Lyonspride Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 She does actually like Defenders, but not exactly a nice place to be doing an 80 mile a day commute.... What about something like a Ford Kuga? There's a very old saying...... "Never drive a Defender further than your prepared to walk" 1 Quote

Andrew O Byrne White - Ireland AO Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I may be a little biased as I work or JLR but don't believe all the stuff you hear about reliability of any brand. Most of the reputations of cars are based on how they performed 20 years ago and don't even remotely account for what the company does now. I won't go into any more detail than that as I'll only sound spiteful! In terms of off-road ability though, I have a friend back in Ireland who's brother runs a tow service up in the mountains (drives a Landie I might add!). from what I was told, the most rescued car he's had to deal with is the BMW X5. Personally I drive a Subaru Legacy myself. 2 litre diesel, does 45mpg, lovely to drive and grips excellently. Couldn't fault it throughout the winter except for the fact that it is the noisiest rattliest engine I've ever experienced until it warms up! Quote
SootySport Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I don't think there many 4wd Kugas about, most are 2wd. but seem a popular and reliable motor. I have always noticed the first cars to go off the road in the snow and ice are 4wd cars, too much reliance on it's 4wd capability I guess. Quote

TAFKARM Posted July 22, 2015 Author Posted July 22, 2015 I can imagine the conversation now: "Darling, I'd like a Range Rover like the Jones next door" "Here you go honey, I've bought you a Subaru Legacy"*slams fingers in Subaru door* 1 Quote
benedwards64 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Or get the Range Rover and make it clear she's responsible for any repair/maintenance bills? 1 Quote
SootySport Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Perhaps it would be better to let her choose and go and buy it. At least it won't be your fault--------------or maybe it still will be your fault as usual. Quote
MarkFRST Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Depends how deep your pockets are and what you like or if you want to just get around in the winter. A 4x4 car with winter tyres will be loads better in the snow than a range rover on standard tyres. So you'll have to buy two sets of really expensive tyres for the RR . i'd much rather have a good modern car with winter tyres than a rubbish noisey old range rover(newer good ones are going to be dear?) dhutch Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Unless you want to make the statement of 'Im a rich ass b*** who doesn't give a crap about the planet' I really can't see why anyone would drive a RangeRover these days, fractionally more logical if your also towing large (2ton+) trailers but again I am really clutching at straws. The main reasons people get stuck in the snow these days is because they have forgotten the basic rules of snow driving or are on silly width low profile tyres. A RangeRover suffers the same issues.
