Arm Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Guys Any recommendations for fibre optic broadband please ? Unlimited download, sensible price, reliable, easy swap over. Super fast not required. Currently on Talk Talk as an ex Pipex customer and fibre is showing as available in my area. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I'm using BT and so far it's been pretty painless. Fingers, toes and everything crossed, but twelve months now and no issues. To be fair though, I've had BT regular broadband in the past too, and other than speed not being the best in my area, didn't have any trouble with them then either. Got a few customers on the various Infinity packages and don't recall any mentioning problems. Quote
s2rrr Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Hi Ash, I too have BT infinity and its an improvement on the previous version with anything up to 5 or sometimes more wireless devices running all together it seems to work fine. You may get some mileage negotiating the price a bit as they often have discount periods, normally just after you've signed up, but I've been with BT for ever and apart from not being able to speak with a real person if it ever goes wrong its just a price issue. Luckily it hasn't gone wrong yet so its probably more expensive but pretty good. Bob Quote
Blatman Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 It's been showing as available in my area for a year but it actually isn't. BT's website shows exchanges that can support fibre optic, but until your local street cabinet has been upgraded you won't get it. Currently my next door neighbour has it, but I don't 'cos we're on different cabinets. That's *really* annoying... To check more accurately if the local cabinet is ready to go, enter your postcode here: http://fttc-check.alc.im/ Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I had the same problem Blatters, my "end of the cabinet" wasn't ported over for nearly fourteen months after the basic cabinet went in. Quote
Blatman Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Mines not even part of a potential uplift programme at the moment... I have also recently discovered an exchange in London SW1 that isn't 21CN yet, it's still all ADSL Max I've had 6Mb/sec out of it... Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I'm at a remote end of a tacked on set of cards, with ****** aluminium last links :bangshead: :bangshead: :bangshead: ADSL with BE - the fastest I could get, AND with BE tuning the line for me, got about 2.2Mb/sec. Could push it to 3.1 but lost all reliability. Even on fibre I only get 14Mb/sec on a great day. But to me that's a vast improvement. I just need a cunning plan to loose the aluminium. Quote
GreigM Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I'm with Eclipse, but to be honest I wouldn't recommend them - when you do have a problem their support is useless and slow, and they're very slow offering the 80/20 product which I would be able to get on BT. I think BT would be the best bet as at the end of the day they supply the wires and I think they have more "depth" to their support if you do have a real connection issue. My speed just now is reasonable, but it does swing up and down a bit: Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Git I can only dream of such speeds. Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 We have the BT offering - had to kick up a fuss with them to get it. Endless "pass the parcel" between Retail and OpenReach with one saying it wasn't available at our cabinet, the other saying it was (Retail's database lags behind OpenReach's). For anyone who is trying to choose based on infrastructure etc, Plusnet also have an offering now. Guess who they're owned by...? Oh yes, the one they don't offer speed comparisons against in their adverts. And perhaps already mentioned above. Also, worth bearing in mind that you need the router within a short distance of the master socket (and 13a socket). Chap who installed ours was kind enough to configure the socket I nominated as the new master, even if he did think the choice of socket a little odd. Quote
dombanks Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Im With virgin 60mb whenever I've done a speed test it seems pretty much on the nose. No problems on the downloads either but I don't really do alot anyway so I don't really know what their limit is Quote
Arm Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 Thanks gents. BT seem to come out ok from these comments. We have been looking at them and I wanted to be sure we were not making a mistake. Any other comments ? Ash Quote

Arm Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 Roofing ordered yesterday. Purlins went up this afternoon. 4 ton of hardcore outside waiting for mini digger. Rawbolts in holding stanchions secure.. Too far from the house to put power in unfortunately so just going to be a stable. Quote
SootySport Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Reasons why FTTC is not available yet, 1. Not avaiable in your exchange area at all. 2. Cabinet installed but may be waiting for a suitable 240v. connection. 3. Local council in dispute as to the cabinet location, sited in wrong place according to the plan. 4. Conservation area committee don't want more street furniture in their area. 5. Cabinet mainly serves an industrial park, OR and BT won't provide FTTC to business's, they are hoping for FTTP(premises) to be taken up by business users instead. 6. OR and BT just completely forgot about installing FTTC. 7. Distance to cabinet too far and not economic. Quote
