary! A thought about your engine mounts, they look pretty chunky, maybe 6mm? If your welder isn't a monster you may struggle to penetrate that thick, you can bevel / chamfer the edges of the plates to help it get in further if necessary Also, spotted this online and thought it might be a worty addition for anyone doing bump steer stuff in future: http://www.locost.ozcarnut.com/html/suspension_34.html
KugaWestie Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 I primed the rocker covers tonight
KugaWestie Posted November 24, 2018 Author Posted November 24, 2018 My little Black Friday Haul arrived today, a nice 17% saving 123 ignition; performance electronic coil; HT leads; spark plugs; valley gasket and rubber seals; Holley 4 barrel gasket and rocker cover gaskets. I removed the slot drive from the Lucas dizzy and fitted it to the 123
corsechris Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Good call on the dizzy. Those old Lucas electronic ones they fitted to the SD1 weren’t the most reliable of things. They suffered badly with ring cracks and dry joints on the PCB inside them. Fixable, but never really trustworthy beyond a certain age.
KugaWestie Posted November 25, 2018 Author Posted November 25, 2018 So a bit more cleaning today. Here is the standard Rover oil filler cap I patiently cut away and peeled the orange plastic covering off. I then sanded and polished the alloy that I exposed to give me this. It still needs a bit more polish work but very pleased so far!
KugaWestie Posted November 25, 2018 Author Posted November 25, 2018 Whilst in cleaning mode I attacked the inlet manifold. Cleaned and washed. It's ready for primer once it has dried
