New Key: impossible to find correct blank

The Factory only provided 1 key when I bought their S2000 demonstrator last week.  I didn't really ask why thinking I'd get another cut.

2 Cobbler/key cutters and one "almost the right size blank bought on-line" later and I'm struggling.

I think that the ignition lock is a Rover Maestro unit, and the key certainly has the British Leyland logo on the plastic handle bit.

I have e-mailed the factory with my slowly diminishing "snag" list this morning but they haven't yet responded.

Does this look like a Montego barrel or are they all very similar?

Has anyone managed to source blank keys for these barrels?

If all else fails, I'm assuming I can swap the barrel for something compatible yet with "standard" sized key blanks.

My local key cutters found one for me - no problem.  You perhaps need an independent rather than the likes of Timpson.

I would speak to the factory , they shouldn't be selling the car with only 1 key....

If Westfield can't supply another key then a local locksmith that supplies car keys can.    My locksmith supplied a spare BL key for me.

When my 2 keys started to break thru the plastic fobs (after 7 months from new) 3 locksmiths could not cut me new keys as no templates. One was a highly rated independent. Car was seen as well as keys.

My ignition keys have no letters nor numbers on them. Wscc member said looks like Rover or old BL design and in my case factory said I had Rover.

Factory said I would need to send a key to them to get a new one cut

Instead I just JBWelded the fobs.

You however need a second key and from my experience the factory is the only chance.

Can SootySport advise which locksmith he used re. the spare BL key?

Good luck.

North West Key Services on 0151 944 1187 should have a blank if you call them and send a photo

Then take it to your local key cutter

Simples :)

They are the UKs biggest surplier of blank keys to the trade and public :)

If you get really stuck send me the barrel and key when the cars off the road over winter

Thanks Guys, the firm I went to this morning in Crewe are well respected locksmiths.  They didn't have a blank and struggled to suggest where I go next.

Still haven't heard from the factory yet (its only been a day or two) so I'm quite hopeful.

The main problem seems to be the width across the flat face of the key is wider than the BL blanks I can source. Even by eye I can see a very very small gnat's chuff of a difference.

Thanks Andy, I think our posts crossed.

The number you gave me is actually the warehouse (trade only) but 1051 933 2747 gets you to their public counter.  Unfortunately I think they've had an early dart this afternoon so will try them again tomorrow.

Thanks.

Ime sure new barrels come with 2 keys so as a last resort you could just replace that

Just had an e-mail from the factory and it seems they're going to sort another key for me.

Fair do's

Will keep the forum posted.

What a coincidence.

I collected the S/C S2000 car from Westfield a couple of weeks ago and my key broke the same day. Have tried several places to get a replacement but as yet have failed.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and hope you get sorted.

Have to say, while the ignition key hasn't been used in anger on mine, the lock mechanism is very tight. It's way stiffer than my last car, or others that I've driven.

Without the ubiquitous sniggering and usual interjection from the Chairman, mines extremely stiff too.  I'll wait and see if the "new" key fares any better once sorted from the factory.
