DonPeffers Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 With more breaches of the rules (or at least beneficial interpretations) by Government officials who tell the public to comply with the 'lockdown', can the 'lockdown work for much longer? 09 apr 2020 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/04/09/cabinet-minister-robert-jenrick-drove-40-miles-visit-parents/ "Cabinet minister Robert Jenrick drives 150 miles to second home during coronavirus lockdown" (London to Herefordshire, then 40 miles to parents' Shropshire home to deliver food and medicine). YET The Guardian 09 apr 2020 claim "Jenrick wrote In an article for the Mail on Sunday just over two weeks ago, Jenrick argued that rather than relatives travelling, local communities should help out. “While we create physical distance between ourselves, we must at the same time have closer social support for our neighbour,” he wrote". 07 apr 2020 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/07/new-zealand-health-minister-demoted-after-beach-visit-broke-lockdown-rules New Zealand health minister (David Clark) demoted after beach visit broke lockdown rules. 30 mar 2020 https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1262058/stephen-kinnock-coronavirus-uk-latest-father-neil-kinnock-birthday-covid-19-wales-police Labour MP Stephen Kinnock blasted by police for visiting father amid coronavirus lockdown. (Visit was for Neil K's 78th birthday). Scotland's now ex-Chief Medical Officer resigned after twice visiting second home during first 10 days of lockdown. Was warned by Police but not fined. Are the public going to follow the rules when leaders are seemingly flouting them? I now realise that going for a westie run will be fine, and comply with the rules, provided you carry a pack of paracetomol and throw it over your parents' garden hedge (social distancing maintained). Any thoughts on how this lockdown is 'working'? Quote
TAFKARM Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 So this morning I’ve just driven 100 miles each way to drop some food to my elderly mum, to relieve the burden off other family members. I left it on the door step and gave her a wave. There and back, no contact with anyone. What I noticed when I was in Birmingham, lots of people still out and about and people jogging together when obviously not in the same household. Quote

His argument was that he had been at Westminster undertaking work that could not be done at home and was "simply" returning home. That "sort of" makes his trip to his parents OK as both are within the rules. My take is that the press have to find stories to sell papers and fill websites to get advertising clicks. They won't ever give anyone, least of all politicians, the benefit of the doubt. Unlike the Scottish bint who was clearly on a jolly, should we not perhaps offer the benefit of the doubt here? To me this is a classic case of not letting the truth get in the way of a good story. Of course if he does it again then all bets are off... Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Calm down, Citizen. Everyone will be safe. Big Brother will be sending one of these out to every man, woman and child so you can carry on as normal. All is well. 2 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Unfortunately, as "Seven" style car owners, we may get the special versions, a certain Captain almost certainly will! 4 Quote

Sparkymart Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 I've just driven home from work (near Newquay) and the Main A30 was empty apart from lorries until I got near where I live then there was people driving around but not that many considering it a lovely sunny day in Cornwall but I do think there are still to many people out and about in the towns and whole families shopping in Supermarkets. Surely it would be better for everyone if only on member of the family went out Quote
SootySport Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Seems to be more people than ever walking their dogs around here. The dogs have never had it so good. Quote

BenD Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 I must admit I must be really boring because lockdown hasn't made any difference to my life. In fact it's actually made it easier lol. Because my wife and son are home I don't have to pick him up from nursery. I only go to work and back. And food shopping 1 Quote
AdamR Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Same. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Very few downsides for me, many many positives. 1 Quote

Mr Jenrick would of course be given the benefit of the doubt had he not lectured the public in The Mail on Sunday arguing that local communities should help out, rather than relatives travelling, then doing the exact opposite himself. From Mr Jenrick's own website https://robertjenrick.com/about-robert/ "Robert is married to Michal, and together they have three young daughters. They live in Southwell near Newark, and in London." Mr Jenrick, who has a £2,000-a-month taxpayer funded third home in his Newark constituency, said last night he considers the Herefordshire property to be the family home - but his official Conservative website says different. It fails to mention his country house (Herefordshire), and instead says the family 'live in Southwell near Newark, and in London'. Yesterday the UK coronavirus death toll reached a European record of 980 in a single day and we must keep the public focused on the lockdown message. Distractions by politicians going against their own advice won't help. Quote
Arm Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 The only thing I am now certain of is that the press will twist and manipulate a story to make a headline. Do not believe anything now the press say. I suspect when the truth is drilled into this is a completely different story. As i read the article and read between the lies I quickly came to the conclusion it was not as appears. 1 Quote

Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 His wife works in London and his children go to school in London - allegedly. The argument that the Herefordshire place is the 'family home' is a bit thin IMHO. Time for the pearl handled revolver methinks. Much as a I think this is a storm in a teacup, the precedent has been set north of the border. Quote
