DonPeffers
I love the phrase united in ineptitude and thank you for it Captain. I guess it's how the Nation is feeling.
Captain Colonial
@DonPeffers It reminds me of another phrase I heard once that sums it up, two words I'd never heard put together - refreshingly stupid. This just in... 1
DonPeffers
Michael Gove said he too had taken drives to test his eyesight. Recommend he takes a trip to Barnard Castle. This government is comedy gold just when I thought situation comedy was dead.

Given "the public" are unlikely to understand how a country at large works it has to be left to those who have convinced us they do have a handle on it. Would I rather the politicians listened to the public when considering Covid-19 decision making? Absolutely not. We'd have all the pubs open, the Premier League would never have stopped and we'd have no 5G masts left...

When Starmer suggested the idea of a Government of National Unity to tackle covid-19 I was very much against it viewing the situation that a recently elected Government with a majority of 80 and many very bright MPs could do the job alone. I am no longer sure I was correct. A Police Commissioner when asked how 14 day quarantine and track and trace self-isolation would be policed said he didn't know and thought it might be impossible. Hi Dom I would agree with that if the press acted in an impartial manner to the issue. I don't believe anyone considers the press handling of this matter is in any way balanced. If the press want to act responsibly how about they focus on the 300bn debt we have and what the plans are for recovery. Im many more times worried about that. Press have wasted 2 weeks and tied up vital resources on all fronts. Do i agree or support DC no. There are many many more imortant things going on and wasting even 1 minute of leaders time is not at this time a benefit. For the future if they wish yes. But now ? Honestly. While Rome burns. At least the general public are asking sensible questions.

Labour have been out of power so long and suffered such a bad loss that they are looking for any excuse to look even slightly useful. It reeked of desperation when it was suggested by Corbyn during Brexit and it has the same stench now.

Arm
This situation is daft on all sides. On pistonheads they are whipping themselves into a frenzy I've not seen before. I've read many views to try and get an understanding of the mindset of people and their views. Copied and pasted one comment ref alleged press misrepresentation. Maybe you agree maybe you don't All below is a quote and is not my view. My view is charge him and let courts decide. QUOTE If we are talking of consistent lies the media is well in the lead on this one Durham Police spoke to Cummings family and warned him about breaching lockdown LIE There was a second trip to Durham (widely reported on Sunday) LIE Self isolating on the family farm was a breach of the regulations LIE Most people have got caught up in this one and mainly on the basis of false media reporting. They don't want to lose face by admitting they were misled by the media so instead they fanatically continue to insist that a man be fired from his job for a 28 mile drive to take a short walk and sit by a stream.
stephenh
My Jaguar XKR hasn't been out for many weeks, and could really do with a half hour run to "blow the cobwebs away". I've been having a bit of a funny turn with my eyesight recently. Can't make up my mind whether I'm ok to drive. Who thinks I might be able to kill two birds with one stone here? Seriously though, haven't the press got more serious things to worry about at the moment, regarding the fight against the virus?

The eyesight thing (and yes Stephen I know you are parodying) is just idiotic (as I have said before). The eyesight test is in the highway code. Stand in front of or behind your car. Walk away 20 paces. Can you read the reg number? Yes = OK to drive. No = when did that happen? I need to get an actual eye test... This would be the same as a road-side test given by the police.

Cummingsgate is boring now but if anyone missed last night's BBC 'Have I got news for you' program it was hilarious and recommended....ignore the politics and just giggle. Interesting at yesterday's Downing Street coranavirus update where Rishi Sunak was asked by Faisal Islam (BBC) if there is a 2nd wave of covid will the furlough scheme return after Oct closure? No real answer so a bit later Rob Bell (C5) asked the same question and to his credit the Chancellor said no commitment had been made to that so he did answer. I guess we are hoping that either there isn't a 2nd wave or businesses and public have adapted to safer practices thus avoiding a second lockdown which might be unaffordable. Today BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52858392 "Scientific advisers to the government have warned of the risk of lifting the lockdown in England, as the UK begins the final weekend before rules change. Professor John Edmunds said it was a "political decision" to ease measures; Sir Jeremy Farrar said the NHS test and trace system should be "fully working". Concern that with UK still having 2000 new covid cases per day (400/day Italy) it may be too soon to ease lockdown.....if we are following the best science. Tracing app. might be ready sometime in June (originally planned for UK roll-out mid-May) and Scotland currently has NO PLANS to use a tracing app.?! Blatman partial quote grabbing and not from originator.......journalistic tendencies? Regarding Highway Code Blatters the eyesight test distance is 20 metres so no discounted lesser distance for those with short legs and stride length. Lots of nuance in the lifting of lockdown for the press to get their teeth in to. As we all dribble back to work the lefty press will be looking for ANY upward movement in the R number, hospital admissions, people reporting symptoms or whatever to "prove" that the Tories did something "bad". I'm betting this will include local spikes which to me is an obvious outcome but the press will extrapolate to say "if this was repeated throughout the country..." to spread more fear. The righty press aren't going to have much to counter this with so they will need to get creative, maybe try to find a lefty politico who broke lockdown. Maybe they have it already and are sitting on it until it is needed. Local spikes, hospital admissions, people reporting new symptoms etc should be reported of course, but without the sensationalism and hyperbole which just gets in the way and is far more damaging.
