I bought Osram LED tubes which came with a dummy starter. They are a plug and play replacement. The LED ones are much brighter and switch on instantly. To make the full energy saving, you need to open the fitting (mains off first 😉 ) and remove the ballast circuit. I'm happy to advise how to do this too. They're not cheap, though! Other brands are available etc, but I've no experience of non Osram items. Some 5ft ones here- LED Lamp or LED lamp Note the different in brightness (LM). If you're on double fittings you may find one tube per fitting is fine or use 2000LM for both. Unlike fluorescent tubes which put light out in 360 degrees, the LED fittings are directional and point the light downwards. So I was able to remove the metal reflectors from mine too (I sometimes caught my head on them climbing into the loft space of the garage). I'd try one to start with and see what you think etc. Best regards, Ian 1 Quote
neptune Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I did the same during lockdown 1 . My tubes are double 5' and I bought Phillips led because they were £10 each at B&Q. Best upgrade to the garage since the Westfield!! 2 Quote
mikef Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I used these and very impressed with them. Just disconnected the old neon tubes and connected these. The light difference is impressive. LED Lamp 1 Quote
Robin Parker (Red Spider) - Yorkshire AO Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I replaced mine with 6 foot LEDs from screwfix, around £30 each. Quote
BigSkyBrad Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I had put up with 2x single-1500mm in my double garage, but my eyesight is getting worse for age, so I shifted one in to the centre and got (the attached) LED for the bay I work in the most. What a revelation, so much brighter for a good price. I reckon with all three of them being these LED's, I could start up a 'herbal' hydroponics operation! https://www.toolstation.com/integral-led-lightspan-ip20-ik08-batten/p57915 Quote
dombanks Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I bought 4x 5ft led lights from ebay cost around £60 to replace a single bulb on a cord in the middle of the garage. you could argue it was overkill but my god the lighting in there is now bright. similar to these just not branded. (i also have one of these in my loft and its ace) https://www.amazon.co.uk/V-TAC-Fittings-Integrated-1500x74x24mm-Lighting/dp/B07GCKDM6N/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=led+batten&qid=1616606220&sr=8-5 the only issue i have with mine are they have 3 light output settings which operate from the light switch so if you go in and out the colour changes slightly. Simple to connect up and ones at work have lasted well.. Good prices.. I also bought bulk head lights for outside with sensor..really bright and only about 7watt 1 1 Quote
John Dolan - Wirral & North Wales AO Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Replaced my 4 twin fluorescents with 4 single LED's, what a difference. Bright white light, and the battens are only 25mm deep. Instant light too. 1 Quote
Rich201060 Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I had mine from screw fix they have a decent range . Quote
stickymint Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I replaced two out of four with ones from Screwfix. The light they give out is far better than the old fluorescent ones, it's reminded me I need to replace the other two! 1 Quote
Alan Cutler (Adge) - Dorset AO Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Replaced 6 fluorescents in my garage/workshop with LEDs from Screwfix. Impressive difference light wise and they come on immediately. Very pleased, and worth the money IMHO. 1 Quote
