Shelsley Walsh - by Paul Morcom

In the end the WSCC Speed Series was represented by 7 entries at Shelsley Walsh, four Westfields in the WSCC dedicated class, Mike West hiding in the Road Going Specialist Production class (which was merged with various other classes throughout the weekend), Mark Schlanker in 1000cc to 1600cc racing cars and myself in a (non-WSCC scoring) National A Formula Ford class. Stu Hill and David Birch were there spectating and providing support in the paddock. I would guess David consumed multiple ice c

Tel's Tales Issue 011 Shelsley Walsh

Shelsley Walsh 4/5th May 2013 Eight WSCC Speed Series competitors headed to Shelsley Walsh to sample the 2-day format at this historic venue; all in roadgoing classes. Most lived fairly locally to the venue; David Reed being the exception by travelling in from Silverstone. The weather forecast was good and all looked forward to some blistering times! It was good to see old and new faces, this event being Craig Spooner’s first ever competitive hill climb. None of us had experienced the 2-day fo

Tel's Tales Issue 033- 3 Sisters June 2014

Tel's Tales 033– 3 Sisters 29th June Sprint 2014 After a night that included more rain following yesterday's wet Aintree event we woke to a dry day but a track that was slippy due to a 4 hour kart race the night before. This time we had 11 Westfield guys out plus Nick Algar in his Force (he was also at Aintree). It was good to see Mark Anson back in the pack after a couple of years out whilst he rebuilt his car but he was concerned about his lack of seat time and adapting to the alterations on

Tel's Tales Three Sisters 4th Aug 2019

Tel’s Tales 3 Sisters 4th Aug 2019   This weekend saw 4 Westfields competing at Hethel and 4 at 3 Sisters where I was. John Hoyle was in class F whilst myself, Steve and Matt were in class G. In some ways this was a strange  event for Longton and District Motor Club as there were only 43 drivers taking part. The day ran well and the predicted heavy rain started at 1500hrs but by then we had completed 1 Practice and 8 Timed runs so it was great value for money and the competition was ke

Tel's Tales Issue 037-Hethel Aug 2014

Tel's Tales 037– Hethel 3rd August 2014 So after loan of my trolley jack Paul Aspden's tyre was changed at 0615hrs and Gary Bunn, Derek Hodder, Dave Cleaver, Paul Aspden were just about recovered from the lovely meal we had last night at the pub. Five minutes drive and we all arrived at the Hethel (Lotus cars) test track for todays event run by our friends at Borough 19 MC. Today's event presented a new challenge due to the new layout covering a 1.25 lap run so after signing on it was time to j

Tel's Tales Issue 015 Three Sisters 2013

Tel's Tales 015: 3 Sisters 30th June 2013 Just a short hop down the road to 3 sisters and most of us and the paddock banter started on Saturday night. First problem was that the bay allocation had put slick shod Westfield on a pebbled/gravel area so we moved to alternative parts of the paddock to keep our tyres clean. That also proved a bit tricky as on Sunday there was gravel on the route to and from the pit lane start as well as water puddles. As a repayment for using all my whole roll of duc

Tel's Tales Blyton July 2018

Tel’s Tales Blyton July  weekend 2018   After 3 weeks way down in the south of France with our motorhome I arrived back home with just enough time to get everything ready for an afternoon arrival on Friday to get set up and see the back end of the trackday. I was hoping for a great weekend of sprinting. The Friday was well supported as was the GF pub meal in the evening. Dave Cleaver and Simon Waterfall were getting in some practice for their double drive and it was good to see To

Tel's Tales Issue 017 Llandow 2013

Tel's Tales 017: Llandow 27th July 2013 Having missed 2 events at Harewood I decided that I would travel down to south Wales and try to score a few points at Llandow. For those who dont know south Wales is not my most popular arae as this year at Pembrey my engine had a problem in 2nd practice so I did not figure in the points and in 2008 I had a big crash at high speed, smashed the Duratec and broke 2 ribs in the process, when a single seater dumped oil on the wet track. I set off on Friday a

Tel's Tales Anglesey 5th and 6th May 2018

Tel’s Tales Anglesey May weekend  2018 The second visit to Anglesey this year was arranged by MGCC (NW) and was 2 laps of the National circuit on Saturday and 1 lap of International on Sunday with 9 Westfield drivers on Sat and 8 on Sunday. Friday afternoon saw the Westfield mob arriving in bright sunshine with wall to wall blue skies such that I even had my shorts on and my legs frightened most of the paddock. Del and Garry were preparing their car in the garage and I watched Garry cl

Tel's Tales Issue 059 -Rockingham 2016

TEL's TALE's 058/2016 Rockingham March 2016 So here we go for the 2016 speed series which has a good number of entries despite the enforced MSA changes to roll over bars, cages, tyres etc. Class F seems to be well supported and this years sees a few more in single seaters or having sold their Westfields. Despite all the doom merchants suggesting it would be cold, wet and snowy it was actually dry, reasonably warm and we had sunshine. Nine speed series contenders were there. Only the tra

Tel's Tales Issue 032- Aintree June 2014

Tel's Tales 032– Aintree 28th June Sprint 2014 My car was ready having had a complete strip down and new main bearings fitted (and big ends as a precaution) after the loss of oil pressure at Pembrey and I also had a new 2nd gear fitted as the dogs were worn and it kept jumping out of gear at the most inappropriate moments. The forecast was good for the weekend and when I left home at 0500hrs from sunny Yorkshire all was well until I got onto the M62 and went over the Pennines to that god forsak

Tel's Tales Curborough, Aintree and 3 Sisters, Aug 2018

Tel’s `Tales CURBOROUGH FIG 8 , AINTREE AND 3 SISTERS 2 LAPPER   So here is a roundup of the last 3 events I attended   Curborough Fig 8 There were 7 Westfields competing at the popular but very slow 2 lap event and we has=d 2 practice and 2 timed runs. It was good to see Howard Gaskin back out and he had installed another gearbox and hydraulic clutch release in a short space of time since it failed at his last event. In P1 I suddenly experienced an intermittent mi

Tel's Tales Ty Croes Oct 2018

Ty Croes 6th/7th Oct 2018 Well the was the long awaited finale to the 2018 season. Most of the year had seen John Loudon and myself as leaders in the overall championship and Simon Waterfall pushing for at least Novice championship honours in the ex Kev Bamber car. After celebrating our 50thwedding anniversary Margaret and I booked  a one week cruise to the Greek Islands and I would be back just in time for ANGLESEY. Whilst I was away John Loudon and Howard (I am sneaking up on you)  Gaskin

Tel's Tales 3 Sisters July 2018

Tel’s Tales Three Sisters 29th July 2018   Well with all the dry and very hot weather we have had during the last 7 weeks or so, what could possibly go wrong? Well 3 Sisters is on the wrong side of the Pennines in rainy Lancashire so does that give you a clue? We probably had the coldest and wettest day of “summer” so any chance of setting new records on the new tarmac were never going to happen.  It was initially a case of surviving the wet and cold during the practice runs which

Tel's Tales Rockingham 25 March 2018

Tel’s Tales Rockingham Sunday 25th March 2018 So the miserable cold wet winter “closed” season was over and it was a return visit to the fast circuit at Rockingham. Despite the wet weather we have had recently the forecast was ok and so the drivers were looking forward to being out on track again despite the tarmac temperature being cold. I had only changed my engine oil and put a new set of radial slicks on the car but with Steve’s car we ended up changing oil, refurbishing the starte

Tel's Tales Harewood Sept 2018

Tel’s tales – Harewood weekend 15thand 16thSept 2018 This weekend saw the speed series visiting god’;s own county of Yorkshire and sample the local weather which once again was windy and at times wet as well as a little chilly. It’s the only hillclimb Steve  and I do as its only 30 mins away and on  the doorstep. For those that have not driven it Harewood is the longest hillclimb in the country and notoriously difficult to get a good time as there are several places to get the corner wrong

Tel's Tales Issue 014 Aintree 2013

Tel's Tales 014: Aintree 29th June 2013 Well, Steve Everall returned from a short honeymoon in the Lakes (how did Margaret fall for that one?) after his wedding on 22nd June. I was best man so the speed series got a lot of coverage in my speech and amazing I did not spot anyone falling asleep. This was the second visit to Aintree but for me I was still awaiting a new trigger wheel for my best engine so the standard one was back in place. Free golf driving range golf balls had been liberally sca

Rockingham 26 March 2017

Tels’s Tales Rockingham 26th March 2017   Well what a way to start my season! Spent most of the winter putting spare engine in and doing several other mods so hoped for a good shakedown but my clutch failed to work after convoy sighting run. I was not too pleased to say the least but Steve offered me a double drive in his car so at least I would get out on track. The day was bright, warm and sunny so the other 12 competitors got ready to score good points in both Expert as well as Novi

Blyton weekend 11th/12th August 2018

Blyton Sat/Sun 11th/12thAug 2018 On Thursday I was in shorts and T shirt as I got my car ready for the weekend run by Longton and District Motor Club who had a very small entry but the event still went ahead. I had spent 2 weeks trying to track down an intermittent fault which was causing a misfire or fuel starvation. I spent hours remaking connections on the wiring loom, changing the fuel pump, all relays, plugs , coil sticks and all sensors as well as checking earths for ECU and Power Com

Tel's Tales Anglesey 29/30 April 2017

TEL's TALES 04/17 Ty Croes, Angelsey weekend 29th/30th April 2017     This event was run by MG car club (NW) with 2 laps of the National circuit on Saturday and 1 lap of the International on Sunday. The weather for all 9 Westfield drivers was very windy and very cold but despite the weather forecast it did not rain apart from a few early showers on Saturday morning during practice.. The big bonus was that it was a medium sized entry, well run and we got loads of runs particul

Tel's Tales Knockhill 2019

Knockhill Sprint Sept 2019-09-09 Well I am back from a most amazing weekend in sunny Scotland having attended the 2 day sprint. It seemed like everything that could happen did happen and it turned out to be a great weekend of motorsport with 8 Westfields plus the class J cars taking part in the sprints alongside the usual Super Lap Scotland competition. It was originally Mark Anson’s idea to go to Knockhill (it has been many years since we were last there) and my discussions with Steve Arkl

Tel's Tales Anglesy Oct 2019

Tel’s Tales Ty Croes, Anglesey 5th/6th Oct 2019 As has become usual, drivers headed to the Island of Anglesey for the final weekend of the year run by our friends at Longton and District Motor Club. Many of us like to arrive early on the Friday afternoon to beat the traffic and get settled in place with electric hook ups in the paddock. As we had to wait to get into the paddock due to a “private testing event” we were queued and parked up on a part of the old circuit close to Radar bend com

Tel's Tales Harewood 2019

Harewood 6th& 7thJuly 2019   Once a year the speed series circus visits God’s own county to tackle the longest hillclimb in the country at Harewood. I have to report that the weather was fantastic on both days with both sun and warm weather despite a few threatening clouds so our decision to move the event to July rather than September seemed to pay off. The only downside is that due to its popularity there is always a big entry and we only achieved 2 practice and 2 timed runs on b

Tel's Tales: 3 Sisters 1st Sept 2019

3 Sisters Sunday 12st Sept 2019 Following the last few really hot weeks the weather was taking a change as we approached the first day of Autumn (1/9/19). As a results the forecast was poor with the chance of rain throughout the day  but what do you expect in Lancashire? As the 8  Westfield competitors arrived at the circuit they were greeted by a nice rainbow. Quite soon it was raining as we prepared our cars for the 1000hrs start with a full entry. As predicted the track was very wet but

Tel's Tales Curborough 24th Aug 2019

Curborough 24thAug 2019   Whilst the drivers who liked hillclimbs travelled to Loton Park a few of us entered the sprint at Curborough to tackle the favoured Figure of 8. The is by far the best layout but it does take a lot of time to get through the cars and with a full entry there was a lot of hanging around between runs in the blazing heat of the sun….and boy was it HOT. In the end we finished at 1810hrs, even with a 0900hrs start, and then I faced a long 2 hour journey home. There
