2013 Speed Series Reports - Part 1

Tel's Tales – Speed Series 2013 - Part 1 by Terry Everall - Speed Series Correspondent Introduction Well, in a rash possibly inebriated moment I agreed to appoint myself as official Speed Series Correspondent for 2013. So unless someone else volunteers you are stuck with me but I hope to publish both factual reports as well as coordinate articles , views and questions from all members so that we communicate the interest in our Speed Series, which many other clubs envy and congratulate us on a

Tel's Tales Issue 009 Goodwood

Tel's tales Issue 009 - 27th April 2013 Goodwood :Speed Series This report was was compiled by Simon Broadbridge A small (but some say perfectly formed) Westfield contingent of Pete Goulding (class F), John Loudon (class C) and Simon Broadbridge (class A) converged in the Goodwood paddock on a chilly but bright Saturday morning. The limited entry was the result of a number of factors, including the clash with events at Wiscombe and Aintree, serious concerns over track monitoring of noise le

Tel's Tales: 3 Sisters 1st Sept 2019

3 Sisters Sunday 12st Sept 2019 Following the last few really hot weeks the weather was taking a change as we approached the first day of Autumn (1/9/19). As a results the forecast was poor with the chance of rain throughout the day  but what do you expect in Lancashire? As the 8  Westfield competitors arrived at the circuit they were greeted by a nice rainbow. Quite soon it was raining as we prepared our cars for the 1000hrs start with a full entry. As predicted the track was very wet but

Tel's Tales Issue 067 25th June 2016

TEL's TALE's 067/16 Aintree 25/06/16 Introduction Well Aintree is not one of my favourite tracks since I went bike engined a few years a go. With only 69 ft lbs of torque and a long, long straight its hard to get good terminal speed especially if there is a headwind......and guess what we had one so target times were going to to be very very difficult. My brother Steve quite likes it and we decide to give it a go as he needs the event for the championship following his engine blow up. A

Tel's Tales Harewood and Blyton Sept 2017

Tel’s Tales Harewood weekend and Blyton  Sept  2017 Saturday This year the popular Harewood weekend was a little later than normal but still attracted 15 speed series competitors. God’s own country provide a freezing cold start to Saturday morning. Richard Kerr was out for the first time this year having rebuilt the gearbox etc and was supported by Tim Nunn who was spectating. P1 saw Charlotte Phelps immediately had a problem with the electrics on the Busa car, Steve Everall had t

Tel's Tales Issue 048 -Harewood May 2015

Tel's Tales 047– 2015 Season- Harewood Sat & Sun May 9th and 10th 2015 This is the local event for me (25 mins drive) and set in God's own county so I was looking forward to the annual visit. I was very happy as Steve and I had to rebuilt Steve's and my own car in 4 days since the contacts we made with the Armco at Hethel. I have to thank Dennis Silman who runs Siltech racing for providing complete new Wishbones and fitting at record speed and its great quality. Alas the heavens had opened

Tel's Tales Issue 040 Thoresby Park Weekend 2014

Tel's Tales 040– Thoresby Park 13th & 14th Sept 2014 Well here was the weekend I was not sure whether to compete at. Despite its great scenery it is a tricky, very tight track and atrocious in the wet due to the overhanging trees. Actually it stayed dry but overcast all weekend but even so the damage to cars, particularly bodywork has always been a bit more than other venues and the water/sand filled barrels and large hay bales don't take any prisoners, even for minor mistakes. In fact car

Tel's tales Issue 008 - 27th April 2013 Aintree report :Speed Series & other gossip Terry Everall Speed Series Correspondent Aintree 27th April 2013 Terry Everall Speed Series Commentator (Class G competitor & SSOT Well for me this was event number 2 and had a lot of the Yorkshire guys out playing including brother Steve , John Hoyle and Kevin & Paul Jones (first double drive this year). Early start from York at 0530hrs and joined Steve on M62 with our trailers heading east f

3 Sisters 21 May 2017

TEL's TALES 06/17   3 Sisters 21st May 2017       As most of you know the future management/liquidity of the Three Sisters venue (or parts of it) are under review and it is to the credit of Longton DMC that they managed to keep this event on. The entry was not massive so everyone was looking forward to good weather and lots of runs in the normal LDMC tradition. The weather did stay dry all day which was a bonus as some weather forecasts had predicted a bit of the wet stuff wh

Tel's Tales Curborough Fig 8 on 8th Oct 2017

Tel’s Tales Curborough Figure of  8 Oct 2017 This event was run by MAC and the figure of 8 has become a popular layout compared to the single or double lap options. There were 12 speed series competitors (including 3 in class J2) present and a few Westfield supporters visited to watch the runs. At the briefing we were told that the event was oversubscribed and a few of us wondered why that had happened! The result was that special arrangements had been put on place to  make sure we got

Tel's Tales Issue 039 Ty Croes September 2014

Tel's Tales 039– Ty Croes, Anglesey 6th and 7th Sept 2014 The finals for this 2 day event saw 22 Westfield entrants if I include Marshall Rowland and Steve Davies in The Lotus Elise so it was a good turnout and promised some great competition in most classes. Late Friday afternoon arrival for some of us gave us time to see the end of the bike trackday before walking the course ourselves and checking the rumble strip condition and heights were the same as last year. The food in the cafe was good

Tel's Tales Issue 011 Shelsley Walsh

Shelsley Walsh 4/5th May 2013 Eight WSCC Speed Series competitors headed to Shelsley Walsh to sample the 2-day format at this historic venue; all in roadgoing classes. Most lived fairly locally to the venue; David Reed being the exception by travelling in from Silverstone. The weather forecast was good and all looked forward to some blistering times! It was good to see old and new faces, this event being Craig Spooner’s first ever competitive hill climb. None of us had experienced the 2-day fo

Tel's Tales Issue 060/16 Croft Easter 2016

TEL's TALE's 060/16 Croft 28th March 2016 Easter Monday is always Croft sprint so most of us got loaded up on Sunday. I managed it just before we had thunder and lightening and a massive hailstorm so things did not look good for the morning. I live in York and the rain belted it down all night and caused some local roads to flood so my 0600hrs start for the drive up to Croft was dark and a bit hairy in places. Arrived to find an almost deserted and empty paddock (which never looked full

Tel's Tales Issue 061/16 3 Sisters 10th April 2016

TEL's TALE's 060/16 3 Sisters 10th April 2016 The weather alll week was wet and cold so it was promising to have a good forecast for the Sunday event. Crossing the M62 int deepest Lancashire saw lots of fog, snow on the hills and temperatures down to -2C. I pulled into the paddock at 0725hrs and got the car out of the trailer in pristine condition after its clean up following Croft. b******* me if Andy Hargreaves came charging onto the paddock to park alongside me and go through a deep

Tel's Tales Curborough 24th Aug 2019

Curborough 24thAug 2019   Whilst the drivers who liked hillclimbs travelled to Loton Park a few of us entered the sprint at Curborough to tackle the favoured Figure of 8. The is by far the best layout but it does take a lot of time to get through the cars and with a full entry there was a lot of hanging around between runs in the blazing heat of the sun….and boy was it HOT. In the end we finished at 1810hrs, even with a 0900hrs start, and then I faced a long 2 hour journey home. There

Tel's Tales Issue 033- 3 Sisters June 2014

Tel's Tales 033– 3 Sisters 29th June Sprint 2014 After a night that included more rain following yesterday's wet Aintree event we woke to a dry day but a track that was slippy due to a 4 hour kart race the night before. This time we had 11 Westfield guys out plus Nick Algar in his Force (he was also at Aintree). It was good to see Mark Anson back in the pack after a couple of years out whilst he rebuilt his car but he was concerned about his lack of seat time and adapting to the alterations on

Tel's Tales Issue 018 MIRA 2013

Tel's Tales 018: MIRA 3rd August 2013 Due to holidays I had missed the earlier MIRA event so I was eager to get out there again. As we know itsa fast track and has lots of horrible cones to test how well the car wings are attached to the tub. There was a three quarter hour delay to get in and there was a reasonable Westfield turnout with 14 cars, except for Del and Gary who had fallen out with the track and course previously. Scrutineering proved difficult for Kev Jones as there was side to sid

Tel's Tales Issue 047 -Hethel May 2015

Tel's Tales 047– 2015 Season- Hethel Sunday 3rd May 2015 For me and Steve travelling south for 4 hrs was fairly easy despite the slow roads around Kings Lynn and East Anglia. We had a good meal and a few pints talking with Duncan Cowper ( Dax Rush Turbo fame) and his mate before getting to sleep I the trailer. Woke about 0400hrs with the rain lashing it down bang on forecast. As it turned out WET WET WET (not the pop group that formed in 1982) turned out to be the theme for the event. The 5 Wes

Tel's Tales Issue 015 Three Sisters 2013

Tel's Tales 015: 3 Sisters 30th June 2013 Just a short hop down the road to 3 sisters and most of us and the paddock banter started on Saturday night. First problem was that the bay allocation had put slick shod Westfield on a pebbled/gravel area so we moved to alternative parts of the paddock to keep our tyres clean. That also proved a bit tricky as on Sunday there was gravel on the route to and from the pit lane start as well as water puddles. As a repayment for using all my whole roll of duc

Tel's Tales Issue 037-Hethel Aug 2014

Tel's Tales 037– Hethel 3rd August 2014 So after loan of my trolley jack Paul Aspden's tyre was changed at 0615hrs and Gary Bunn, Derek Hodder, Dave Cleaver, Paul Aspden were just about recovered from the lovely meal we had last night at the pub. Five minutes drive and we all arrived at the Hethel (Lotus cars) test track for todays event run by our friends at Borough 19 MC. Today's event presented a new challenge due to the new layout covering a 1.25 lap run so after signing on it was time to j

Tel's Tales Issue 017 Llandow 2013

Tel's Tales 017: Llandow 27th July 2013 Having missed 2 events at Harewood I decided that I would travel down to south Wales and try to score a few points at Llandow. For those who dont know south Wales is not my most popular arae as this year at Pembrey my engine had a problem in 2nd practice so I did not figure in the points and in 2008 I had a big crash at high speed, smashed the Duratec and broke 2 ribs in the process, when a single seater dumped oil on the wet track. I set off on Friday a

Tel's Tales Issue 059 -Rockingham 2016

TEL's TALE's 058/2016 Rockingham March 2016 So here we go for the 2016 speed series which has a good number of entries despite the enforced MSA changes to roll over bars, cages, tyres etc. Class F seems to be well supported and this years sees a few more in single seaters or having sold their Westfields. Despite all the doom merchants suggesting it would be cold, wet and snowy it was actually dry, reasonably warm and we had sunshine. Nine speed series contenders were there. Only the tra

Tel's Tales Issue 032- Aintree June 2014

Tel's Tales 032– Aintree 28th June Sprint 2014 My car was ready having had a complete strip down and new main bearings fitted (and big ends as a precaution) after the loss of oil pressure at Pembrey and I also had a new 2nd gear fitted as the dogs were worn and it kept jumping out of gear at the most inappropriate moments. The forecast was good for the weekend and when I left home at 0500hrs from sunny Yorkshire all was well until I got onto the M62 and went over the Pennines to that god forsak

Rockingham 26 March 2017

Tels’s Tales Rockingham 26th March 2017   Well what a way to start my season! Spent most of the winter putting spare engine in and doing several other mods so hoped for a good shakedown but my clutch failed to work after convoy sighting run. I was not too pleased to say the least but Steve offered me a double drive in his car so at least I would get out on track. The day was bright, warm and sunny so the other 12 competitors got ready to score good points in both Expert as well as Novi
