Doug Dastardly Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Do I win a prize.......I can get 0.33 on a good day and 0.25 normally....yes the decimal is in the right place. Can't watch videos and stuff without lots of buffering Flashy adverts really bog it down You guys have nothing to complain about I'm thinking about either satellite broadband or a mobile dongle when my contract is up. Anybody with any experience? Quote
Blatman Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Satellite broadband I have recent experience of having installed it at a property recently. This was pretty much a money no object installation so I will reveal how much it costs but obviously it may not be the most cost effective solution ever! No matter how much money you throw at it, you will not get the bandwidth unless it's a perfect day. Weather affects it badly. The system I installed is supposed to give 16Mb on average. I've seen it as high as 20, and I've seen is down at just a couple of meg during the snow showers. This is a service costing in excess of £1,500 per month. When the cutomer asked how much speed I could guarantee with this, I told him I could not offer any guarantees. If you have a good mobile signal then a 3G/4G dongle may be a more viable option but it would be worth knowing which of the providers gives the best mobile signal coverage in your area. Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I had a flyer through the door offering it for £26 per month so there's obviously a wide range of services available. More research is obviously called for. As I'm paying £12 now I would consider paying the extra for 2 Meg but £1500........ Thanks, Doug Quote
Blatman Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Very true, 3G speeds seems to have dropped in the last year or so, lucky if you get 2meg. downloads these days. My theory is when a new gen. of broadband comes along the old system is left to slow down or die. All part of a plot to get you interested in new contracts on what is supposed to be the be all and end all New Generation---------until the next idea comes along of course. Fixed line broadband is no exception to my theory either. I tend to agree broadly with that. I have also heard talk of deals between providers that effectively have them agreeing not to chase customers where a competitor has a significant existing presence. I do not know how true this is but I do believe it is plausible. I also don't believe copper is dead. Wireless has obvious security implications before we get into weather, local environment, signal strength Vs signal quality and whether it is any good indoors (we all know places where it's tough to get a simple mobile phone call completed without doing the mobile phone dance) etc etc. Copper is ever improving and with 10Gb possible down CAT5e the trickle down effect should us using copper for a while yet. And there are other ISP's laying their own networks. It's not just all about BT, Sky and Virgin using equally old cable infratructure or unbundling existing copper. BUT, new ISP's have a tough market to crack. It won't be easy or quick. Quote

I'd be really interested in looking at what they propose. I had to install a 2 metre dish for the one I've done. It's mounted in the garden on something called a non penetrating roof mount. It's a hefty bit of kit. Then there's the issue of getting the cable from the LNB on the dish to the inside of the premises and attached to the router which they will provide... Quote
Arm Posted December 8, 2012 Author Posted December 8, 2012 Glad I started this. Signed up for BT Infinity, should be installed next week. Quote
Blatman Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Very jealous. Can't get it at my place. Doubly annoying as my next door neighbour can get it. Sadly we're on different cabinets Quote
SootySport Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Very jealous. Can't get it at my place. Doubly annoying as my next door neighbour can get it. Sadly we're on different cabinets How annoying. There are are a few like this and I know of some customers tha have ordered a new line so it comes from the adjacent cabinet or even exchange. One customer actually re-numbered his house from 14 to 12A as it was available to No 12 , just to have Infinity. As long as your house is within 50metres and line of site to the next pole where Infinity is available, it is possible. Or you could just wait until your exchange is enabled. Quote
Norman Verona Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I would NOT recommend satellite broadband When my son moved into his present house they didn't have ADSL in the area. He went with BT satellite. It was fine in good weather but was so slow, or no signal at all, in rain that we informed them in writing with the down and up load speeds plotted on a spread sheet. They ceased the service, left the dish (it's still there, I think) and demanded £900 payment. I wrote back inviting them to sue us so we could counter claim for our costs and damages. All went quiet until a collection agency started collecting a few years later. I telephoned them, explained the situation and they went quiet. However we got a demand every year for the next 2 or 3 years. It's been about 8 years since we last heard from them so I assume it's now finished. ADSL arrived a few months after the dish ceased and they now have fibre. We're moving offices again, partly to get fibre. Quote

Exchange has been enabled for over a year. I believe my cabinet is actually at the exchange as is my neighbours. Haven't seen a telegraph pole for over a decade in London. The cables are all underground. And I could bounce a tennis ball off my neighbours front door from my balcony... And even if/when my cabinet us upgraded (according to FTTC check it's not even part of a programme yet), I live in a 5 / 6 year old block of flats, so I'll need to get the landlord on board as well. But I know where the block DP is and it's reference number. If there's nothng to do to the equipment in the block then great. If there is and the landlord doesn't get with it I may apply for a whole new line to myself. I'd appreciate any tips on how I might go about that to ensure I get attached to an Infinity enabled cabinet. Quote

Norman Verona Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 could you not get friendly with your neigbour Depends on how godd looking she is Quote
SootySport Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Blatman, Considering your in a block of flats and you say your neighbour has Infinity then you should be able to have it as well. Or are you saying it's a neighbouring block of flats? Quote
Blatman Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Neighbour is a house, part of a row of houses which are book-ended by blocks of flats, 4 flats per storey, 3 storeys per block, 5/6 years old. To further muddy the waters, the last two houses and block of flats at t'other end are also in a different borough! I'm in Ealing along with my neighbours and half a dozen houses, the rest are in Hillingdon... Quote
Blatman Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 move could you not get friendly with your neigbour and get them to get another line for you I do occasionally think about moving, but I like it here. IF I ever move, pretty much the second question will be about broadband availability, as I am sure it is for many people these days. My neighbours don't speak English so getting friendly has it's own difficulties... Quote
