BobMet Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Non-slip rubber matting on the boot lid, Ortlieb waterproof bags on top, and also between the seats and under the passenger's legs. To hold the bags on the boot lid I use adjustable Rok straps between the spare wheel carrier and anchor points screwed into the rear bulkhead. Quote
housebeautician Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 I was thinking of fitting a top box to the cage when it's fitted That was my idea Quote
alexander72 Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Looks good BobMet..... very efficient - has anyone ever had a trailer on a westy, or god forbid, a caravan??? Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Looks good BobMet..... very efficient - has anyone ever had a trailer on a westy, or god forbid, a caravan???The problem there is that Westfield's aren't plated for towing and any towbar would need to be EC Type Approved. I'd also be fairly concerned about the total lack of chassis structure rearward of the bulkhead for attaching any form of towbar to.Edit to add, I know of a Robin Hood that regularly tows a trailer, but From memory that was SVA'd with the towing attachment. Norman Verona Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I know it'd not quite the same but wasn't there a Triumph Spitfire which towed a trailer made out of the rear of a Spitfire. Quote
greenandmean Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 About 20 years ago the then Yorkshire AO Les Bentley had a tow bar on his Westfield, used to tow a small trailer mostly to take his lawn mower to cut his mother in laws grass. Also used to bring stuff up to Harewood for the Yorkshire Experience. Quote
Blatman Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 BobMet's looks like the way to go and is pretty much how I pack my Westfield when going to Le Mans. Utilising space under passengers (and drivers) legs as well as the space behind and between the seats is key. If you have a spare wheel there's a void in there that can be used too. My car is devoid of a boot and spare wheel hardware but attaching with straps to the roll bar is fine. I use straps similar to these This is my car loaded for 2 blokes, 1 week in Le Mans. I'm carrying clothes, a 3 man tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 chairs, stove/gas, camping table, tools, med kit, warning trianlge, hi-vis etc etc. Quote
Blatman Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I was thinking of fitting a top box to the cage when it's fitted I did have a picture of a car with a cage that had a roof box attached. I can't find it at the moment, but there is this... My only concern here is that if you're two up there is a possibility that you could exceed the max axle weight for the vehicle. The roof rack itself could be pretty hefty, and with the temptation to fill it with as much gear as possible, you may run it close to max kerb weight. Plus I think you should inform the insurers. Whilst I'm sure the cage can support the weight, it hasn't been designed as a load bearing structure, but as an imnpact resisting structure. I'll be honest I don't think that is an important distinction but I'm not the one that would have to pay out if it all went tits up... Quote
alexander72 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 i just love that caterham with a roof rack....... mmmmmm roof tent anyone? Quote

Ninja Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Paul Ash rack plus a couple of Overboard bags was enough storage for 4 days camping for me+passenger at Le Mans I even took some beer with to make sure we were stocked up for when we got there: Quote

Norman Verona Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 The problem with those above is you lose the use of the interior mirror. I stacked all my stuff on the back panel with bungees and used the boot for all the clothes. Everything wrapped in black sacks. Clear rear vision. Quote
