Earlier this week, at a meeting at Motorsport UK, representation was made on behalf of WSCC regarding cars being caught out by the apparent contradiction in the Rules and Regulations of Motorsport UK (BLUE BOOK) regarding the fitting of catalytic converters. It is known that some cars do not require a CAT to be fitted for road use and to pass their MOT but the Rules require a CAT to be fitted to all cars including innon road going (Modifield Specialist Production Cars) classes.

Unfortunately our represention and suggestions were unsuccessful which is a great frustration and very disappointing. However, we will continue to make immediate  further representation which will include taking matters to the highest level if required

Meanwhile the SSOT are considering other avenues that might provide less regulated, simpler and more cost effective Sprinting for our Championshio for 2020.

I will keep you updated with progress.

No prizes for guessing where that might be........just lack hillclimbs i suspect

Bad luck Terry & team - it was worth you giving it another try with the MSA :down:  .... unfortunately it appears same outcome as when ruling originally put in place all those years ago and protested by previous SSOT's :down: .......... MSA ..... bless em :down: .............. Looks like it's a case of pre 99 chassis Westfields (and other kitcars) are going to increase in value for competing ;)

And that is why, despite being roadgoing my car has now a vehicle passport stating '99...

Anything specifically mentioned about bike engines cars? Still no CAT required for a bike engine on a registered plate. I can’t bolt a cat on without destroying the engine according to Andy Bates who went through this with RGB race series.

Dunno andy bates reasons behind it. You should be able to stick a cat in a bike engine as long as

You re-map the engine for the increase of temperature (basically flooding it with fuel at high loads) and sacrificing a considerable amount of peak power.

Having said that... NO. i wouldn't  do that to my car for the sake of few sprints... or maybe yes.

 

It is an absolute shame that this happened.

 

I had a funny conversation with the scrutineer that did my vehicle passport about the character who triggered all this massive issue... i can't quote here the conversation because would get both of us in trouble.

 

I wouldn't be worried of sprinting without CAT on any event not organised by longton. I think would be a good exercise for us guys, to do a bit of research and find out if he works with any other club where we may be invited, to flag it as dangerous.

 

For what i've been told by a few scrutinieers all of them are well advised to dont take actions for non safety critical concerns in amateur motorsport unless there is a competitor claim... (that includes the bloddy lithium batteries too) so... if we can find events that are idiot free, we should be fine.

Very disappointed to see this. The likelihood is I'll be relinquishing my licence this year and keeping my hard earned away from Motorsport UK and their Ill thought out rules and decision making. If I keep my car, my money will go to somewhere to which common sense applies.

Starts with  J and ends in Avelin!

 

Either the MSA simply have no concept of grass roots Motorsport or they simply have no interest in it? Either way, it's all a bit pathetic.

A cam chain snapping on the Aintree straight has focused my mind away from cats and onto more basic engine issues !!!

Good News re the CAT issue, I have fitted the following, a Redback Fault Correction Mini Catalytic Converter which is available fro Demon Tweeks for £76  I did the sprint at Curborough at the weekend and advised the scrutineer of my issue at Anglesey and what I had fitted.  He was happy with this and i was allowed  me to run with no issues.  I also asked him to 'positively endorse' my MSA vehicle passport for future reference to this effect.  He examined the mini cat at lunchtime (asking to see inside it which is a 10 sec job to remove it),  I also provided him with description printed from Demon Tweeks advert, along with the invoice.  I was lucky that my exhaust already had a take off for a lamba sensor that is blanked off, so all I have done is now fit the blanking plug to the end of the mini fault correction CAT  Worst case for anyone that doesn't have one fitted is that you would have to get one welded in So I now have a CAT fitted!

Redback's Catmini is designed for cars with Cat Replacement pipes. As the name suggests it is a miniature catalytic converter.  It mounts onto the cat replacement pipe lambda sensor hole and filters the exhaust gasses going to the lambda sensor. On cars with cat replacement pipes this will mean the lambda sensor is reading the exhaust gasses through catmini. This should remove the emissions warning light and prevent any ECU issues. Please note that this only filters gas going to the lambda sensor, not gas leaving the rear of the exhaust. While a vehicle fitted with one of these will not show an error light it will not pass an emissions test. Fits M18x1.5 thread size.
