Alan France Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 You could well be right. Here are my simple views. Is climate changing? Yes. Is “mankind” making it worse? Yes. Can the actions of the “entire world” be changed? Good luck with that. Can the world adjust to climate change? I think so. Is the climate change “groupthink - lobby” out of control? I think so. 1 Quote
corsechris Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I typed a great missive.....but in a nutshell, we are screwed. Brought it upon ourselves. Just maybe St Elon the Improbable will manage to make his dream of a human presence on Mars a reality and we can mess up another planet before we finally depart. 1 Quote

I keep telling my two boys who are at school choose Computer Science, Maths, Physics, biology closely followed by business studies and you might just survive 1 Quote

Perfect, a friends son studied chip design at Uni, then stayed on for his masters. Just started his first job with a starting salary of £65k plus on target bonus of 20%. Quote
Peter Robinson Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 I used to go to football with Mr Packham but had to move due how more odd he was getting, it got to the stage he would talk though the game. He is a very focused men I can tell you that. Quote

See this one. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/06/17/worlds-population-is-projected-to-nearly-stop-growing-by-the-end-of-the-century/ Mismatch of workers to pensioners, that’s another story. 19 hours ago, Alan France said: The same scenario was the subject of Dr Alice Roberts 'Horizon' documentary some 3 years ago. She also said that Planet Earth could sustain a population of 25 billion food wise but there would be problems with pollution and natural resources. As things stand now, every country is for itself, some international co-ordination will be required in the future if we are to survive. "Mismatch of workers to pensioners, that’s another story" Certainly is. Quote
DamperMan Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 The more of us there are the closer we stand together, the more we move and there more viruses we pass on. The more we pass on the greater the mutation chances and.... The population gets controlled. Or war.. Or Famine, Something will break. It’s not sustainable. Having kids I don’t like to think about this too much. Quote
corsechris Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 I made my decision about potential futures & offspring many years ago. Opted to make sure I never had kids. Quote

Focused is definitely an apt description. 1 hour ago, corsechris said: I made my decision about potential futures & offspring many years ago. Opted to make sure I never had kids. Apparently if every woman has 2.1 children the population will be stable. (Presumably the .1 is to account for premature deaths? ) I've got two, both in their 30s and not looking likely to give me any grandchildren.. Just got to work on that 0.1 now. Quote
corsechris Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Trouble is, we don't need a stable population, it needs to shrink significantly. There are lots of societal pressures (like certain religions) that demand procreation from their faithful, plus the other dirty trick our biology plays on us - when things get really bad, we are driven to procreate. Dr Alice Roberts says the population will decline steadily from the 25billion max although in Africa the population will rise. There are countries that the population has already started to decrease, Japan and Germany for starters. Shame I wont be around in 2050 to find out. 1 Quote

The over-populated will spill into (or take-over) the under-populated, with the sheer force of hungry numbers. 22 hours ago, marcusb said: I keep telling my two boys who are at school choose Computer Science, Maths, Physics, biology closely followed by business studies and you might just survive They should be fabricators - that'll come in handy in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max outcome. And they can fix the Westie in the meantime. 1 Quote
corsechris Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Just got round to watching this. He pretty much said everything I thought 35 years ago when I decided not to add to the problem. Made me sad for parents. Quote

But if you look out of the window when flying over Canada and large parts of the USA you go for miles, and miles, and miles with nobody. Australia and big parts of South America and Canada are quite desperate to attract people to invest, and grow the place. As wealth increases some of the population will begin to disperse. I have confidence that the next generation will succeed and grow. (And perhaps fix some of the problems we caused.) Quote
