AdamR Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Afternoon everyone, Hope you've been making use of the recent lighter nights and better weather to get your blatting season started I've been busy with the start of another season - the competition season - and been away the last few weekends helping out a couple of friends / customers with their season openers... I'm going to reveal details of the my competition at the end of this post, but beforehand please let me tell you what I've been up to recently and give a little context First up was Adam, who took part in the 750MC 5Club Racing MX-5 Cup at Oulton Park on 2nd April. We'd done a bit of work together at the circuit beforehand (some setup work, a little bit of driver coaching) and he'd also left the car with me for a few weeks for a full strip down and tune up. All the suspension and running gear came off the car to make sure it was in tip top condition and tweaked to perfection. He had been running around the fringes of the top 10 for most of the previous season, and I'd always had a hunch that he'd been a quick driver in a shed of a car... well I was right He won't take offence at all to me saying his DIY alignment was terrible and the car was in dire need of a good service! In short, I managed to find 7.5% power at the wheels without even removing the cam cover (using the same dyno, which showed estimated flywheel power at exactly the same on the before and after runs) and the track first session after driving his 'new' car left him grinning like a loony because the handling was now 'perfect'. That's all well and good, but how did he get on in the races? Well... Starting 6th out of 32 after a wet quali was a very good start, and he managed to press 5th into making a mistake to take a very respectable 5th in the first race. The second race was dry and we knew his pace was good... I was jumping around like a loony for most of the race He'd taken his first win in arguably one of the most competitive club series in the country and, having overtaken the previous leader, managed to pull a 3 second gap the next lap! The hard work from both of us had been truly worth it, I'll never forget that day Next up was Maurici taking part in the Longton & District MC sprint at Three Sisters yesterday. He'd come over here to live and work at the end of last year, and bought my car off me (sob ) to replace the MK he'd had in Spain. The car had already been well-developed and, following a few tweaks to Maurici's preference, it was time for a few track days. He had chance to do a day at Oulton Island Circuit late last year, then I went with him for another day last month - finding 3-4 seconds a lap after only two short sessions of instruction and a few simple setup tweaks (both times taken from videos on a fully dry track). It was then time to see how the driver & car combination stood up in competition... I'm pleased to say the answer is 'pretty well'! He took 2nd in class (just 0.5s behind a very dubiously-road-going Caterham with no passenger seat or rear view mirrors!), 21st overall out of 75 entries (including 8 Ferraris, 13 single seaters, and 11 non-roadgoing spaceframe cars) and fastest novice (by almost 3.5 seconds!) - very impressive stuff So - congratulations to both of you guys and a huge thanks to you for trusting me with your cars What does this have to do with a competition to win a free session of corner weighting? Well - both of the vehicles above have been set up on my scales for optimal performance, so I know the exact weight of them in competition trim... The question you need to answer - to the nearest 0.5kg - is: What is the combined weight of both of the cars above, including their drivers, race kit and required fuel level at the end of their respective events? A few clues to help... The Westfield weighs between 580-600kg, the MX-5 weighs 879kg (both without fuel), and you can see both of the drivers in the photos above (be nice...!!). The winner will be announced on Monday 25th April. In the event of a tie, the earliest answer will be the winner (so if two people are 0.5kg out, the person who posts first will win - hope that makes sense). Good luck and thanks for reading!Adam Quote
