GaryD1971 Posted March 24, 2021 Author Share Posted March 24, 2021 This was the penultimate power run, but unfortunately the remote gear linkage to the type 9 came loose and started bouncing of the propshaft! Not a nice noise at 6500rpm... Funnily enough Dave W. didn't want to do any more runs after that! 😂 Didn't get chance to do the final tweaking on the last run, but Dave said to bring it back when I've got it fixed and he'll finish it off. TableLeg Posted March 25, 2021 Share Posted March 25, 2021 Losses at the wheels can be caused by a number of factors such as tyre pattern type, pressure, torque of the engine and often the straps securing the car down. All these can have a big impact on the drag on the coast down. I started with about 50bhp and ended up with over 90bhp losses just due to wheelspin and the tightness of the straps trying to keep the wheels on the rollers. We sort of can, but it comes at a different cost! Obviously, we could change to completely different more modern gearboxes, presumably with fewer losses, but then we may have ratio compromises. Or we can change to modified versions of Type 9's and get spot on ratios. Some of these uprated boxes do also have bearing and oilway mods that will help (a little) to reduces losses. But the main way we can get the right ratios and get good reductions in losses is to go straight cut; the change from helical to straight cut gear sets significantly reduces the friction as the gears mesh, (there's less metal in contact with metal, at any given time. - ignoring the oil in there).
