Leather Seat Refurbishment Project

As some of you may know, I purchased a Z3 a few months ago.

It is fitted with M Sport leather seats, that were in need of some TLC.

So after some consultation with https://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/ I purchased a restoration kit from them.

Here is the drivers seat as removed from the car

Worn areas of bolsters, very poor and cracked base, some staining etc

The first process is to clean down and degrease all the leather, and then apply an alcohol solution to remove the leather sealer coat, and some of the colouring

Then I sanded all the leather with some 1500 grit sandpaper, and cleaned down again.

Next was to apply a leather binding solution using a sponge. Lots of very thin layers, each one dried off with a heat gun

That very cracked/rough seat base is now nice and smooth

I wanted to keep the black/blue colour scheme to maintain the original look, which meant it was time to mask up the black sections

Next was to apply the blue colouring. This is a colour matched BMW blue. Application is by spraying several thin coats

This then got 3 coats of glossy sealer

Next was to strip off all the masking.

After the sealer had cured, I then masked up the freshly done blue areas (forgot to photo this, but here are some photos of the passenger seat at this stage). Masked and black coats spray applied.

The black areas then got the same 3 coats of glossy sealer

The next stage is to apply a satin finish coat to the complete seat, again spray applied. A job for sometime in the week

Bit shiny at present, but the satin coat will finish them off lovely

Not quite, but a vast improvement!

Done the same thing on a set of Jaguar seats a long time ago and the same method as you but I never used the gloss finish, bit to shiny for me.

What's a sating coat Gary?

The gloss is not a finish, it's a sealer coat.

The finish coat is a Satin finish

I will put some pictures up once I have applied it
