New Westfield SEW

Hi All

 

I have just bought my first Westfield SEW - needed a widebody as I’m 6"5 and 15 stone !!

 

Loving it so far and very lucky with the weather this weekend, so managed to get a few miles under my belt.

 

I bought the car after a brief search from a really nice guy in Waltham Abbey, Darren (member on here too) who just wasn’t getting the use, so decided to sell.  The cars done 2.5k miles and runs on a 1600 Burton tuned CVH engine from an Escort RS, which seems strong. I’m thinking of doing a track day in Abingdon (30 miles from me) very soon and was wondering what to prepare for the day, any tips?

 

I also have a rather perished PiperCross filter (original shown in pics) any reasons why this may have broken down? (previous owner has had it happened twice now) and where should I get a replacement?

 

Final question – Will my rear drum brakes be okay on the track day?

 

In fact I have loads more questions, but will keep them for another day.

Ah, the yellow one with race chassis! Excellent choice... and if you don't mind me asking, but if you're in Bucks, could I one day perhaps have a look at it as well? I'm quite keen on finding out if those seats are suitable for my posture as well (and you being as tall as me it sounds encouraging!)...

The only logical explanations IMO (which will, of course, be wrong) are:

 

Accident damage from chemical spill or incorrect cleaning

Petrol blowback through carb

Petrol leak

UV discolouration (unlikely!)

The filters not been kept in strong sunlight or under a cover in wind (outside or towed on trailer)? Just a thought !!!!! Odd indeed

Quinten - sure no problem at all.

 

Scott - Yes possibly, when I removed the filter there was some petrol traces behind there in the carb trumpets

 

The car has been stored in a grage so unlikely to be UV but I wonder if it has been caught in the garage - chemical/burnt etc.

Petrol can bleach dark colours red, even human hair.  It does look like its flowed through the front of the forward carb and moved backwards while the car was at speed (to my eye).

Yeah I think you could be right there - Im not mechanically mided, but hoping to become more so, how can I stop the petrol coming through the carb in thr first place?

My previous car had bonnet exit ITG filter since it was first built, always keeps outside under a cover too. Never had anything like that.  I think the worst I've had is one or two spots on the leading edge where a little bit of the outer foam has got damaged - I always put that down to being in the airflow, and getting caught by the odd bit of debris.

 

But that almost looks like something chemical has attacked it, possibly then blasted away by airflow.

The logical step would be to remove the filter, idle the car up to warm and rev the engine to see if the leak becomes visible to spot where the problem is.  Bear in mind it may only be a tiny leak, as the foam filter will retain a lot of petrol which could take quite a while to evaporate.  Good luck!
