Steve (sdh2903)
With all the hybrid and EV talk and deadlines looming before the pure petrol engine disappears. Even ferrari are dropping to 6 pots. What fun attainable petrol car would you buy to take you into the next era of motoring? (not Inc the westy) I've narrowed my choice to around 5 or 6 BMW m3 or m4 competition (previous gen the new ones are gopping) Alfa guilia quadrifoglio A 911 of some description Or to scratch the v8 itch Mustang gt Merc c63s What will/would you buy? Dibby
Why does it have to be petrol? With the endless torque and no gears I'd love to try a ludicrous mode Tesla or the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo estate thing to get all the biking and camping gear in

The point was to enjoy the last of the petrol breed. I actually had a ride in a model 3 dual motor a couple weeks back. yes ridiculously fast but completely and utterly soul-less. TAFKARM
Panamera Sport Turismo or a Dark green Range Rover on small wheels.
BigSkyBrad
Dodge Power Wagon 1946-57. I'd have to act quick coz the prices have been rising and rising over the last few years. Ideally with modern-powertrain conversion (Cummins 6BT or similar), but I'd have to put the missus on the game 24/7 for that.
corsechris
I think I must be broken, 'cos I can't think of a single one I'd actually consider buying. The Westy & Midlana provide enough by way of a visceral and raw experience. Anything else would just be an expensive way of going faster...which is largely pointless IMO. Went to WoW last week and there was an amazing array of stuff on show. Only thing that I found appealing was a lovely Delta 16V Integrale - one that got away for me really, but that was just nostalgia creeping in. Richard (OldStager)
the key word in the question for me is the attainable bit steve, i kind of have that already but you say i cant have a westy, so this a quite hard for me. i am really into cars from say pre 1990, big scope there but with the prices of older cars rising as they are, the cars i want are no longer within reach. had the word attainable not been there i would have said series 1 e type and or healy 3000, but they are off the table. i think then it has to be a car from the 60's or 70's which is where my love of cars started really. i have a chance to buy a mk2 cortina, but its in boxes , i rebuilt the engine some years ago but the owner died in the middle of a resto, the cash wanted for this is within my budget, but not sure aged 56 i want to get underneath a rusty car anymore, besides which health issues will make it a very long rebuild. taken me ages to write this as i cant think what i would have, so going to say , spitfire, classic mini or if i sold some body parts a decent rover p5b.
BillyPee
On the assumption you don't mean as a daily driver then I would have a short list of two. If a brand new car then Toyota GR Yaris. If newish, then Alfa Romeo 4C. For me it is about having a small and fun to drive car and not outright power. It needs to be small for me to enjoy it on the narrow roads in the Peaks, Lakes and Dales. On the subject of 911, I would chose a Boxster (986 or 987) instead. Again, it suits my needs better and is much cheaper than the equivalent 996 or 997. Being mid-engined you sacrifice unusable back seats for a useable boot --- much more practical for weekends away. Later models I would avoid as the Boxster went 4 cylinder and the 911 too big and wide.
IanD
This is really interesting as the same thoughts were going through my head only a few days ago. I was thinking what I had owned, front, rear and 4 wheel drive. 4 and 6 pot, turbo and none turbo. Only engine type I haven't owned is a V8 (and a V10 and 12 but that's not going to happen). Struggled to think of something accessible and V8 other than things like Audis and big BMWs though. as a second car I am thinking budget here 10k or less which limits thigs a little. That said I keep coming back to a Boxster which isn't a V8 too many cars not enough time and money
Labrat
Ultima Evo or a Subaru Impreza turbo 2000 (~1999-2000). Or take a series 3 landy and stick an LS7 in it

I thought the 911s had gotten fat aswell but was at a fancy car dealer over the weekend whilst the lad picked up a new car and they had a lovely 911 gts It was stunning even though it hadn't been prepped and didn't seem big to me? But then again if you put it next to a classic one it would prob dwarf it. Sadly not in the attainable category. Well not without remortgaging and its too small to sleep in Boxster is too similar to the westy to have both, although I have considered swapping one for the other a few times.
